HP Pavilion DV6; Black Screen & Atikmpag.sys BSOD with external Monitor

Hello Guys.
I have HP Pavilion DV6 Core i7 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Graphics Card. Two weeks ago, I started getting continous Atikmpag, sys BSODs. The operating system also started giving me warnings about the hardrive. After a few days, the BSODs got more frequent. Then one day, I was doing normal stuff on my PC and the Display Driver crashed. Instead of recovering, the PC froze. I forced restart my PC but it got worse. The display of my laptop went black. I connected the laptop to external monitor which detected the display. When I tried to load the windows, it started giving me the Atikmpag.sys BSOD on the start up. Now the operating system works fine in the Safe Mode but with nothing on the laptop's screen. The soultions I have tried so far are.
-Reinstalled the windows thrice
-Removed the drivers and installed the updated ones a bunch of times.
-Rolled back the bios to an earlier version
-Removed the hardrive and tried to load it from an operating system installed on external flash drive
-Tried loading the PC with linux on external flash drive
-Opened the laptop and cleaned it thoroughly
-Removed all the components and plugged them one by one.
-Removed the old Atikmpag.sys in system32 folder and expanded it with the latest ones.
-Installed every thing fresh from HP website
None of these tricks have given me any luck yet. The only way, I could use the operating system in normal mode, is to delete the atikmpag.sys file in safe mode and then log on back in normal mode. I also analysed the minidump file through window debugger and it says that atikmpag.sys is causing this crash with the TDR message. I did all these with an external monitor as the display of the laptop is black since that day.
Below are the detailed specs of my laptop.
OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium
Version: 6.1.7601
System Model: HP Pavilion Dv6 Notebook PC
Processor: Intel Core i7 Q 721 @ 1.60 GHz
Bios Version/Date: Hewlett- Packard F.29, 11/7/2011
Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 6GB
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1 GB
I have tried almost every solution available on these forums but still have not gotten any where. I am wondering how could the display, graphics card and hard drive stop working at the same time .
I would really appreciate if someone colud help me through this problem.
Thank you
P.S. Kindly ignore my English mistakes as it is not my first language.

    Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz 15" Aluminum
After watching a dvd, I turned the laptop off and closed the lid before the screen was completely dark. I also forgot to take the dvd out. The next day I get a start up chime and a black screen. Will not work with external monitor. Will not let me do pram reset as I couldn't see the picture anyway. Hard drive appears to be fine. I tried swapping the two ram modules. Took the lower one out and still no results. My main question is, before I just geek out and put a new logic board in, what are the possible loose connection  (cables) causes?

This issue is not unfamiliar among PowerPC G4 users, in desktop or portable models.
The cause may vary and so when looking through incidents of a similar nature, try to
be patient and get past duplicate-sounding experiences as referenced by the sources.
There are more than a few in this search thread that sound like your situation:
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=powerbook+g4+black+screen+on+startup
Depending on the PowerBook model, some have clock battery/capacitor on logic board
that once it fails, there can be startup issues as a result... So that's one to check. And
then there are the connections that may have come loose on the logic board, over years
of handling and small movement, these could finally have failed to contact finally. Or the
DC-in Board may have chosen to fail, so power may be unable to get past a circuit.
Troubleshooting based on a few symptoms can be... troublesome, tedious; or costly.
The iFixit.com guides have sections where people asked questions, such as:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/131619/PowerBook+g4+has+startup+chime+no+ima ge
The keyboard shortcuts to attempt to force a computer to start may be of no avail if
the hardware has defects, or if wires have come off their necessary junctions inside.
If you have time and some money, companies who specialize in repairing Apple
portable computers could restore its function & warranty their work. wegenermedia
is worth contacting if the computer is one you want to keep around while. They did
a repair for me on one of my Apple portables, and I'd probably go that route again.
So, anyway, if the unit uses a clock or PRAM battery, it may need replacement.
Or in another direction, issue could be a power related circuit failure; or worse.
There are graphic display components that fail at a point where an external &
internal display both won't light up. These are mapped out in iFixit guides or in
others online, depending on the model G4 PowerBook they show.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Pavilion DV6, Black Screen and 3 Caps Lock Blink

    HI,
I have an Hp Pavilion DV6 and I am getting the 3 blinks on the caps lock. When I turn on the PC it starts up, the caps lock blinks 3 times and the screen is just black. I have already tested the memory sticks, drain the battery, and hooking it up to an external monitor.  Nothing shows on the other monitor and it just remains black. Please help!

