HP Pavilion p7-1221 Desktop PC only boots with 1 ram stick in after bios update

Hello, I updated my BIOS because it was suggested by HP support.  My PC did not want to start afer that.  I did some reasearch and tried several things, like unplugging the power supply and taking out the CMOS battery.  I even referenced the beeping codes.  I narrowed it down to memory problems, "I think".  I took on out the sticks and made sure they were okay, placed them back and it booted.  The I shut it down and it would not boot again.  I took out one stick and it booted.  It's been several weeks now and I have to take out 1 stick and boot, turn power off and add the other stick and it boots.  What could be the problem?  I read it might be that the setting in the BIOS might be different somehow.  Perhaps HP overclocked my RAM or voltages issues.  I don't know.    Can anyone help me please? I'm not too computer literate so I would need someone to walk me through changing the settings in BIOS.

Hi,
These are the bios settings for your PC. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03383166&lc=en&product=5272748&tmp...
You might try disabling Secure boot and then reboot a few times to make sure that everything is OK. Then enable Secure Boot again.
There is a chance that the bios update has a problem.  Try reflashing the BIOS or contacting HP Support.
HP's support number is 800-474-6836 or 800-HPINVENT or online here.

  • ESXi6.0 Host, WIndows 7, only boots with 1GB RAM

    Hi gang,
I converted a physical Win7 machine for use on my ESXi 6.0 sever and it created the machine just fine.  I added a second disk to the server and moved the VM files to that disk, removed it from the inventory, and then added it back.  The VM was originally configured to use 4GB RAM.  However, when I power on the machine, the console window stays black and Windows never boots.  With some trial and error, the only way I was able to get the VM to power on and boot was if I changed its settings to only use 1GB RAM.  There is 8GB RAM total in the ESXi host and the other VMs aren't using much, so there is plenty freely available.  However it simply won't boot with more than 1GB configured.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well I deleted the VM and re-created it, and reloaded Windows and all my software, works fine now.
    Thanks for all the help.

  • Boot failure in B50-30 Touch after BIOS update

    Hi,
I bought a B50-30 Touch notebook 2 months ago in the United States.
Just before my visit to India, I updated the BIOS from version 2.04 to 2.07.
Now I am unable to successfully boot into the factory-installed Windows 8.1.
The Lenovo logo appears & the system gets stuck in a restarting loop.
I reset the BIOS to the system default settings, but still failed to boot successfully.
Even using the Novo button for system recovery results in an endless restarting loop.
Kindly let me know if there is any way I can flash the BIOS back to version 2.04 using an USB flash drive.
I have executables of both versions 2.04 & 2.07 of the BIOS update utility:

However it appears that you did not  understand what I said about the Linux Live USB.
I was actually not successful in being able to view any of the partitions or files on the HDD.
Only the folders & files created by the Linux Live USB installation could be seen.
This is worrying as some of the stuff on the HDD needs to to backed up.
So I think it is a risk to proceed further before making sure that the data on the HDD is intact.
Also, another thing I would like to state is that the system (C) partition has nothing of value on it.
All the data that I need to backup is on the D: partition.
So if your instructions risk losing only the contents on the C: partition, then it is fine with me.
I can go ahead & try to repair the installation.
Please clarify this in order for me to proceed further.
As always, thanks a million for your help.
    It is greatly appreciated.
PS I always make sure that I know what I am doing before tinkering with a system.
I understood your reference but I was indicating that the hardware was working, not inferrring the data was readable.  If it came up with no hard disk installed under linux it would have been a different story.  I apologize if this caused confusion.
There is always a chance that data will be lost with any change to partition information, that is why I always suggest making a back up if possible.  If you can not see the data on the partitions, the best way is to use GParted and TestDisk to view the contents of the hard disk with both quick scan and deep scan options.  Using this will not make changes to data, only allow you to see what TestDisk can say is there.  If you look at TestDisk walkthru you can see it does not make changes unless you "write" or commit your changes to the drive.
If TestDisk shows you the partitions information it will include all that are "marked" for deletion or corrupted.  It can give you options to view partition contents (raw data) to verify the proper partition to recover and then make it active.  It can also restore boot sectors as well.
Windows RE will attempt to do this, but if it fails you will have little choice but to initialize the drive and start over.
PS>  I figured you knew to look before leaping, but better not to assume... LOL

