HP LaserJet 2100TN... quo vadis?

I appreciate many folk are having trouble with HP printers since upgrading. I was printing fine via a Linksys broadband router on the ethernet, with an assigned IP to the HP printer. Now I can't see it. I've trawled through the forums and tried various combinations and permutations. I suspect most networks will have a hub of some description; not sure if this is where the problem lies. I can't mess around with network settings (in terms of DHCP) as this is how I get online, also through the Linksys. I did read somewhere about uninstalling all old HP software/drivers, etc. but I can't find an uninstaller on my system. It seems that some users out there have cracked it, whilst others are still in the dark. No point in ranting about it, but these sorts of things shouldn't be allowed to happen. It's a great printer, so there's no point in ditching it. What I may have to do is Time Machine back to the previous OS until the dust settles...

Give the drivers on HP's site a shot. They are available at:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?pnameOID=149 18&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodSeriesId=25469&prodTypeId=18972&swEnvOID=219
Technically in most cases you should not need drivers, but the fact that HP's website says "os X 10.4 update" as the driver makes me think they might have a problem with 10.4's stock driver. So give that a shot and let me know if it helps. Good Luck!

  • HP Laserjet 2100TN - how to add IP printer in Snow Leopard

I am not a very technical person, so this was quite an ordeal for me.  I was very frustrated by the process and almost gave up.  I am glad that I did not
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and after many hours of reading blogs and instructions etc. I finally got my HP LaserJet 2100TN network printer to print in SnowLeopard.   I am running a 24" imac.
All of the blogs/support documents tell you that you have to enter the IP address of the printer to set up an IP printer.  To obtain the IP address for the printer, you are told to print a Configuration Page.  But I had no idea how to do that.  So I found a manual online for my printer, learned that if I pressed the Job Cancel and the Go button at the same time that I would print a configuration page.  And it did !!!!  It was listed under Printer Informations as HP JetSend Address: ip: 192.xx.x.xx. (I left out my IP address as yours will be different.)  I then used the Network application located under Utilities, went to PING, entered the IP address and I pinged the printer.  The ping was successful.  Then I used the instructions provided at the link below  to add the IP printer.  Here is the info for the add printer info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4507.
Here is the link for the LaserJet 2100 manual.

    Good luck.

Many, many thanks. This worked for me.
My HP 2100TN is connected to a router and pinging the JetDirect ip address didn't work at first. After many tries and variations under "Print & Scan" sys prefs, the ping did work with the JetDirect ip address and I finished connecting by following your helpful instructions and links.
The HP 2100TN now prints from OSX 10.8.5 on a "late 2012" 27-inch iMac. The HP 2100TN printer drivers were copied to the sys printer folder from a previous computer running OSX 10.5.8 and which always printed sucessfully through this same router to the 2100TN and still does.
An even worse problem was trying to log into Apple Support Communities with the "username" endless runaround. I finally got to a "Find my Apple ID" link and discovered I had an old Apple ID which I didn't know still existed. I changed the password on that ID and then logged into ASC using the old ID. The login took me straight into the forum and displayed my old and long-forgotten ASC username for that ID. Why that worked, who knows?

  • HP LaserJet 2100TN and MacOS 10.4.2

May wife and I have been using our HP LaserJet 2100TN since a couple of years, originally with her blue/white iBook and my PowerBook Titanium, and since this spring with her 12" PowerBook G4 (867MHz, 768 MB of RAM, MacOS 10.4.2) and my 17" PowerBook G4 (1.67MHz, 1.5 gig of RAM, MacOS 10.4.2), both using our AirPort WiFi home network (the base station with the Ethernet jack in the back). As to the software side, we both do our word processing with Microsoft Word X (Service Pack 1). Everything was just plug&play, WYSIWYG, and fine.
Since a couple of days, however, our LaserJet prints out weird characters in our Word documents, regardless of what PowerBook we print from. The characters are actually still OK, but totally mixed up to nonsense words, and sometimes incorrectly spaced, as well. We first realized this problem when using typical decorative fonts (such as "Party LET"). When things started to deteriorate in "Times", too, we decided to post this SOS.
Does anyone know this problem, and how to fix it? Please note that we already reset the printing system in the pertinent control panel. Besides, we keep presuming that, in Tiger, there are no more HP LaserJet 2100TN drivers to download and install. Oh yeah, and the usual shut down/restart, and quit/re-open procedures do not seem to work, either.
Thanks in advance for your appreciated help!

