HP Mini: (Missing Keys) No PgUp Home or End, Never Buy HP Again !

Q:
Guess who caused me several hours of necessary work this week, and possibly more to come ?
A:
The utter geniuses at HP, who designed a "netbook", without the keys that people use most on the net !
The provided shortcut hotkeys ( fn + arrow ) for those functions simply dont work, or rather they ONLY work on the least secure, poorest designed operating system ever, Microsoft Windows. Maybe you collaborated ? Probably.
So those of us who use a mac / unix / linux variant ( ie secure OS) on your netbook are just out of luck.
IT TAKES SPECIAL DRIVERS TO USE YOUR PROPRIETARY HOTKEYS !!!!!!!!!!!
(Just go with the standard keyboard keys, they will be future proof.)
So to use your netbooks, means thousands and thousands of unnecessary key presses and mouse clicks.
The extra strain I feel in my fingers is fast turning to a seething dislike of your design team.
I got to get one of these for free, only to find out that it was lacking vital functions... the boss didnt check to see if these netbooks worked or not.
So you basically STOLE my chance at having a working netbook, as if you had broken into my house and took it. Why would I feel this way? Because this HP mini is only fit for the garbage dump with the inconvenient and frustrating keyboard.
I will only throw it away / give it away ( to someone I dont like ).
Conclusion:
FULL KEYBOARD
Thanks for your time.

Romeo, see this thread and specifically the post from Cyclops:

There's a zip file there with a little piece of software that gives you:
page-up : control + up key combo
page down : control + down key combo
home : control + left key combo
end : control + right key combo
It definitely works - I now use it - and although it's not the perfect solution (you have to run it each time you start up your computer) it is certainly VERY good to have these keys!

  • Terminal key bindings for Home and End

    I am recording this here in the hope of savings others some time.
    It is often stated that the following Terminal key bindings have to be asserted to get Home and End keys working as intended:
    \033OH
    \033OF
    I find this misleading as it is neither what most people would type nor what they would see.
    I type:
    escape O H
    escape O F
    This results in:
    \033oh
    \033of
    which works as intended but using 'shift' to produce the capitals depicted in most notes about this will not work.

    My default bindings did not work for home and end but page up and page down inexplicably worked with shift. The image below shows the keys and their bindings (eg \033[5~ and \033[6~ stated here for Google!) I applied to Terminal to make home, end, page up and page down behave in the same way as many other applications including iTerm. Remember to type 'esc' to get '\033'.
    I started out trying to improve the readability of large manual pages (eg man bash). Whilst the changes above improved things considerably I have now found better alternatives.
    I tried iTerm - the keys worked correctly but inconsistencies between the various window size settings did not inspire confidence.
    I now use ManOpen.app which I have configured to open when I type eg 'm chmod' in Terminal - I changed the name of openman to m and put it together with openman.1 in /usr/bin. The pages scroll normally and have hot links to other manual items. This is a simple way to vastly improve manual reading. The only slight negatives I have found are:
    1 - two preference panes will not open - defaults OK for me
    2 - window positions not remembered - since size can be set I can live with this
    3 - text cannot be set to soft wrap to window width (misnamed zoom by some applications).
    I would be interested to hear if others have found better ways of viewing manuals.

  • Key combination Ctrl-Home Ctrl-End not working.

    vim has a default binding for <Ctrl-Home> goes to the beginning of the file and <Ctrl-End> for the end.
    However, I couldn't get these key combinations to work for me. And I've consulted the #vim channel on freenode.
    They said it maybe a problem that the terminal I'm using caught the key and didn't send it to vim, but I find this conjecture hard to believe, because I've since been testing several terminals including xfce's default, roxterm, tilda, lxterminal, lilyterm ... and none of them working.
    Later when I reboot I found that, even under the pure console (tty), the combination still doesn't work !
    So this must be a problem from the original key mapping itself, and not latter stuffs like xfce, terminals and editors etc...
    can anyone help me fix this ? I've also seen the wiki articles but unfortunately they aren't very helpful.

