HP Pavilion dv7 MediaSmart Not reading Blu-Rays

Thanks for reading!
I love this notebook however it can't play my Blu-Rays! I think it messed up my Fast 5 Blue-Ray disc..
So I bought a cheap blu-ray movie (thank you Black Friday) and still nothing! It loads up fine until the movie actually plays then nothing happens, for awhile until I open task manager..
here are the specs:
Yes I have the latest MediaSmart update since I've attempted to update but was not available.
It seems others are faced with this problem and have even downloaded different players.
Oh yes one more thing, the DVD player itself works fine. It's just the Blu-Ray player..
Again thanks for reading and will answer any questions..Thank you!

Hi,
If you're using HP MediaSmart DVD to play the Blu ray disc, try the following.
HP now provides a version of Cyberlinks PowerDVD 10 which seems to be a better solution.  Download the installer for this on the link below and save it to your Desktop.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53029.exe
When the download has completed, open windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for HP MediaSmart DVD and select Uninstall - when this process has completed, restart the notebook.
When windows has reloaded, double-click the installer for PowerDVD 10 to start the installation.  When this has completed, see if your Blu ray disc now plays OK.
Regards,
DP-K

  • Sony Optiarc BD Rom BC-5500S is not reading blu ray disks

I have a pavilion dv7-1070ev and upgrade from windows vista home premium 32bit  to Windows 7  home premium 64bit.The laptop came with the optical drive Sony Optiarc BD Rom BC-5500S with Firmware version 1.83.The problem is that the bd-rom is not reading blu ray disks. When i put in CD's/DVD's everything is fine -> drive starts to spin up and a little later the disc is readable/available in windows. When i put in a BluRay disc -> drive just makes a very short silent spin effort (to identify disc?),and no disc is available in windows. When i double click my drive icon (in my computer) it pops up a window asking me to insert a disc.Note that it is the first time I put blu-ray disk to watch blu-ray movie.I have never used the bd-rom when the laptop had windows vista.
The drive is compatible with windows 7 b4bit

Searched in forums I found these solutions :
    A clean registry
    1. To begin the process, start the Registry Editor.
Click START,click RUN, type REGEDIT, and then click OK.
Click the plus(+) next to the following folders in the left side of the window pane:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
        SYSTEM
        CurrentControlSet
        Control
        Class
        (4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318)
      2. Look for any of the following names in the right side of the window pane:
        UpperFilters
        LowerFilters
    3. If any of the items above are listed, right click on the item and select DELETE.
    4. Be sure to restart your computer after you have deleted the files in the registry.
    B.new firmware
1.Download the latest version for the retail version of this drive from sony at:
     http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/uploads/media/WinDL_BC5500S_V106_02.zip
Sony says that you can only update from Firmware versions 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1,04 and 1.05. Previous firmware version(s) other than mentioned here are probably OEMs and therefore cannot be updated with this file.  Contact  your PC manufacturer (FTS, DELL, HP....) if you require firmware updates for these drives.
I have HP version 1.83 dated December 2007 so I cannot update.
    C.Uninstall/install bd-rom
Uninstall bd-rom from device manager ,restart the pc and then looking for drivers.
    searching not found something.
My driver is up to date (21/06/2006) and the driver is 6.1.7601.17514
    D.Clean the laser lens
I put a cd cleaner to clean the lens, but that didnt help
I have used the solutions but the problem is not solved.
    Can anyone help ;

QuickPlay is made by Cyberlink who also makes Power DVD 10, 11 and 12 products.
You have to uninstall QuickPlay and all Power DVD products (don't use QuickPlay anymore, it's outdated and it will not be updated as it's been long discontinued). There is also a Power DVD folder(s) that needs to be deleted as well.
After you have uninstalled everything, run CCleaner as many times as necessary and delete what it finds in its registry cleaner.
     http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Here is also a link for Power DVD11 cleaner as well, use this after CCleaner.
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/16915.page (restart after all of this)
Are you running the trial of DVD or have you paid for it ? If you want to purchase some Blu-ray software then stay away from Cyberlink, I use Total MediaTheatre 5 and it's much better.
Also available for free is Power DVD 10 for HP owners, when installed correctly, it's OK, but it's not with out its problems.
If you want to install Power DVD10, then post again.
The other thing that worries me is your Sony drive, I have had many people here that I can't get the Sony drive to read Blu-ray's. I don't know if its firmware is out of date (there is no firmware update) or if the new updated Blu-ray players have become incompatible.
You may be forced to buy a Pioneer or HP Blu-ray reader.