  • HP LaserJet 2100TN printer problems

I am running OS 10.8.2 and recently added a new DLINK wireless router - none of my iMacs can find the HP LaserJet 2100TN printer.  Not sure if this happened when I installed the new router or the last Apple OS update - both were at approximately the same time and the printer did not work afterwords.  Other network MFP printer does work. I can find the IP address from the router so I know it is connected but when I try to add the printer using the IP address it says it can not find the driver from the downloads server.  I downloaded the driver package from the Apple Support site http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907 and installed the package with no improvement.  (I actually could not find anything to run after installing the package.)  Have shut down, rebooted numerous times to no avail.  I've tried different cables and even direct connecting the printer to the computer via ethernet cable (but did not expect this to work.)  Suggestions?  Why does the add printer effort return an error from the downloads server when the dialog says software is available from Apple?

I'm glad you finally succeeded. Your post was one I looked at trying to solve the same problem. But the drivers weren't visible for me after rebooting.
I spent 2 days trying to make my LJ 2100 TN work with OS 10.8.2. The kicker was that when I tried to add the printer to my existing [ethernet] network with my new iMac on Wi-Fi it killed the existing network. No computer could now print! I could still get on-line though.
I did a lot of research on the net; I called my ISP and did learn how to get the IP numbers on each device; I called Mac Tec, they passed the buck, saying because I wasn't using a Mac router they couldn't help.
This post is for others that can't see the drivers they just downloaded. I solved my problem today:
When I tried to add the printer to 'Print & Scan' the 'Add' window comes up; and even though I made the 2.12 download, there were no print drivers to be seen. Apple in it's infinite wisdom left out the 'Advanced' icon in the 'Add' window! Right click the header and add it. Now there is a function to actually search for the print drivers.
You will have to choose 'Type'. I tried a few but 'Jetdirect' worked best for me. NOTE: your printer should be on before you make your choices in the 'Add' window.
Add your printer's IP number in the 'URL' field.
In the 'Use' field, select your proper print driver.
If you did it all correctly, the 'Add' button will light up and hopefully add a new printer to the 'Print & Scan' window.
Good luck. [I also had the delete and replace the printer on my other 2 computers in the network to make them able to print again.]

  • Is my LaserJet 2100tn compatible with Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks?

I would like to upgrade my Mac to OS 10.9 Mavericks, but I have an old HP LaserJet 2100tn.  Will that printer be compatible with the new OS?  I am currently printing to the 2100tn from OS 10.7.5 - Lion.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hello
Yes, if your HP LaserJet 2100tn was working with OS X 10.7 or 10.8, it will continue to work fine with new OS X Mavericks after an OS upgrade
If you have a new Mac or clean OS X Mavericks system, HP also provides the LaserJet 2100tn driver via Apple Software Update.  Just make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the Mac when you create (add printer) the printer queue

  • MacBook Pro can't print to HP LaserJet 2100tn

    Hello,
I have an ethernet-connected HP LaserJet 2100tn in my office. I can print to it from my G4 laptop, but not from my new MBP.
    Some background/info:
-The HP has its IP set correctly and it is on the same network as my Mac. I can print to it from my other Windows and G4 macs.
-The ethernet connections are all working fine
-I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from HP (5.5.2.051). Twice.
-Restarted my Mac and the HP many times.
-I can open the printer's config (web browser) and ping it from my MBP.
    -MacOS is updated.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rich

Not sure if this is relevant, but I had print driver problems after using Migration Assistant. To fix it, I reinstalled the print drivers from the DVD, then re-installed the HPIJS / Foomatic drivers (i'm using an older HP D145, but they should work on your 2100)

  • HP LaserJet 2100TN Errors in Leopard

Greetings! First off, I must say that after searching the forums for the past hour, I've been impressed with this community, particularly Andrew (the HP developer). Unfortunately, I didn't find an answer, thus this posting!
I upgraded to Leopard about two months ago, and I get intermittent errors. I've outlined them below. I am connect via the IP JetDirect protocol.
The error usually comes when I'm printing certain graphics-intense files (such as a Microsoft Word document with several image files embedded). Here's an example of a page issued by the printer:
    ERROR: undefinedresult
    OFFENDING COMMAND: xshow
    STACK:
    [65.2 36.2 56.0 61.0 54.0 23.0 73.2 56.0 21.0 61.0 53.1 27.9999 23.0 0.0 ]
    (!"#$%&’#($)*&&)
If I connect to my HP LaserJet 3330 (via USB), I'm able to print the same file fine!