    The <C-{Home,End,Left,Right}> key combinations work in Xterm, but not in urxvt. All of the terminals that I recognize mentioned above are all VTE based terminals. This thread here:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … +bug/89660
    is showing a lot of people with gnome-terminal, also VTE based, as not working either. It's definitely a terminal issue.
    The following page explains how to get Vim to recognize key combos that are usually trapped or unmapped by the terminal:

  • Remap PGUP/Home and PGDN/End keys using Steelseries Engine

    I just got an MS60 Ghost Pro.  I didn't pay attention to it before I bought it, but the document location keys are all lumped together.  I use this laptop for work and play, so having to push extra keys to use Home and End is extremely awkward.
    Is there a way to remap the PGUP key so it just does Home, and the PGDN key just does End using the Steelseries Engine?  Ideally, I'd like to switch the mapping so PGUP does Home and Fn + PGUP does Page Up.  I tried to do it with a macro and it kept saying "Reserved."  Has anyone else dealt with this issue?  Couldn't find a quick answer through a Google search.  Thx.

    To get what you need, you have to remap key function in two different keyboard layers and I do not think it would increase your work efficiency. You can set PGUP key as "home" in a layer and set PGUP key as its default in another layer and switch between layers when needed. OR you can assign another key as PGUP function and set PGUP key as home key in one layer which will be more efficient in my opinion, then you do not need to switch layers.
    When you see "reserved" in keypreses column, you are one step left to complete the setup. Just goto Profiles at the left hand column and press save button.

  • Microsoft word 2013 function home and end keys not working together on HP Envy X2

    Please help I've tried out Microsoft Office Word 2013 on two HP Envy X2 11.6" laptops/touch screen with keyboard and when I am in a Word document and am at the end or beginning of a document and select the FUNCTION KEY AND THE HOME OR END KEY, it does nothing. This is not the case in Internet Explorer or a web browser.  There is a problem with the HP keyboard and Office 2013 or maybe any Word app. Help me as I use documents alot and rely on this function heavily.  I can only page up or scroll up using the bar. It is not ideal.

    Hi rosedoc12,
    I have done some research and I have found a document that will show you how to disable or lock the fn key.

  • HP 110-3135DX missing PgUp/Dn, Home, and End keys

    As a precursor, I've been using an earlier model HP 110 up until now, so I'm used to the Fn+Arrow keys for this functionality previously. However, I got a new model, the 3135DX, and the Fn+Arrow key combos aren't working. Too, there's no (even very dark black-on-black) text referencing PgUp/PgDn on the arrow keys, or anywhere else. I use these keys for work and having to stop what I'm doing to fiddle with a scrollbar is irritating as all get-out. Is this accidental, or a design thing? And if the latter, who the heck thought this was a good idea? Is there any way I can get this functionality back, or am I going to have to go back to the store with a receipt and a "defective" laptop keyboard?

    I am having the same issue.  I hope HP will be able to provide a fix that allows the Home, End, PageUp, and PageDown keys to be triggered via a fn key combination.
    In the meantime, I found a free, opensource utility on the Internet that allows you to create your own hot keys (www.autohotkey.com) and created a hotkey script that uses the Windows key in combination with the arrow keys to substitute for the missing keys.
    For some reason, the #Left::Home key  did not work for me as I expected.  However, after some tinkering, the following AutoHotKey script is working very well for me:
    #Left:END {Home}
    #+Left::+Home
    #^Left::^Home
    #^+Left::^+Home
    #Right::End
    #Up:: PgUp
    #Down:: PgDn
    I hope this helps others who are suffering from the missing keys.

  • Missing keys from Mini 210-1155DX

    I just bought a Mini 210-1155DX. So where are the Home, End, Pg Up and Pg Dn keys? The specs say it has a 102 key standard keyboard.

    Folks, Mini 210-1000 Series supports Home, End, PgUp and PgDn, it is just not been labeled...If it not working I would suggest Updating the BIOS to F.11 from here and check...

  • Mac Mini w/ Apple USB keyboard - question about home and end keys

    I purchased a USB white Apple keyboard to go with my Mac mini.
    My question concerns the home and end keys. When I put the cusor focus in a text field or text area, I would expect that hitting the home key would take me to the beginning of the line and hitting the end key would take me to the end of the line.
    That's not the case?
    If a vertical scrollbar is used in the window, then the home key takes me to the top of the window and the end key takes me to the bottom of the window.
    Please forgive me, I've been on a PC for the last 10+ years, so I thought I should ask.
    What key or key combo moves you to the start and end of a text in a text field or text area?
    Thanks,

    Hi Todd,
    Use the arrow keys with the command key (⌘):
    command + left arrow -> beginning of the line
    command + right arrow -> end of the line
    command + arrow up -> beginning of the text
    command + arrow down -> end of the text
    Explore also the option key (⌥) possibilities, with the arrow keys:
    very handy too.
    Yes, the Home, End, Pageup and Pagedown keys are for controlling the whole document, not the text itself.