  • HP desktop computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs. Who is responsible for this?

In 2010, I blought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE 250-f desktop computer (running Windows 7). This computer was advertised as having a Blu-ray DVD player, as well as players for regular DVDs and CDs. All these years, I've been successfully playing regular DVDs and CDs. Until now, I have not attempted to play a Blu-ray DVD.
I recently rented the "Divergent" Blu-ray DVD (as well as the "Divergent" regular DVD) from my local library. When I tried to play the Blu-ray DVD, the HP MediaSmart software and the Windows Media Player detected the Blu-ray but were not able to play the Blu-ray.
I then downloaded the Media Player Codec Pack, http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html    This Codec Pack was supposed to help Windows Media Player play the Blu-ray. That did not work. When I got rid of the Codec Pack using System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player became unable to detect the Blu-ray in the Blu-ray drive. After another System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player were once again able to detect the Blu-ray (but were still unable to play the Blu-ray).
I then downloaded Cyberlink PowerDVD 14, which played the Blu-ray for only about 7 seconds before crashing. I then got rid of Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 with a System Restore.
I downloaded TotalMedia Theatre version 6.0.1.123. However, this software did not detect the Blu-ray. I then got rid of TotalMedia Theatre with a System Restore. After that, I was not able to play ANYTHING, including CDs and regular DVDs. CDs and regular DVDs were not being detected by playing software. After another System Restore, I was once again able to play CDs and regular DVDs. However, I do not want to risk trying to play the Blu-ray again.
So, what's going on here? HP advertised this computer as having a Blu-ray DVD player. Wasn't HP responsible for providing software that could play Blu-ray DVDs? And why is the Blu-ray DVD, sometimes detected, and sometimes not detected, by playing software? Is there some kind of hardware issue?
Who is responsible for the fact that my computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs? HP, for bad playing software and/or bad hardware? Or is there something in the Windows 7 operating system that prevents the playing of Blu-ray DVDs? Is Microsoft responsible?
    Thanks for any information.

You're not going to get any help from HP or Microsoft on a 4 year old computer.   Maybe your optical drive is no longer able to play Bluray discs.  Windows 7 Media Center with Bluray playback was not included in all versions of Windows 7.  Each computer with Bluray has an individual license; yours may have expired after not using it for 4 years.  Best advice - don't flog a dead horse.  Just get regular DVDs.

  • MediaSmart DVD and Blu Rays

Hi.  I know this question has been asked before (because I've read it in a bunch of other posts) but I'm still having a problem.
My Blu Ray player was working just fine (I just watched UP about a month ago) until I bought the new Harry Potter movie.  When I put it in the player, everything went to hell.  It says "content is protected" and something about not being able to play in this display type.  And now my other Blu Rays won't play either
So - I've already gone through the basics....I've used Revo Uninstaller to completely remove the old version of MediaSmart DVD.  I've downloaded several different versions of MediaSmart and installed them (while being sure to restart a hundred times in between installations and making sure I've completely removed the old ones)  I've turned off Norton 360 and Windows Firewall while installing them.  And still none of my Blu Rays will play.
Please please help me.  I have a HP Pavillion DV7 3065DX running Windows 7.  I don't do anything too fancy on the computer except play on the internet and use Itunes (and watch movies....well....used to)  If you can fix this, I will name my second child after you....