After the most recent security upgrade, my LaserJet 2100TN ceased to function completely (Error: Printer not responding).
I had emailed HP some time ago asking if and when they were going to support the Leopard upgrade with new drivers. I got the following response, which I finally did today, and it works beautifully. It even fixed the Tray 1, 2, manual feed issue that someone mentioned above.
    "Hello ,
Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center.
We understand that you are not able to print from OS 10.5 using your HP LaserJet 2100.
Regarding the Mac OS 10.5 when you make the upgrade or a brand new installation the Operating System should already come with the HP Drivers pre-installed and those are the ones who work with that OS. Also you can go to the Print & Fax Window and then you highlight the printer and go to options & supplies then go to drivers and from there you check what driver are you using can also select the Generic Postscript driver that should also be compatible with that printer and with your Operating System.
NOTE: Installing the Software from the HP Website might create you conflict since the drivers come already preinstalled with the OS. So we recommend doing an uninstall and then manually install them from Leopard DVD.
    Removing the .gz file:
Double-click the hard drive icon, by default labeled Macintosh HD.
    Double-click Library.
    Double-click Printers
    Double-click PPDs folder.
    Double-click Contents.
    Double-click Resources.
Scroll through the list until you find the HP Laserjet 2100 Series.gz file; single-click it and drag it to the Trash.
    Restart and empty trash
    Delete the printer
    Install HP Drivers for Leopard
Insert your Leopard installation DVD, click on the Optional Installs icon
    Then Optional Installs.mpkg
    Then Continue
    Agree to the License
Then from the Custom Install window click on the arrow next to the Printer Drivers
Then put a checkmark on the Hewlett-Packard Printer Drivers and then click on continue
Finish the installation and then restart your Mac.
    Add the printer again.
    Then try Printing.
Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center."

  • Changing the IP Address manually for Laserjet 2100TN

    Hi there--
We recently updated all the IP addresses for our LAN to facilitate the set-up of a VPN. Due to problems arising from DHCP address assignment in the past, we maintain addresses manually on the network. Unfortunately this has led to a problem where our old 2100TN is now unreachable on the ethernet network and we are unable to change its IP address; ordinarily this would not be an issue as the Macintosh computers on the network can still find it via AppleTalk, but the PCs are unable to locate it. I tried running HP's network set-up wizard from a PC connected to the network the printer's on and was unable to locate it even when I searched for the printer's hardware address; this was also the case when I connected directly to the printer with an ethernet cable.
Is there any other way to reconfigure the printer's network settings without potentially disrupting our entire network again? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried changing the printer's IP address manually from one of the Macs that can see it?
I include a copy of a reply on a related subject, from the person on this forum whose user name is IronBadger. Some of it may be helpful. Thank him if it helps.

