HP Pavilion dv9700

I upgraded Windows 8.1  a while back from Vista.  Today, my computer locked up and shut down. I turned it on and the monitor had some weird stuff then it went gradually to black. How can I access my hard drive. I used to be able to with my wireless network, but with no monitor, I can't seem to log in.
I have an ethernet cable.
Any ideas?

Hi @JosieJake
If you are just looking to access the contents of your hard drive, it is possible, depending on what you have available.
Please see this page which shows some ways to access data on a drive:

  • USB 3.0 Upgrade for HP Pavilion dv9700 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC

Is it possible to upgrade my HP Pavilion dv9700 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC to USB 3.0?  I've been searching the website and google and haven't found any concrete answers just yet.  I'd rather not have to buy a new laptop just to get USB 3.0.  It's been the most reliable pc I've ever had and I don't wantn to replace it!
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi,
You have to buy a new laptop or swap the system/motherboard or buy an Express card - USB 3 (I've got one) or PC card - USB 3. For desktop , this is much simpler, a PCI - USB 3 card will do.
    Regards.

  • Pavilion dv9700 DVD/CD ROM stopped working: Code 10 (This device cannot start.)

I have a HP Pavilion dv9700 running Windows 7 where the DV)D/CD ROM drive fails to be detected. I can still get it to open and close. The device manager gives an error: Code 10 (This device cannot start). I read somewhere that iTunes upgrades can cause DVD problems in HPs, and I did upgrade iTunes a couple of days ago. I did upgrade the BIOS a few moments ago, but it didn't help. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Thank you for the responses! Sorry it took me so long to implement--I wanted to back everything up first before messing with the registry. Following the instructions to delete lines in the registry AND uninstalling iTunes allowed for the DVD/CD ROM to pop up with an exclamation mark in my Device Manager. Updating the driver did not help as the computer said the driver was up-to-date. Mysteriously, when I rebooted, the DVD/CD ROM disappeared from the device manager again. I forgot to mention in the initial post that the DVD/CD ROM light blinks steadily at about two blinks/second. Any other ideas? I am wondering if this is a hardware failure now.

  • Disc drive no longer working on HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC?

I have a HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC that's running Windows Vista Home Premium.  This morning I inserted a CDR to burn some files via iTunes and since then, my disc drive is not responding in anyway.  I tried pushing the button on the disc drive, no response.  I tried ejecting it via windows explorer, no response.  I tried restarting my computer to see if that would help, no response.  The light on the disc drive no longer lights up in anyway.  When I tried burning the CDR in iTunes, it just kept displaying the message "Please insert blank disc" over and over and didn't recognize there was anything in the drive.  So, do you think the disc drive has had it?  Or is there some way to reset the disc drive or fix it?  Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

  • No OS Found on HP Pavilion dv9700 issue....

Hello, I'm having an issue...but first here are the specs:
    HP Pavilion dv9700 (2008)
    Vista OS
    Error: No OS Found
No changes, has been having trouble for a few months, have done a recovery twice, it gets hot, which I understand is an issue with this model. My husband was working a Word doc and he backspaced to correct an error, got the 'thinking' spinning icon for a long time, then it just shut down.
The cd drive hasn't worked in a long time so no way to backup or create a recovery disc or even install one if I had one.
    What I've done:
nothing but the F10 System Setup works on startup
entered Setup, ran diagnostics: Diagnostics not supported, No IDE device
entered BIOS: changed boot order thinking that the cd drive was causing Boot issues, nothing changed.
    did a hard re-set: nothing
removed hard drive and re-seated it, nothing.
So, at this point I'm thinking it's the hard drive. Here are my questions:
Will I need to reload a OS?
If so, how, given the cd drive doesn't work?
There is a space for a second hard drive, if I put the new drive in that space, any chance I can recover anything from the first drive?
Is it even worth replacing the hard drive?
    Anything I'm not thinking of?
    Thanks so much,
    Jean

I understand that your system does not boot and states there is no OS found.
First, verify that all USB devices are disconnected if any are.  This can trigger that message.
Verify the missing HDD message by using HP's diagnostics instead.  This should be accessible by turning the system on and pressing F2 about once a second.
It does appear that the HDD has failed based on the symptoms, but you could also try reseating the HDD.
If it has failed, a new HDD will be blank.  You will need the HP recovery disks to reinstall Windows.  I take it you had not made the recovery disks from the system when you first got it since you did check for their availability.  To be absolutely certain they are not available, I would contact HP to verify their status.  The HDD will need to be at least the same capacity or higher for the recovery disks to work in most cases.
If the HDD has not failed completely, you might be able to connect it to a different system as a second drive to browse and copy files.  You might need a USB HDD converter kit to accomplish this.  For me, I just connected a failed HDD using the SATA connections and left the HDD sitting loose in the HDD bay;however, this isn't a best practice.
The recovery disks made from a different system will not work on another system as they are tied to the original system.  You would get a message about them not being for that system.