  • PowerMac DP G4 Won't Boot With All RAM Sticks Installed

A few weeks ago, my 800 MHz dual-processor G4 started having frequent kernel panics. I tried all sorts of things, including changing the PRAM battery, resetting the firmware, and resetting the PMU. Then, one day, it would only power up but not boot, so I took it in for repairs.
The shop I took it to determined that the logic board was malfunctioning and replaced it. The computer no longer has any kernel panics.
The machine was designed for three 500 MB RAM sticks, which is what it had ever since I bought it over five years ago. Now, apparently, it won't boot with the last one installed, though it will with two. The shop replaced the new logic board and and even swapped RAM, but the problem still persists. Neither the power supply nor the hard drive appear to be malfunctioning.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    G4 800 MHz Dual Processor   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    squeakmaster, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried the following with one 512MB RAM stick:
    1. Palce it in the first RAM slot. Does the Mac boot?
    2. If so, remove the stick & place it in the second RAM slot. Does it boot?
    3. If so, remove the stick & place it in the third RAM slot. Does it boot?
The results of this test should reveal (1) if the stick boots in one or more RAM slots, the RAM is good and (2) if it fails to boot in a RAM slot, there is a problem with that slot.
Do this with each of the tree RAM sticks & post back the results.
When the logic board was replaced, was the firmware updated to be compliant with OS X. (Note - The firmware is installed on a chip on the logic board.) Check your Mac's firmware (Boot ROM version) version. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
Can you boot up in OS 9.x? If so you can use DIMM First Aid - Check & recover disabled (missing) RAM from Apple's latest firmware updates http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/10415

  • G31M3-L V2 won't boot with two RAM sticks

I'm building a computer (first build) and am using an MSI G31M3-L V2 motherboard.
I have 2 x 2GB sticks of G.Skill DDR2-800 (PC6400) RAM, but the motherboard will only boot if I use one. Either stick works, as long as it's in the RAM slot closest to the CPU. If I put a stick in the second RAM slot, the fans spin up and the DVD access light blinks a few times, but the monitor doesn't wake up. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not reboot, and the power button doesn't turn it off, it has to be unplugged (or switched off at the PSU).
I've tried flashing the bios several times and resetting the CMOS jumper, but it still doesn't work. Should RMA it? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

One thing needs to be made clear is that with only 2 memory slots on that MB, single channel is with 1 stick installed and dual channel is with 2 sticks installed, simple as that. There is no BIOS or OS setting to change that.
Well then that doesn't make sense then. If I have two sticks in totaling 4GB installed, it runs very slow. According to this:
    • Due to the limitation of G31 chipsets, dual channel support must meet some requirement in the specification of memory modules. please refer to Test Reports for detailed description.
My system MAY be running in single channel mode.
    BUT
If I take out 1 stick of 2GB totaling 2GB installed, then it runs 20 times faster. Here I am running @ single channel mode. So if the above is true and both configurations are running in single channel mode, why does it run so much slower with 4GB instead of 2GB?

  • T400 won't boot unless more than 50% charge after BIOS update

After updating the BIOS (which, ironically, were supposed to fix this problem I didn't have before), my T400 will not boot unless the machine is either on AC power or the battery has more then ~50% charge left. The bootup sequence will start, the BIOS will post, but just after it gets through the boot loader the machine will just power off. Attempting to boot after this first occurance usually ends in it crashing at BIOS.
The battery light is always green, and after plugging into AC power, the battery shows a significant charge (40% on the lastest crash) once the machine actually boots. Attempting to re-update the BIOS gives a "You already have the newest BIOS" message, and I can't find the old version of the Lenovo website.

Just for future reference, if you click on the red Support tab at the top of this page, then scroll to downloads, then click Driver Matrices, this will give you a list for all the different models.
If you click one, you'll get a complete list of drivers for that model, including older versions of drivers.
You can bookmark those pages, and copy links to those pages.
It's a little easier to find things there, but you should still crosscheck that page with the driver page that you have been using to make sure you have current drivers.  Sometimes updates to driver pages lag a bit.

Blackberry Desktop Software only synchronizes with folder Outlook in Microsoft Outlook.  But, folders (.PST files) may be renamed and there may be multiple such folders open in Outlook at any time.  I have six, none of which is named Outlook.  Two of those are archival and four are associated and named for email addresses. The Desktop software should list the pst files checkboxes to indicate whether synchronization should be performed with them.