  • Just switched to MAC from Windows...missing my home and end keys.  Is there a MAC equivalent?

    I am sure there are combination keystrokes to equate to windows, but haven't found them all yet.  What is a good resource for finding this information?

    If you get a wireless PC keyboard with Home and End keys, most programs that use that often will support it.
    For instance Firefox and the free LibreOffice supports those features.
    It's just a lot of Apple programs don't.

  • PgUp, PgDn, Home and End not working

    Hey all,
    I'm using the G62 Laptop and just noticed in the last few days that the home, pgup, pgdn and end keys have not been functioning (I've tried both using Chrome and Microsoft Office and they haven't worked with those programs).
    My operating system is Windows 7.
    Thanks

    Hello wamiq_saifi,
    Welcome back to the HP Forums!
    I understand you are having some issues with your keyboard buttons not responding.
    I would suggest following this document from start to finish: Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting (Windows 7). It will walk you through common fixes for this kind of issue.
    It would help to know which operating system you are using. To see which version of Windows you are using click here: Which Windows operating system am I running?
    I look forward to your reply!

  • Stream 7 Keyboard missing keys?

    Surprised to not have an "Esc" key, which is pretty standard on keyboards.  I can live without the function keys, but that Esc is used by a lot of program.
    Anyone have a good workaround?
    (PS: anyone else miss iPad's automatic turn-on or turn-off when you open the screen?  Anyone miss a physical Windows key, which many other tablets use as an alternate on-switch, as well as a way to get to multiple hidden commands?)
    This question was solved.

    You can change to a more complete keyboard. Bring up the keyboard and tap the button in the bottom right corner (it has a kb symbol with a down arrow.) From left to right, the choices are Default, Split, Pen, and Advanced. You can switch kb's anytime you like, even in the middle of writing.
    The advanced kb is nearly complete, missing only the Home and End keys, but you easily achieve those actions with a tap on the screen.

  • Anyone know how to use a 'home' and 'end' key on the Macbook pro keyboard?

    I had a pc before, and the keyboard had home and end keys on the keyboard for quickly moving cursor to end or beginning of word or sentence.  I can't figure out if there is something like that on the Macbook pro.  It would be really helpful.  So does anyone know if there is those keys and if so what do i use?
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks

    see if any of this works for you
    On a smaller keyboard, such as the wireless, or on portables, you can use fn- left arrow for home and fn- right arrow for end.
    On a Mac, 'home and 'end' take you to the beginning and the end of document, respectively. Getting to the beginning or end of a line is done with cmd- leftarrow and cmd- rightarrow. Emacs shortcuts, such a ctrl-a and ctrl- e also work in most places, where the app is done right.

  • "Home" and "End" keys in FCP on MacBook Pro (2008/09)

    I just started using my new MacBook Pro 17. While I was in FCP and tried to move the playhead to the "Home" position, I realized that my keyboard doesn't have a "Home" or an "End" key. What keys/functions do I need to use in this case? When I tried to look up the solution online, I found a forum in which someone suggested "Command/Arrow Key" (up for "Home" and "down for "End") but that didn't work.
    Thank you!

    On my macbook pro hitting function (the "fn" key) and the left arrow works for home, and function and right works for end. My laptop is a few years old, but I'd assume it's still the case.

    No, I have not chosen photos to share as I assumed that the Apple TV would access all photos and music that are stored on my iMac.
    Thanks for your advice. I will check it out.

  • My up and down arrows as well as page up and page down no longer work properly only when using firefox. Page up and down function more like the "home" and "end" keys as do the arrow keys.

    Honestly I'm not sure if these began just after I updated FF to the current release, but it's been happening for at least 2 weeks. The arrow keys and page up and page down keys all work as if I'm pressing the 'home' and 'end' keys on my keyboard. This is only when using FF. Please contact me if you need more clarification. Thanks in advance!