  • Cd/dvd wont read on HP Pavilion dv9700 notebook

HP Pavilion dv9700 entertainment notebook PC won't read any cd or dvd in the drive, but it does spin. PC is running Windows Vista Home Premium SP 2. It does not given an error message. It just stopped working and it is no longer under warranty. Can anyone help get it going?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • No Sound device on HP Pavilion dv9700

Hello, I am checking out a notebook computer for a friend...
He sent to a technician because his hard drive had crashed, don't know why he didn't send it to me in the first place.
The tech replaced it and installed Windows 7 32bit, but there was no sound, no webcam and the DVD drive was not visible in the OS. I tried to install the 32bit audio vista drivers from HP's website (tried both Conexant and Realtek, and the older ones also) but it kept giving me the error: "Driver installation failed: Could not find the device for this driver"
Since the computer had 4GB of memory, I reinstalled it with Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 64bit.
The reason for Vista is because I know I had experiences in the past where these machines are sensitive when it comes to drivers, especially the audio.
But I kept getting the same error, you do not even see the devices in the device manager.
I also installed the Microsoft UAA...
I still cannot see the DVD drive (you can eject the drive manually using the hardware button)
Also the webcam is also not recognized...
I even tried a hard reset (removed battery, held the power button for 30 secs.)
Now the the last tech. who checked the machine seemed to have opened it up, for what reason I do not know because the hard disks are accessibly in the back through a small panel.
    Anyone has any ideas?
    Here is the system details:

  • "Transplanting" a hard disk of Pavilion dv9700-dv9808eg to a dv 9850es

There are many different submodels of the HP Pavilion dv9700 series (17" laptop). Mine is a dv9850es submodel but the video chip died from overheating. Repair is expensive but I found a 2nd hand dv9805eg model that has pretty much the same specifications, except that the hard drive has 200Gb whils mine has a 320 Gb one. I thought I could buy it and replace the hard drive by my origional hard drive and hopefully have cloned my old computer. This would save me a lotof time installing software etc andI would have a higher capacity drive. My question is ifit will work wothout hassles. What about the BIOS and hardware drivers for example?

    Hi:
Looking at the specs, it looks like it would boot right up.
The BIOS should have no effect on the hard drive.
You may be in a very dark gray area regarding the legality of what you want to do with regard to transferring a hard drive from one PC to another with a MS OEM operating system where the licensing specifically states that you cannot move an OEM OS from one PC to another--even if it is Vista Home to Vista Home.
    http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/licensing/sblicensing/pages/licensing_faq.aspx#fbid=dKsxhMSaz-L
    Q. My customer bought a new PC and wants to move the OEM software from the old PC to the new one. Can't users do whatever they want with their software?
    A. No, the OEM software is licensed with the computer system on which it was originally installed and is tied to that original machine. OEM licenses are single-use licenses that cannot be installed on more than one computer system, even if the original machine is no longer in use. The End User Software License Terms, which the end user must accept before using the software, state that the license may not be shared, transferred to, or used concurrently on different computers. System builders must provide end-user support for the Windows license on computers they build, but cannot support licenses on computers they didn’t build. This is a fundamental reason why OEM System Builder licenses can't be transferred.

  • HP Pavilion dv9700 CD/DVD ROM not found in BIOS or device manager

HP Pavilion dv9715nr entertainment notebook PC.
Originally running Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit OS.
Computer recently began running very slowly/freezing/hanging during normal use.
To combat freezing/hanging, mistakenly performed system restore instead of simple recovery.
    After system restore:
    CD/DVD player did not work.
CD/DVD player no longer listed in Device Manager.
CD/DVD player listed in BIOS as ATAPI/CD/DVD ROM Drive, not as TS-L632 as installed.
Updated all available drivers from HP website, including:
    Vista Home Premium SP2
    Phoenix BIOS to version F34(?)
CD/DVD player still not listed in device manager.
CD/DVD player still does not work.
Removed CD/DVD player from laptop and re-installed, hoping to reseat it. Failed.
    Tried Mr. Fix-It. Failed.
Followed every similar thread, tried all fixes listed in this forum. Failed.
During boot-up, CD/DVD player makes two (2) distinct "bumps" as if loading or trying to spin.
Any help in getting the CD/DVD player reinstalled and operating will be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Internal microphone in Pavilion dv9700 ?

My control panel the sound device states the microphone is not plugged in.  Is there an internal mike? If so how to turn on? or do I need an external mike?

I'm running into a similar issue. I have Pavilion dv6000 and I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and my internal mic isn't working either. I have downloaded the most recent driver from Realtek and still no luck. The system shows it is working correctly, however when i test by recording using accessories recorder and skype - i get a message stating the computer cannot hear me. first I heard static  when using the mic now after updating driver, no static, but still no mic.
I have been unable to figure out what is wrong. HP doesn't offer support for Windows 7 for my system. Do I really need to downgrade back to Vista to get  my mic back?
I've seen there are many others who have the same problem - and i've tried several of the fixes, checked device manager and made sure settings are correct. This worked beautifully before the upgrade now, pc is faster, but mic is out of order.
any assistance for what seems to be a common problem after upgrade would be appreciated.