IronBadger's helpful and informed post begins here:
Since Apple removed AppleTalk from 10.6 it may be slightly more complicated to connect your 5100.  But it is possible.
A lot depends on what your internet connection is.  Do you use wired or wireless ethernet to connect to the internet?  If you are using a wired connection your 5100 will need an IP address that matches your Macintosh.  This will involve using the printers control panel to manually assign a TCP/IP address that is in the same range as your Macintosh. Wireless instructions below.
If the Mac has an IP address of 169.254.12.54 and subnet mask as 255.255.0.0, change the IP of the printer to 169.254.12.55, change the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 and change the Gateway to match what is shown on  t he Mac.  If your Macintosh gets an IP address directly from your ISP (via DHCP) you may be required to obtain an additional address for the printer.
If you are using wireless (airport) to connect to the internet and just have the printer connected to the Macintosh with wired ethernet the information below should help you get connected.
I have copied a document below that discusses putting the printer on the same network as the Macintosh.
These are the instructions for manually configuring the IP Address on a Macintosh to match an AutoIP generated IP address on a printer.
When some HP LaserJet printers are connected to a network but there is not a DHCP or BOOTP server available it will generate an IP address in the AutoIP range of 169.254.x.x where the last two numbers are derived from the printer's MAC address.
To verify the printer's IP address print a configuration page.
If the printer configuration shows the IP in the Range of 169.254.X.X then the printer has typically self configured an IP address.
If the Macintosh is either not connected to the internet or is not using Built-in Ethernet for internet connectivity the IP address on the Macintosh can be configured to connect to the printer on a local network.
This can also be used to temporarily connect to a printer with no control panel and change its IP address.
Check the IP address on one of the computers on the local network:
    1. Click on the Apple menu.
    2. Select System Preferences.
    3. Select the Network System Preference.
    4. Click the TCP/IP tab, click the Configure IPv4 dropdown. and select “Manually.”
    5. Change the IP address as mentioned in the following example.
    • If the printer has an IP address of 169.254.12.54 and subnet mask as 255.255.0.0, change the IP of the computer to 169.254.12.55, change the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 and change the Gateway to 0.0.0.0.
Connectivity to the printer can be confirmed by:
Opening the embedded web server using a browser by typing http://<ip address of printer>.
Setting up a print queue for the printer using Print & Fax System Preference.
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Connect HP laserjet 2100TN to Imac 10.8 via ethernet cable

I want to connect my old HPlaserjet 2100tn to my new imac os 10.8 computer.  Apple and HP say it is compatible.  The printer was hooked to my G5 via the ethernet cable and worked fine.  There is no usb hookup for this printer that I can find.
I am able to find an IP address for the printer via network, the print/scan finds the printer and adds it, driver is in place (after some searching from apple) and everything looks good.  Only problem is it does not print.  Get error message saying the printer doesn't exist and some other similar messages.
Have spent way too much time talking with apple and HP andit apears I know more about this than them anyway.  It's too big a challenge I think.
Do I need to run through my router (old airport base staion that works just fine...looks like a spaceship) which has a port for another ethernet cable?  My internet is wireless, this printer in not wireless capable (IR though..old), but can I hook it in and operate that way without srewing up my wireless internet?
Come on...someone has the simple answer to this question.  Just want to use my old postscript laser printer every now and then.
    Thanks for your help.

This may not help at all, but I have an HP Color LaserJet 2605dn, and one day it just stop being part of my network, as far as I could tell. Would not print, could not be found on the network, even after manually putting in network information.
I reset the printer. I did a NVRAM initializer and a Super NVRAM initializer. I found out how from the service manual for the printer.
I the setup the printer again, like I had taken it out of the box new.
Runs fine. Prints, is found on the network, can use the web based software it has in it.
Maybe this may work for you.
    Good Luck.

  • Updating printer driver for laserjet 2100tn

I have recently updated my Mac Mini (PawerPC) to an iMac with Lion. HP says that the printer driver update is through Apple, and nothing I do seems to call the Print/Scan dialog to notice it. Thoughts?
    David

The printer may not be supported by Lion, if it's still supported the update will come from software updates. Just plug the printer straight into the iMac just run software updates and if there's any available it will pop up.

  • HP LaserJet 2100tn, Error message: "out of memory"

When I'm printing, an error message appears after printing the first page: "out of memory". My printer has 40MB of memory. I tried to change the printer settings for several time (8MB RAM, ..., over 30MB), but no result. The pages I want to print are from FileMakerPro.
I tried also to make a pdf file and to print, same result: first page o.k. then error message.
Thanks a lot for your answers.

  • Quo vadis Java?

