HP Pavilion Elite e9240f won't boot -- beep codes

When I try to boot my hp desktop I am getting beep codes.  As best I can tell it's one long then 8 short.
I have not replaced or changed any hardware or software.
I have used compressed air to blow out all the fans I saw.
It's been an intermittent error that I thought was related to heat.  I'd turn it off, let it sit for the night, and it would work in the morning.
The last time it worked, I was wondering about a virus so I ran an avast full system scan.  It found one file in the 1 tb drive (sorry, don't remember name, just that it was a .tmp file) and it said to move it to chest I believe so I did that.  It then suggested doing a boot scan so it restarted and has since given the same beep code errors.
I have unattached the cables for the cd and dvd drives, as well as the hard drive, and I still get the error.  I've removed the video card and still get the error.  I've held the power button down so that the led light inside the computer shuts down.  I seem to get fans to run but nothing else.
I made a system repair disk from another Windows 7 Professional (which I think this one is) and that won't work (I can't seem to boot into that) because it doesn't seem to get to an HP screen to boot into the cd.
Thoughts?
Thank you

Hi,
This is the HP troubleshooting link for POST error codes.
You could try reseating memory modules or removing one at a time and testing for a successful POST.

  • Dx2400 Microtower Won't Boot - Beep Codes

    Hi all,
One of my users has a dx2400 microtower.  Yesterday, according to her, it just stopped working.  Upon visiting this morning, I find that when powering on, nothing is displayed on the monitor, the green light on the power button is solid, the LAN LED is solid green, and there is a beep code.
    Beep, Beep, Beep, *Pause*, Beep.
It all just sits there doing nothing.  I reseated the RAM to no avail, and at this point, don't know what's wrong.  I tried to find a guide to tell me what the beep code means, but was unsuccessful.  Help!  Thanks!

  • HP Pavilion Elite m9258 will not boot up. Won't recognise USB ports -mouse keys etc

    HP Pavilion Elite M9258
70 percent of the time will not boot up.
Computet light is on. DVD drive will open and shut. Fans sound slightly quieter when this happens.
The monitor comes on but the light goes to  orange. When I press any of the monitor buttons, it flashes a message for a few seconds telling me it is in sleep mode and invites me to move the mouse or press a key to continue
The problem is that the USB ports are not recognised by the computer at this point. The infra red mouse light flashes briefly when the computer is switched on then goes and remains off. The keyboard is also unresponsive.
The sole fix that  I can find is to repeatedly turn the computer off and on again. After 70 -100 attempts ( over 4 to 6 hours) it suddenly boots up normally. The problem began a year ago and is increasing in duration and severity.

I am having the same problem as Avro500! My computer is the hp pavillon desktop model a6863w. The computer freezes then the keyboard and mouse will not respond and the only thing I can do is shut it down and even then I have to hold the pwer button about 10 sec before it shuts off! I have unplugged all external devices like you told avro500 to do and I did finally get it started but the computer still freezes and it is doing it more often as time goes by! I even paid HP support the $100 dollars (or around that amount) to fix it but it keep happening even after they worked on it but it was after the 7 days or what ever their policy is! They downloaded some security suites and ran their scans! They left Advanced system care, ccleaner and superantispyware on my computer and I was just wondering if they could be conflicting with my paid norton internet security? I have become very flustrated because first off I paid a lot of money for this computer and it's not even 2 years old yet and I also have paid HP a lot of money to fix it and all the guy from India could say to me was "I have been working on this computer and it hasn't froze up so the problem must be fixed!" Well it's not!! and I don't know enough to fix it myself so thats why I paid you a hundred dollars to do it for me! haha thanks for any help!

  • HP Pavilion p7-1414 Won't Boot from CD

    Hello,
I recently bought an HP Pavilion p7 1414 desktop computer, I'm trying to boot from a CD to reinstall Windows 8 - I've set the CD to boot first in BIOS, but when I restart the computer and have the CD in, 'press any key to boot from cd' isn't showing.  It just boots straight to the computer's HDD into Windows to log in.
I have Windows 8 64 bit. 6 GB of RAM and a terabyte of HDD space.  I'm just looking to reinstall Windows 8 for a fresh start.  Any ideas why it won't boot from the CD?
    Greatly appreciate it!