Well I believe I have figured out the answer to my own question, I ended up having to do a repair installation for Office 2010 and I was able to sync from outlook to the Blackberry.

Why did you try booting with the R key pressed? From what I recall that key simply resets the screen settings, and shouldn't have anything to do with your system starting or not. I would remove it from the external display until we can get this resolved.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with your NVRAM. Try booting with this key sequence cmd-opt-n-v.

Ensure the computer's RAM is fully seated down, and then try resetting the PRAM by holding down options-command-P-R at boot. The computer will make the boot chimes and then reset and chime again. When it chimes the second time release the keys and let the thing boot normally. Hopefully that will let it recognize the RAM.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • More detail and a reply for the CQ50 - 130US will not boot with 8gb ram post

The specs, on the web site say that the  max memory supported is 3GB DDR2 because the notebook was built with the OS Vista(32 bit) installed so that’s why the manual has the 3 GB max. memory supported limit. The 32 bit OS can’t address memory over 3.12 GB.   To my mind that is not a spec. but rather a tech. writer who made a mistake and copied the sales literature.  With Windows 7(64 bit) Pro. installed the OS can address up to192GB of memory if the system supports it.  Other Compaq and HP Notebooks can deal with 8GB of memory installed. That’s why I would think HP’s could easily fix this with a patch or use one of their other BIOS’s.
The difference between 4GB and 6GB is that with 6GB system runs faster and the display quality has improved.  I have set the cache size to large and the executive paging is set to off in the registry. The menu(System Properties - Performance Options – Advanced – Virtual Memory) is set to automatically manage the paging file size.

You should keep it in the original; thread you started.

  • HP Pavilion P2-1013w Desktop PC - UEFI Install with WIndows 8.1 Pro RTM causes hang

I have an HP Pavilion P2-1013W Desktop PC with the UEFI enabled bios.
With Windows 8.1 Pro RTM Build (MSDN Download available now from Microsoft - Released September 17th 2013 - Again,. this is 8.1, a.k.a. Windows Blue RTM)
SATA Mode is set to AHCI
    BIOS is UEFI Enabled
I boot from the Windows 8.1 Pro USB Installation Media using the UEFI: USB Storage option, Windows Setup starts. I get to the partitions screen, remove the partitions then click New. Windows Setup creates the 4 Partitions (Recovery, MSR, System and Primary) as expected.
When I click Next and Setup begins to copy files, the system locks up. The mouse pointer stops moving, keyboard is unresponsive, and it will sit at 0% for as long as it's left on.
After checking, Microsoft makes a few notes about the requirements. Setup will not run if the OS does not match the UEFI 'bitness'. If this were the issue, I would get a text-mode message about it being the wrong architecture. I don't get that. I get the install wizard, so it is supported.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824898.aspx Has more information.
And I suspect this is a version problem as the original Windows 7 install was a UEFI install, not Legacy. It appears the BIOS firmware I have installed is not compatible with Windows 8.1.
Will an update be made available? Or will I have to revert to WIndows 7 UEFI, and upgrade?

  • Pavilion m9500y wont boot after bios update

    Hello Everyone,
I have a m9500y desktop that I recently did a bios update on. The update seemed to go through just fine but then when it rebooted it ended up beeping a few times and showed only a black screen. I removed the power cord and cmos battery and tried to power on after putting them back. It came back to the boot screen and hitting f10, it says "Entering Setup" and a flashing cursor, but doesn't get passed that. Is there a way to get into some recovery mode and reflash the bios again?
Thank you in advance for any help.

    Hi,
There is one HP BIOS update available for your PC when using Win Vista 64 bit.
Is this the update that has failed? Did you attempt this BIOS update running a different version of Windows?
It may be possible to mod the BIOS update per above and flash again. Another option is to have HP reflash your PC's BIOS. The cost to have HP fix may not be worth it given your PC's introduction date in 2008.
This site may provide some help. Check out BIOS Recovery. Current HP PC's use AMI BIOS. Your PC may have an Award BIOS.
Or you could contact a local PC tech for assistance. The tech may be able to reflash the BIOS at a lower cost.
There is no easy fix for this problem.