I have been a programmer all of my adult life and a software developer ever since I can remember. My language of choice is the IBM OS/390 Assembler and the IBM mainframe is my world. All the things that seem big deals in C/C++/Java I was already doing namelessly in the IBM mainframe world eons ago. Byte code, I was doing 1401 emulations in the early 1970s. Polymorphism, I was writing code that supported not only different operating systems (PCP, MFT, MVS, HASP/JES, etc.) but also different releases of the same. Classes and inheritance, I have been doing SYSLIB autocalls by the Linkage Editor since ever.
It seems that nothing is new in computing. What is new is that the distinction between mini/micro and mainframe computers has blurred.
Ever since the PC came into existence I have peeked. First they were too slow and the Intel instruction set too horrible. Then the look and feel of Windows 3.1 was making me sick. In 1995/96 when PCs became fast enough and Windows95 sufferable, I tried Microsoft MFC but I gave up quickly. All of those files, I could never figure out which chunk of code was *.cpp, *.h, a resource or whatever.
In March of 2000 I picked up HTML and JavaScript. I produced quite a few things that I am very proud of, some even useful but I kind of lost interest along with the DOT.COM debacle.
In May of 2001 I tried semiseriously to pick up Java since I liked JavaScript.
I am now in the process of writing a File Management System for the PC in my spare time. It is clear to me that the mini/macro/Unix/C/C++/C#/Java world is minor league and Mickey-Mousey.
Do Java programmers really write programs of 200 lines at the most and stash them in folders within subfolders of subfolders ad nauseam?
Are Java programmers so feeble minded that cannot handle 10,000+ lines of code at the time? I have a photographic memory and all that shuffling from code file to code file is too disruptive for me.
And do Java programmers really call their variables for example JTextArea ta? Or only in Java books? My programming style is to first build tools for myself to find and cross reference whatever I am interested in. I try not to reinvent the wheel... I let you draw your own conclusions.
How is my Java File Management System doing? I have got almost all the needed ingredients but with lots of loose ends. For my own consumption it is starting to be OK.
I have an excellent files and folders finder also capable of searching for given strings and show the results in different useable formats. JTree Drag-and-Drop for the files. Simple, rich and HTML text editors. The menus, toolbar, and statusbar are in place and so are the routines that provide functionalities.
Why am I complaining then? Because major roadblocks exist. Let me explain...
    a) I need a Spell Checker (badly) and I do not have the time to write one myself.
    b) I need a Files Compare better than the preliminary one I wrote for now.
    c) I need a Cross Reference more sophisticated (keywords, delimiters) than the one I wrote for now.
    d) To be able to replace Windows Explorer and the Windows desktop I need:
    1) to know how to access and process *.dat files and registry keys
    2) to know how to access and process *.lnk files (desktop icons and shortcuts)
    3) get more file properties than just the length and the lastModified date
    4) get to the file associations (opens with)
    5) convert long file names to 8.3 names especially for file names with embedded spaces
    6) make "Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(my_cmd)" work all the time
If the above was not enough, I have to get around Java shortcomings:
    1) a replace() that does not support "null" so as to delete unwanted characters
    2) the horizontal TABs mess (still a problem)
    3) the EOL (End of Line) mess (still a problem)
    4) the special characters (like inverted quotes) mess (still a problem)
    5) line numbers and line wrap mess (still a problem)
    6) and finally SPEED, I could never be as fast as native Windows.
The above lists are not comprehensive of everything, just what I could think of as of now.
What do I think of the Java programmers that I have encountered so far?
    1) I have asked for a way to get the Date and Time of the Java compilation (like IBM global variables &SYSDATE and &SYSTIME). The answer I got was to use a precompiler! Here for all to see is my solution:
    public void showAboutBox() {
    File f_ile = new File("Jwb.jar");
    if (!(f_ile.isFile())) { f_ile = new File("Jwb.class"); }
    //SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("EEEE, MMMM d, yyyy (MM/dd/yy '-' yyyy.DDD) 'at' hh:mm:ss a");
    SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy.DDD");
    String info = "JWorkbench - 1.0  ";
    info+= sdf.format(new java.util.Date(f_ile.lastModified()));
    info+= "\n\nA desktop file management system.\nWritten by andre nicolai.";
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, info, "About", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
where "Jwb." is the code that has main().
    2) I have asked for examples for Drag-and-Drop of JTrees. No answers. The "core SWING advanced programming" book has an excellent example alas it did not take into account upper and lower case file names...
For the Linux/Unix people I have a message why bother when 97% of the PCs run on Windows? I want to be a guru for the masses not a geek. Given all the Java limitations, DOS line commands, no *.EXE files, spotty built-in functionalities, need for a JVM, etc... how do we take over from the evil empire that is Microsoft unless we provide more ease of use and functionalities than them?
    Comments please.