    Hi..
Try to save the settings in BIOS before you exit it.
Force boot the pc to the dvd drive.
Keep the disc in and restart the pc.
Also check the functionalty of the dvd drive >> check if other disc are working on the drive.
Check if the discs work on any other  pc.

  • Hp pavilion elite m9340 will not boot from hd or cd. i get error code biohd-3.

Like title says, box won't boot from HD nor from recovery disk, OS- Windows7. BIOS and system diagnostics recognize both drives. I opened the box and unplugged HD SATA cable and was able to boot it from recovery disk. It seems as though something is wrong with HD that won't let system boot correctly. Any help is greatly appreciated. Mike.

    Hi,
The error code that you are getting normally indicates a bad hard drive. Be sure that the power connector for the hard drive is on tight.  Plug the HD into a different SATA port and see if the same issue occurs. If it does, then you have a bad hard drive.  You might need to hit the ESC key at the HP splash screen to pick the boot device since you moved the cable if you get that far.
A new 3.5" SATA hard drive under 2 TB should work just fine.

  • BRAND NEW MSI x99s Gaming 7 Won't Boot, Debug Code 00

Just completed my build and my pc won't boot. Everything plugged directly into the psu is working but fans plugged into mother board don't spin and getting debug code 00 nothing displayed on screen.

    Hmm ok.
What you could do is: try each stick on its own, in every single DIMM slot. Make note which slots/sticks work or dont work. Then add to 1 (known to work) RAM stick and try moving this single one around all DIMMs again. Do the same until you get a failure or if works fine.
Which slots did you use by the way?

  • Pavilion p6510f desktop won't boot

When I turn on the computer and the monitor, the monitor displays the usual message that I need to activate the monitor via the computer. Unfortunately that's as far as I can get. I have no lights on the USB keyboard or optical mouse, and neither of them works. There is no cursor on the screen. Eventually the monitor goes to sleep. When I reboot the computer there is no beep. The light behind the HD is glowing steady green. I have tried doing a hard reset, as described in HP's troubleshooting overview. I hear the fans power up, and possibly a whir or two from the HD. I have opened the case, and tried removing/reseating the memory modules. I even followed the advice someone posteon this board, to try booting with only 1 of the modules, then the other, to see if that wold permit booting. On separate attempts I have tried repeatedly hitting F8, F2 and who remembers what other Fs. I did what I could to research this on the HP site, and some others. I tried popping in my System Restore disc, and I think I heard the HD spinning a bit on booting, nothing more happened.  When I boot up with the external HD plugged in,the lights on the HD are fine. For the last few months I had been having problems with the computer freezing from time to time in hibernate mode -- there was no way to get it to wake up using the keyboard or mouse, so a few times I had no choice but to turn off the computer by pressing the power button.. This started when it was still in warranty, and at one point I did speak to customer service about it. I've been out of warranty about a month now. The other evening after not using the computer for a while, we came back to find a message box saying that in order to come out of hibernate mode we would need to use the keyboard, which we did, and everything seemed normal. (This is what was described to me, I was not home to witness it myself.) But the next morning it wouldn't wake up at all. I may have left out some of the things I read about or tried. I can't count the number of times I tried rebooting. Should I bring it in to my guy and pray he can fix it? Or is there something else I can try? I'm not up to dismantling the innards myself, beyond the simplest things. It has Win 7, 64-bit.