    Hi @shmurray,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand you are getting a blink pattern on the Caps lock LED, when you turn on the notebook. I am happy to help you with this.
I am including the page on the error codes for your reference: Blank Screen LED Error Codes
From that document the pattern you are getting indicates a memory problem. You said that you have tested the memory. What exactly did you try?
The document suggests reseating the RAM or trying a new set of RAM and then restarting the notebook. If you are still getting a memory problem after trying both of those things, ie a 3 blink code again, then it would likely suggest that there is a problem with the motherboard itself, either with the memory slot or one of the controllers related to memory.
In that case I would suggest contacting the technical phone support number at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

If however reseating the memory or replacing it leads to a different error code or message please let me know, Although in that case the following may be helpful if you still have a blank screen.

  • Black border on DVD playback with external monitor...why?

    Hi all,
I've got a late 2011 MBP 13". Very happy with it (although use is limited as a DJ laptop - and, since I moved abroad, as the basis for a home cinema) and was quite happy to watch films / TV on it as it came. However, I wanted to be able to watch with other people and so have invested in an external monitor.
I have bought a Philips 23" V-line (model number 236V3L). I am completely happy with the picture quality etc but just have an issue during DVD playback:
The image (on fullscreen mode) has a 2" black border all the way round. I've tried fiddling with settings etc but can't seem to lose it...and don't know why. I wouldn't mind but obviously my 23" image is significantly smaller as a result.
Can anyone tell me why? When using the laptop in any other way (i.e. whilst typing this post) there is a 3/4" border on the left and on the right (but not at the top). Is it something to do with the aspect ratio? Is there anything I can do to fix it?
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts...
    Regards,
    Fin

I use my laptop and a Samsung SyncMaster as my main screen and my MBP as the secondary. I can drag the DVD window to the laptop screen, and then put it in full screen mode. Here is where the problem lies: When I click any application on the primary monitor, the DVD screen shrinks back to normal size.
In DVD Player's "Full Screen" preference. enable "Remain in full screen when DVD PLayer is inactive".

  • W520 screen saver wont work with external monitor.

I have a Dell 30" U3011 monitor connected via display port.
I have the computer set to "projector only" (when you hit windows-P).
There are no controls on the monitor to tell it to sleep.
In Windows 7, I have the screen saver set to "blank" after 10 minutes.  However, it never goes blank after 10 minutes - the screen saver never kicks in.
In the windows powerplan, I have it set to turn off the display after 15 minutes when plugged in.  It never turns of the display.
I have it set to dim the dipsplay afer 10 minutes to 0% brightness.  It never dims the display
In the Lenovo power manger,  I have "screen saver" ticked under Global power settings->Dynamic brighness control.  I cant find any more display saving type options under the lenovo power manager.
Its the standard Lenovo factory install of windows.
It works fine when using the internal Lenovo panel.
I have two dell laptops with windows 7, and neither has this problem - only the Lenovo.
The problem is, if I leave the computer on for say 5 hours, I come back and the screen is burnt in with the windows I have open. The monitor cost £1400 - I its as expensive as the Lenovo. If it came down to the lenovo or the montior, I think I would go with the monitor.
Any one got the same problem?
Putting the machine to sleep every time I leave the machine for more than 10 minutes would be a temporary workaround, except for the huge bug on the lenovo  "forgets" my external mintor settings when it wakes up - and goes back to the internal panel.  When I reboot, it always gets it right however, it does remember that I am on projector only.  However, rebooting every time I leave the machine for half an hour would requireme to wait for several minutes while the machine boots up - so thats not an option either.
    Solved!

Do yourself a favor.  Temporarily remove flash and re-test.