For one, java can be natively compiled (Excelsior JET, HotSpot, JIT, JOVE). If you want to make a program however that accesses system specific information, of course there will be some problems. They try to use the java VM to control alot of things, such as file names and the way the file system works. And give you ways to format the name of a file so that you can access it without being very specific about how the file system works. It's not a low level language you have to realize. It's very practical for some things currently. You can use it to make many applications with ease. But other things that other languages can do,
Java can't without becoming platform dependant in some way.
The specific project you are working is some what problematic. If you could access the specifications for the Virtual machine and make it behave how you'd like it to for this purpose, then you'd definitely have no problem. But the fact of the matter is you can't. You have to comply to the specifications Sun has set so that you can maintain pure Java.
I'm sorry that many Java programers are ignorant to all of it's features. Java is a fairly new language, and it changes VERY often. Java hasn't yet had a chance for it's main features to become stable or standard yet. There are many parts of it that many people still use that have become depricated within the last few months, or within the last year. Alot of Java programers find it difficult to keep up with Sun. I've leared alot about the newer classes and specifications included with jdk1.4, but I far from know everything about it. And alot of the problems you're confronting frankly aren't common things yet, more people will likely explore these problems in the future, but Java is a completely new battle field. With C++ you have many years of a stable set of librarys and solutions that have been around and stayed reasonably stable for years. You can post something on a message board, and some one is bound to have used it before, or know something about it.
Java changes very often. They are adding new features to it, and improving it, and trying to perfect it even as I type this message. And this is a great thing in my opinnion. If you have a problem with how Java is implemented, and have any solutions for them, or anything you feel would be a useful thing for them to look into, tell them! You can comment on their specifications, make suggestions, many things have been placed open for developers to tell Sun how they should improve and build on Java. They do have the ability to make native operations available to the VM if you really need them.
If you want to look at the real "Mickey-mousey" people, who really don't do any low level programing at all, go look for the UML object orieted designers. Those people who get payed alot more then the programers do for directing and implementing a design of an object oriented program. They probably couldn't answer your questions on how certain operations are done, or how to access windows system registrys. They can get alot of people who allready know these things, and have them write different blocks of the programs using the skills and knowledge they have, and then build an enormously complex program, far more complex then any single programer would be able to understand. Perhaps you can memorize your entire program, and build enormously complex systems for yourself, but object orieted design isn't made for just you. It's created so your code will be re-usable to other people.
You can change part of your coding, and they can implement it exactly the same as before, interface with it exactly the same as long as it meets it's previous implementation. Perhaps you can reuse your own code, but a procedural 10,000 line program is far less reusable then a program that's broken up into blocks where you can change pieces of it, and have it act exactly the same as previously. Packages are definitely the most practical way for Sun to go, as is object oriented programing design, as is the Virtual Machine. If you change your operating system, your computer, your processor, anything, all it takes is one program to make all others run. You only need ONE Virtual Machine, where as otherwise you'd need all programs to be redone, all of their funtionality would be lost. You can also upgrade ALL programs ever written for that VM, by simply upgrading the VM itself. If it uses any new optimizations, or techniques, or new HotSpot native compilation etc.. So will your program. So ALL programs ever written in Java are changed with any change to it's VM.
Perhaps if you're intersted in producing programs only for Windows Client sided programing, then you can deny Java completely. Java can be run on any computing system, on any handheld devices, on anything that has VM. It holds a large share of the market, it's very handy, but in the end it is just a language. It's a solution to some problems. So far, it's not been very friendly to client sided development, or anything that involves graphics. This is just a problem with it's earlier implementations. They've been working on making useful graphics librarys, and GUIs to use with your programs. I've been very impressed with the speed of Swing components in jdk1.4, as well as the additions to Java2D that includes offscreen hardware accelerated graphics. Java is moving it's way into the Client sided programing market, but it's been retarded, mostly because of Microsoft. It's had problems implementing many things because Microsoft keeps such a stronghold on it's operating system, and it's reluctance to include a non proprietary VM with it's system. Windows XP will be included with no VM, which will be a big problem for non-experienced computer users to utilize. Java applications can be run on Linux, and Solaris systems just like any other program. The reason they don't on windows, is because Microsoft doesn't want them to. Perhaps they'll conform in the future, Microsoft is one big problem Java is facing.