That sucks, but at least your itunes are back. I don't have anything else, sorry. Except Nuke and Pave.
Do a system restore and use David's method to install the latest Media Smart.
After that it should work, start installing your programs in one at a time to see what is interfering with the Blu-ray player.
You could also try installing a trial version of Cyberlinks Power DVD 11 before doing a system restore, but unfortunately that's not free.
Personally I have had problems with Media Smart too, and I do have Power DVD 8. I will eventually update to Power 11.
The frustrating thing about this is that my Media Smart plays Harry Potter, something is blocking the playback of Blu-ray's and it's like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.
The people who manufacture the format do there very best to put all sorts of copy protection protocols on the disc's. I found it gets to the point where the things won't even play. Finding what is interfering is a big challenge.
The other thing that would probably work too is running SlySoft's Any DVD HD, that removes all the copy protection stuff, and that's not free either, but it does work.
     http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html
It's not HP really. Others like Sony, Acer, Toshiba etc are all in the same boat.
Check this thread out, it doesn't look good for lessien either.
     http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/DV7-3165dx-will-not-play-blu-ray/m-p/698379#...
His drive letters are all screwed up, but when I duplicated his situation, my player still worked. Windows doesn't even see the Blu-ray drive at all in his case.
     +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Pending on an answer I am waiting for there may be a newer driver direct from AMD that may work, it's dated 2011, where as the one from HP is from 2009.
There is a good chance that this will solve your problem, but I want to be sure that it will work.

  • DVD drive does not play blu-ray

I am wondering if anyone can help me. I have been trying for the last several days to get my DVD drive to read blu-ray's. It is an HP DV-7 1038ca and there is a Blu-Ray symbol on the drive. When I put a BD in the drive, it cannot read it at all and says there is no disc in the drive. It plays regular movies and I have never had any problems with it.
I have taken some of the earlier suggestions to people with similar problems. I tried Matz_Run.dvd.exe and it told me I had a problem. It said I can read HD-ROM but it would not recognize the disc in the drive. I dried some Cyberlink software to detect BD and BD-3D technology (I forget what it was called) and it said that everything except "software" was functioning. I have loaded the latest HP Quickplay and that did not work. Then I saw that Mediasmart's latest version was actually the replacement. I downloaded Mediasmart from the HP website (as I did not have it before this), then I installed it and upgraded it to the latest edition directly within the software. My computer still refuses to acknowledge there is a disc in the drive when I put an HD disc in. The discs I am trying to read is a 4-part series from BBC vvideo called PLANET EARTH. I have no other BluRay discs currently at my disposal. I even tried changing the country code just in case and this did not work.
Then I tried Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II as this also seems to have BD capability, but same thing, total failure. With the Cyberlink detection program, I get the idea that it works, but perhaps it does not. Is it possible that my BD laser is malfunctioning? Is there any way to check? Or perhaps the issue is something else (other than frustrating). I am running Windows 7 Home 64-bit. I am using MS Security Essentials for protection and Spybot S&D. I cannot think of any other specs to give you at this time, so feel free to ask if I left something out.
    Please help.

    Hi,
Does the drive still recognise and play DVDs and CDs?  If so, I'm afraid it does look like this may be a hardware issue with the BD laser.
One further thing to try is to open the drive and carefully clean both lenses and check again, but if this doesn't help, you may want to start considering replacing the Drive.

Yeah if you do not have a Blu-Ray drive....no Blu-Ray but the spec page for your model says they all have at least a Blu-Ray reader.

  • Premiere elements 11 does not recognize blu ray burner

Purchased Pawtec external blu ray burner. Premiere elements 11 recognizes it as a dvd burner but not a blu ray burner. How can I fix this?

    Long160
There is no burn to folder for Blu-ray in Premiere Elements (any version), so we cannot use that escape route. What has been used in the past as a workaround for this "no burn to folder for Blu-ray" is creating a Blu-ray disc image with Premiere Elements in conjunction with a virtual Blu-ray burner with a virtual BD-RE disc. I have written about that in the following blog post
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/11/pe12-disc-imagephantom-burner-pe.html
But, as for the Pawtec external Blu-ray burner being recognized in the Premiere Elements 11 burner location in burn to Blu-ray,
    a. you may just have an external Blu-ray burner that is not compatible with Premiere Elements
    b. you could try for a Premiere Elements 11 uninstall/reinstall going the route of Deactivation with in the program (Help Menu/Deactivate), uninstall via regular Control Panel route, ccleaner run through (https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner), reinstall.
Have you tried another USB port? Does the Blu-ray burner require one or two USB connections to have enough power for functioning?
Also, do you have all you operating system updates?
    More later.