  • E2500 Wireless Causing Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with My Company's VPN (AT&T Net Client)

Since recently replacing my home router with a Linksys E2500, I have been getting Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with my Company's VPN (AT&T).  It only happens when I am running wireless with my E2500.  If I am hooked up to my E2500 through a ethernet cable it doesn't happen.  I have updated the BIOS on my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 and ensured all of my drivers are up to date.  I am  99.9% sure the problem is caused by my Linksys E2500 because I have used my laptop on other wireless routes at work and school and never get this problem.  I am also ensured that my E2500 has the current firmware installed and upgraded my Company's VPN to the most current level to no avail.
I am getting DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Blue Screen of Death in agnfilt.sys.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The symptoms you describe could be symptomatic of a variety of things to include hardware/software issues, overheating caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing or underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty or unsigned device drivers, CMOS battery going bad, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware components, programs hanging or unresponsive in the background, and even malware. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to shutdown/restart on a more regular basis.
If the machine is only crashing at home after establishing a connection but not at work when establishing a connection, then its probably an issue with your network configuration or something (i.e. wireless adapter) causing a conflict and not a malware issue.
The DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error is usually due to a bad driver or faulty/incompatible hardware or software. This error condition means that a kernel-mode process or driver tried to access a memory location to which it did not have permission, or at a kernel Interrupt ReQuest Level (IRQL) that was too high.

I find it strange I cant ask Toshiba direct about my problem but I have to wait for a kind hearted person to solve my problem or give me a helping hand

Of course you can ask Toshiba. Toshiba has Authorized service providers worldwide and I hope some of them are in your country too.
So please visit Toshiba support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Download > Find an ASP and contact nearest service provider. Just explain the situation and I hope they will help you.
    Back to your problem:
It is not easy to say why this happen. The whole issue is not described so well and I am missing some important points.
Maybe you have upgraded RAM and now notebook doesnt start properly. It is also possible that CPU is defective. It can be so many different reasons for this.
Best thing you can do is to contact service and ask for help. they can run diagnostic tools and find out quickly what the problem is.

  • Yosemite: Turning off Macbook Pro screen (lid open) with external monitor connected

Here we go again, this worked pre-Yosemite. Now it seems this trick no longer works. After following these steps again the screen on my Macbook Pro now turns on after logging in and opening the clam shell.
Anyone figure out/know a way to turn off the screen on the Macbook Pro with external monitors plugged in? (yes, closing the clam shell–but I'm referring to keeping the clam shell open with the display turned off)
    http://gizmodo.com/5938452/a-trick-to-make-using-an-external-monitor-with-your-m acbook-way-better
    To execute in Terminal:
    sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
    To undo in Terminal:
    sudo nvram -d boot-args
Once you type it into terminal I believe you need to enter your password. I then restart my machine. Now the TRICK is to either restart your machine with the lid already closed (hit restart then slam the lid!) OR turn the machine on for the first time (then quickly slam the lid!) once you are past the login screen you can open the lid.

Has anyone experimented with tip 2 (active corners)?  Perhaps it still works.

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • Pavilion dv6 Broken Screen

The screen on my Pavilion dv6 notebook is cracked. I was wondering how I should go about having it repaired. I am not sure if it is under warranty but if it is not, how much should I be expecting to pay?

    @jtrynkar
You do not have to buy the parts (new screen) from HP, you can save even more money if you do the work yourself.
What is the full model number of your dv6, eg dv6-xxxx xx.
     I use these people.
     http://www.laptopscreen.com/?gclid=CKGuupvhlKgCFecbQgodelUyCw
If you do not want to replace the screen by itself, but as a whole unit, then yes it would get expensive buying one directly from HP. Sometime you can find one from a third party vender.
I will be able to help you more ounce I have your full model number. If your machine is a CTO (custom to order) please give me the P/N as well. You will find this on the underside of the laptop and will be marked P/N.

  • Black screen after logging in KDE (dual monitor)

    Hi everybody,
I'm having a severe problem with kde 4.12.2; I'll explain my settings:
    1) A screen 2560x1440 on DVI
    2) A screen 1920x1080 on VGA
    My /etc/X11/xorg.conf is this
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-I-1"
    Option "Primary" "true"
    Option "PreferredMode" "2560x1440"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "VGA-1"
    Option "LeftOf" "DVI-I-1"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    EndSection
when kdm starts I can see login manager on both screen (each one with the correct resolution). As far as I log in all disappear on both screen: it remains only a completely black screen (in which I manage to recognize mouse pointer). The strange fact is that I can still use yakuake (without seeing it), as a matter of facts if I digit "reboot" on command line in yakualke, my PC effectively reboots... but i cannot see anything.
If I use only one monitor (disconnecting the other) all is ok.
I've also i3 working perfectly with the same configuration.