  • Quo vadis Creati

Many products in Creative's webstore appear to be out of stock. Creative announced the W and the Vision M 60 gig a few weeks ago but neither are for sale. Are there serious problems with the business health of the company beyond the seemingly poorly handled move into its new US digs?

  • Lightroom Quo Vadis?

I subscribed to the Adobe photography subscription, even without the need to use Photoshop often. I mostly subscribed because Adobe gave the impression that subscribers may receive additional benefits (as a subscription is actually more expensive over the major version period than a paid upgrade), that new functions will be released more incrementally, and that new camera support will be released more timely.
All this dies not happen. There is no mention (not to speak of a beta) of Lightroom 6, so the promise of more incremental development has not been materialized.
Adobe introduced Lightroom mobile, which is a benefit for subscribers, but it has absolutely no practical use for me. I would have liked to see a mobile Lightroom as way to import my RAW files onto my iPad, so that I have a backup, and that I can start to do basic image management work, while traveling, such as keywording, rating, and add the IPTC attributes to an image. Nothing like this happened. As it seems, I cannot even import my raw files directly from my iPad card connector into Lightroom mobile. It is only able to snyc from my main Lightroom catalog via the Adobe cloud, which is useless, when you travel and when you have no broadband connection or when image transfer is out of questions because of online costs. So for traveling photographer, Lightroom mobile is actually useless.
Instead, Adobe focuses its mobile strategy on image editing, instead of image management, which is a hge mistake. I won't edit images on any mobile device, because it does not make a lot of sense. Image editing is for me and presumably a lot of others something done on large and good monitors. Mobile editing could have some meaning for some quick and dirty stuff, but to me, a proper local raw import and image management would be more important. Ironically, the iPad Foto app can import my raw files and show the images  with no problems (embedded JPEGs), so why can't Lightroom mobile?
Add to this, the recently slow support of additional cameras. Adobe was usually the quickest. Photokina is more than a months ago, new cameras a readily available, sensors haven't changed a lot. Currently, E-PL7 support is not in sight, there is even no release candidate for a Lightroom version, supporting this camera.
Adobe wants to squeeze out more money from us, via tis cloud model. Which is ok. But only, if you improve the service and benefits for subscribers!
I am a Lightroom user from Lightroom 1 beta! I was up to now very happy with it. Therefore, I subscribed, also to support the product. But today, it is the first time, I am absolutely not satisfied. Adobe Lightroom strategy is going into the wrong direction, unfortunately, and promised subscriber benefits are close to nothing.

    Hello,
I fully agree to the words of Thomas !
I also started with Lightroom 1 / PS6/7 and bought all available updates up to Lr 5 and PS-CS6. Then the subscription came along and I jumped on the train and bought the subscription for existing users as an update. The first 'kick in the ***' came when Adobe offered the subscription for the same price as upgraders who have spent thousands of bucks to the products to all people. The next kick is that Lightroom is not updated permanently as PhotoShop is. To my understanding of a subscription, this is one of the main features.
Now we are at a point in which ACR is further developed than Lightroom ? Surely we got the mobile opions for lightroom, but for me, like Thomas said before, is worth nothing though I don't want to do any work to my pictures on the iPad. Furthermore, it to me it makes no sense to first import the pictures into Lr on PC ( or Mac), then create a collection called mobile, then wait for the upload of the pictures to Adobe's cloud and then again wait for the download to the iPad.
Since more than 1 month there is a beta for ACR 8.7 which gives support to new cameras - where is the Lr 5.7 beta ? I remember earlier, prior to the subscription mode, there were a few days in between the beta for ACR and Lr.
At this point, the complete subscription in the way offered and used by Adobe looks to me as just a simple way to make much more money for Adobe, and all things getting worst for the customer, especially for customer who are more interested in Lightroom than into PhotoShop !
if you are able to change my mind, please, convince me, Adobe !