  • Windows 8 media center does not see blu ray

G'day  - Setup is a BDP-3100, a laptop w/ Windows8.1, a Synology server and a panasonic TV.   All are DLNA.  The blu-ray can see the laptop as a DLNA server and the laptop can see the Blu Ray is on the home group Windows Media play can see the Synology server and the TV; it does not list the Blu-Ray  MY GOAL:  I no longer own a CD-ROM. Trying to copy photos off of a CD using the Blu-ray.   Oh, and actually playing Blu-rays on the laptop would be nice.  What am I missing?

Hello twalsh99, thank you for your message. Welcome to SONY Community!
Unable to play, stream, or throw media content using the DLNA feature
    IMPORTANT:
Make sure that the Internet video device is connected to an active Internet connection.
Make sure that the latest system software update has been performed on the Internet video device.
The words play, stream, or throw are used to describe sending media over a DLNA® network from one device to another. Use this solution if you have set-up your DLNA Certified® devices according to the instruction manual or help file of each device and you are still experiencing difficulty getting your DLNA network to function.
    1. Is the Media Server, Media Server Software and Client Device all DLNA Certified?
If the answer is Yes go to Step 2.
If the answer is No replace the device with a DLNA Certified device.
NOTE: Not all products are DLNA Certified devices guaranteed to work in every DLNA network.
Are the Media Server and Client Device on the same network? If they are on the same network, the Client Device will be able to see the Media Server as in the following example:
NOTE: You can also do the same check from the Media Server file sharing application. Refer to the supplied operations guide or help files for information on how to check and see if the Client device is listed in the screen.
If the answer is Yes go to Step 3.
If the answer is No follow the sub-steps below:
    1. Confirm that the devices are connected to the same network. This can be done by doing an IPCONFIG check using a computer. In locations where there are several different Wi-Fi networks close to each other, one device could actually connected to different network.
    2. Make sure that the Firewall settings on the router are not preventing the Media Server from seeing the client device. Refer to the instructions supplied with the Router or contact your Internet service provider for assistance.
    3. Reset the router.
    4. If the router has the UPnP setting turned On, try turning it Off and reboot the router.
    5. If the router has the IGMP snooping setting turned On, try turning it Off and reboot the router.
Can the Client Device see the Media Server?
If the answer is Yes, go to Step 5.
If the answer is No try the following:
    1. Refresh the Internet services feature on the client device.
    2. Verify that the maximum number of servers on the Client device has not been met. If the number has been exceeded remove other Media Servers. Refer to the manual supplied with the Client device for further information.
    3. Run the Network Diagnostic or Troubleshooting feature of the Client Device.
    4. Power cycle the Client Device, the Router and the Media server by turning each one off and then removing the power cord for 1 minute.
NOTE: Always refresh or rescan the Client Device to search for media servers after making any of the changes listed above.
    4. Can the Media Server see the Client Device?
If the answer is Yes, go to Step 5.
If the answer is No try the following:
    1. Check the firewall settings on the routerto make sure that it is not preventing the Media Server from seeing the Client Device.
    2. Make sure the Client Device was set-up correctly.
    3. If using a wireless connection, make sure that the Internet signal is not being interrupted or lost. Refer to the manual or help files for the Internet speed requirements.
NOTE: A Wired connection is recommended to reduce interference or loss in speed.
    5. Can you see the file you want to play from the Client Device?
If the answer is Yes, go to Step 6.
If the answer is No try the following:
    1. Confirm all necessary settings are enabled on your Media Service Device. The following solutions will provide assistance when using a Windows 7 PC:
How to set up and troubleshoot a home network.
How to set up a DLNA server.
If the Client Device being used is a computer, try temporarily disabling firewall and virus protection Through the firewall or Security Suite application. Some firewall and virus scanners can control the access of the computer input and output.
    6. The media file is listed on the play list but will not play.
Download the sample files to the Media Server and confirm that it plays.
NOTE: If the device is able to play one of these files, then the media file being used may not be formatted in a manner that is supported by the Client device. DLNA supports specific file formats or profiles. Media files that do not match the profiles are not supported.
If you are still experiencing problems, we also suggest trying another Media Server software such as Serviio, Skifta, Twonky. Or another Media Server and repeat the set-up process.
The third-party software recomended above are provided for your convenience and should be used at your own risk. Sony does not support nor guarantee the reliability of unsupplied 3rd party software.