Expert Anthony 8211,  As of 3 Aug 2015 could you please bring me upto date about the problem with the p6510f model of the HP Pavilion desktop? I bought it about 4 or 5 yrs ago but took it out of the box just a few months ago.  I tried all of the solutions that you and others suggested in the forum.  Did not help.  The product no for my desktop is WW639AA#ABA Windows 7 Home Premium 64-BIT Service pack 1 installed. Runs on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and with Service pack 1 installed.  Has 4 GB RAM.  I'm profoundly ignorant of PC hard and soft ware.   The PC is working though despite the power on or off indicator problem. Normally when the PC is to be powered on after having been shut down, the clear plastic rectangular button on the top of the tower is gently pressed down once and the light within it, it would turn  blue and if there is no activity for a while the light would become orange (indicating sleep status) and again gently pushing down  that button would restore the blue light indicating that the power to the PC is fully back up.   Pressing that on/off button does not indicate if the power is on or not since it does not get lighted blue or orane.  A very small light at the top of the front face of the tower flickering orange is the only indication that the PC is powered and as it happens, its working.  Opinions on the forum for this specific problem for this particualr model p6510f suggest taking out and reinstalling memory modules and /or disconnect the monitor, ethernet cable from the router that is off , the wired mouse etc after shutting down and then go with unplugging the power cord at the back, press the button just once, wait 10 seconds before re plugging in the power cord.  Your opinion and methodology to solve this problem would be much appreciated assuming that you would go to the forum and check out this subject though its been 4 years since it was last posted.   Thus my query may never reach you given that this HP Pavilion   Thkg you N_Yorker2015   Small PC repair businesses are fast disappearing in NYC's Manhattan.

  • HP Pavilion Elite E9240F randomly becomes unresponsive.

    Hello,
I've had this computer for only about 1 or 2 years and it recently started to have this unresponsiveness problem. I'm able to move around my mouse and if I'm talking to people on Teamspeak or Skype I'm able to still talk to them but I can't open or close anything. There are no hardware changes but I noticed it started to happen when I updated my graphics card from Steam. Also it's random, I can be doing nothing and if I try to open Google Chrome it won't open until the computer becomes responsive again. I really need help!
Thank you for your time and I hope this can be resolved!

    Hi..
This could be due to the incompatibility of your desktop and the graphics card.
Check out for the motherboard specs and the graphics card if they are compatible or no.
Also there is a CODE PURPLE scene in all HP PC's, where if the PC's would lock itself or become slow if the original configuration of the desktop is changed.
Also this could be due the power supply your graphics card is shharing from the motherboard.
If the motherboard does not support the graphics card the PC would work slow because your graphics card is exceeding the power capacity.
Also this could be due to the high usage of the PC. You can increase the system processing memory (RAMs), and the PC would get some more memory to divide the work on.

  • HP Pavilion DV7 1120eo doesn't boot (Error Code 1 / CPU)

    Hi,
    I have a DV7 that doesn't want to boot.
When I try to boot it up, the screen just stays black and the caps lock indicator blinks one time between each "pause", which should be an error code for broken CPU(?!).
I asked the HP Support team on Twitter how reliable the error codes are, and according to them they should be reliable.
So I repleaced the CPU with another one, but still the error code shows when I try to boot.
I'm just wondering if you may know what could be wrong? Could the CPU socket itself be broken?
I found a long hair laying in between the CPU and CPU socket, but I reckon that it can't be the problem, or else something would've gone wrong like 3 years ago - since it must have been there since the computer was manufactured.
Anyway, I hope I can get some clarity or advice on things to try out.
    Best Regards
    Alexander

Baking in the oven can work but it is a crude, temporary fix. Unless you have access to high tech diagnostic and repair tools, a bad motherboard is a bad motherboard and is a "replace only" item. There are services on the internet where shops with the tools will fix your motherboard and the cost is very reasonable if you can remove the motherboard yourself and just ship that, instead of the whole computer. We are talking in the range of $60US. Even if you have to send the board to the US, the cost is very competitive with a replacement board.  Here is a replacement board on eBay that ships worldwide from China:

First thing to try is a hard reset. Remove the battery and power supply. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Wait another 30 seconds. Now plug in the power supply. Then try to start the computer. Let us know if that works. If not, we need to start thinking about hardware issues.