  • W500 Blu-Ray Mat**bleep**a BD-MLT UJ232A will not recognize Blu-Ray DVD movie

Recently purchased W500 4061- W6U with Mat$hita BD-MLT UJ232A optical drive at Firmware level "TC02" will not recognize a brand new Blu-Ray DVD.  But will recognize and play a normal (non-Blu-Ray) DVD.  The system sees the Blu-Ray optical drive and shows it is working normally.  I attended to update the firmware, but the Lenovo Optical Disc Drive Firmware Update 1.6 utility, states the firmware is already at the current level and under the header New Firmware states "None".  Any ideas?  Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It has nothing to do with the drive.
Blu-ray movies are encrypted using keys. Hackers break the keys. So new Blu-ray movies then come out using new keys. WinDVD (your Blu-ray playing software) contains the keys, and needs to be updated. So see if there's a WinDVD update available from Lenovo's site. If not, then you'll have to pester Lenovo to get a new update from Corel. You can't get the update from Corel yourself.
Or you can simply buy a better Blu-ray player program, such as Cyberlink PowerDVD.
    Good luck!

Hi, I have more or less exactly the same problem.
I own a pavilion dv7 1090eb, which originally had Vista 32bit on it, but I updated to Windows 7 32bit more than a year ago,
not long after 7 was released. Ever since that update (or a few days after, I don't really remember) I've been having problems with the quick launch buttons.
For over a year it was just my mute button that was always orange. I could still mute my sound, but when not muted, it sounded like it was really filtered, all the low and the high were gone, only low mid sounds remained.
My jack exits, both of them, however, still work fine, and I have good audio through external speakers, so I kind of solved that.
But still, the laptop itself has great sound, so I should be able to get that without having to carry around external speakers wherever I go.
Oh and I used to have the same problem with Vista from time to time, but after rebooting it would just go back to normal.
But now just today, I left my laptop on for about 2 hours for some image rendering while I was away, and I switched the wifi off, which I usually do when I leave my laptop unattended. But when I came back, it wouldn't turn back on again, and none of the quick launch buttons worked anymore.
I tried reinstalling all drivers after I did some troubleshooting options which didn't work.
Turned it off and on again a couple of times.
Then found this thread and installed the above link, rebooted, still doesn't work.
What now? What can I do to resolve this problem?
I really hope I can get a solution for this.

  • How to read Blu-Ray disk from Encore

I shot footage in 1080i on a Sony HDR-HC7 camcorder. I edited it in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 V3.2.0 (374) running on XP home edition. I then created an Adobe Encore project (Encore CS3 V3.0.1.008). From Encore I burned 2 standard DVD's, one on the DVD burner & the other on my Blu-Ray burner (LG GGW-H20L, firmware YL05)). Both disks played perfectly on my Sony Blu-Ray player ( Sony BDP-S300).
From the same project I then burned a Blu-Ray disk using Verbatim BD-RE (2X) on the same LG drive. When I attempted to play this disk on the same Sony player I got the message 'Can't play'. I repeated the above process several times & each time I produced a Blu-Ray disk that can't be read.
Can anybody tell me how I can resolve this problem?

Many thanks! Updating the firmware on the Sony player did the trick (V2.1 to
V4.5). The earlier version could not read BD-R(E).

    Hello rmcunha,

There is not a HP repair center that you can take it to, but you can take to one of the big box stores, Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples.
