HT1178 Time Capsule and Verizon MiFi?

How do I set up my Time Capsule if the only internet we have is a portable Verizon MiFi?

I believe you cannot. MiFi does not have a USB connection for the external Hartd disc.
You could try to find a wireless Router which has a Lan connection, like this http://www.routeripaddress.com/routers/2012/huawei-d100_default_settings.html

I have Verizon MIFI into our home for internet connection.  How can I use this with the Apple Time Capsule?
Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Check with Verizon for an adapter that would allow the MiFi to connect to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
That is the only way that the Time Capsule can connect.

  • Time Capsule and Verizon FIOS

A few years ago my Actiontec router for Verizon FIOS died and they wanted me to pay for another one. Instead of buying a new Actiontec router I bought a Time Capule. I have had no problems until yesterday. My time capsule had a solid amber color and the amber color did not go away no matter what I did. I took ethernet cable from the Time Capsule and plugged it into my iMac and I no problems accessing the internet.
I should not have  to set up a PPoE connection because I can remove the ethernet cable from the TC and plug it into my mac directly and access the internet with no problems. (I had Verizon DSL some time ago.)
I went out today an bought a new Time Capsule (4th gen). I came home and plugged the ethernet cable to the WAN Port and turned it on. I ran the airport utility and configured it. The TC rebooted and came up with a green light, but I had a problem. I could not access the internet.
Here are some of my settings taken from the airport utility.
    Status: normal
    Version 7.5.2
Wireless Mode: create a wireless mode
Allow this network to be extended.
    Connect Using: ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
IP Address: 169.xxx.xxx.xxx ( a real IP Address)
    subnet mask: 255.255.255.255
    Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
When I look at my network settings when the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my mac, I get these values:
    IP Address: 173.xxx.xxx.xxx
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Router: 173.xxx.xxx.xxx

  • Time Capsule and Verizon's FIOS Service

I subscribe to Verizon and use their router to access the internet. I am considering purchasing Time Capsule, but am not sure how I should configure it with Verizon's Actiontec router or will Time Capsule replace it? I would appreciate any advice.

  • Slingbox, Time Capsule and Verizon router setup

    So here is my setup:
Verizon router with wireless ON.  Time capsule set to share an IP address(not in Bridge mode).  This gives me the double NAT error message.
Sling catcher hooked into the Time capsule on one end and to the Slingbox on the other.
So, I hooked the slingbox up to the verizon router, configured it.  Then hooked the sling catcher to the TM and ran setup again.  Set up port forwarding per the instructions.  Things seem to work fine, although under the slingbox directory it says that I am not set up for internet viewing.
However, i CAN connect via wifi and over 3g on my iphone fine.  With WIFI, I am using my Time capule for wireless not the verizon wifi.  The last time I tried to turn off the verizon wifi i don't think the slingbox worked.  The last time I tried to set up the time capule under bridge mode the slingbox did not work.  If I am in bridge mode there is no option to setup port forwarding.
So I know that my setup is not correct but it is working.  The problem is the speeds.  I have a slingbox pro- getting about 1200-1400 kbs over the internet, and about 500-550 over wifi on the iphone.  I'm getting about 450-550 over 3g on the iphone.  This seems too slow.
    Any suggestions?

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Insure that the setting for Router Mode = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update and allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart
    Very important......
Power off both the Verizon modem/router and the Time Capsule
    Wait a minute or two
Start up the Verizon modem/router first and allow it to run a full minute

  • Verizon FIOS, Time Capsule, and Airport Express - How to Extend Network

OK, I just got Verizon FIOS (TV, Internet, and phone). Don't care for the wireless router that is required to be used with it (want 802.11n and Time Capsule). I turned of the wireless on the Verizon FIOS router and installed a Time Capsule in Bridge Mode, which is how the Verizon rep told me to install it. As I understand it, the Verizon FIOS router is still handling DHCP, NAT, etc. I would like to extend the wireless network to reach some dead spots in my house. I have read that the Airport Express can be used to extend a wireless network from an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule, but it appears that I need to set up a WDS with the Time Capsule as the base station, which is apparently not possible on the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode. I am desperately seeking any advice on how to use Verizon FIOS, my Time Capsule, and extend the wireless network to reach the farther corners of the house. I am using a Macbook and a Thinkpad as well as an iPhone on the wireless network with a Dell desktop connected to the Time Capsule via Ethernet. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Before I switched, I had Cox Cable with a Buffalo wireless router and it had great range. Now I seem to be in a worse situation from a wireless perspective with higher TV and Internet quality. Thanks in advance.

If you have an AirPort Express(n), you can configure it to "extend a wireless network". This is a more efficient way to add additional wireless coverage (and much easier to configure than a WDS arrangement).
However, if you have an older "b/g" AirPort Express, you must use the WDS configuration method with this device and the Time Capsule if you want to increase your wireless coverage.

  • Time Capsule and SLOW bandwidth with Verizon FIOS?????

Ok I have had verizon FIOS and my time capsule for almost 3 years. All running latest firmware updates (which might be the problem with the TC). For the last couple years it has been a blazing fast setup and I have a ps3, imac, macbook pro, apple tv, iphone, ipad, etc all hooked up to my network.
Then 5 days ago I buy a new Imac and the firmware update for the TC. Now the bandwidth in my house has dropped to crap. I have directly connected to the FIOS router with ethernet and its like 20 megs per second down and10 up, but when I connect my time capsule back up and go from there it is like 4 down and 3 up? It was NEVER like this before....any ideas or suggestions?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Things were fine before two changes occurred on your network. So, it might be logical to try to isolate one thing or the other to arrive at a possible cause for your network slowdown.
You need to completely power cycle the entire network after you make any change on a network, whether that be adding a new device (the iMac) or making another change (the firmware update).
Power everything off...modem, routers, computers, consoles, printers, etc., the order is not important. Wait 5 minutes. Then power up your modem first and let it run for 5 minutes by itself. Power up the next device connected to the modem (probably your Time Capsule) the same way. Power up the next device the same way, etc. until everything is powered back up.
    What are your results?
If things are still slow, remove one of the things that you changed on your network...the iMac...by powering it off, restarting your network again (the extended power off above is not necessary) and then checking the network again.
    Any change?
If no change on the iMac test, then the other variable on your network is the firmware update. It's unlikely...+but possible+...that the firmware update changed something in the interaction between your Time Capsule and FIOS router, so something is not functioning quite correctly. Things like this can happen with firmware updates because while Apple knows what works among their own products; they cannot know what works in every instance when another product interfaces with one of of theirs.
It should be possible to rollback the firmware on your Time Capsule to the previous version if you want to try that approach. There's no guarantee of course, that this will help either. Post back if you want to try this.

  • HT1178 reset my time capsule and connect it directly to imac only for back up

I want to reset my time capsule and start a new complte back up ..How to reset it and use it directly connected to may imac?

Your little comment in the profile.. it used to work before Mavericks.. might be better to fix it and use it still as part of your network. The problem is the TC is a purely network device.. It is not at all easy to use stand alone. You cannot connect directly to it by USB. It really has to be part of the network.
I have used them plugged in by ethernet to a computer that connected to the internet by wireless. That is messy to setup but works. I will need some info to do it.
How does the iMac connect to the network.. and what IP does it get??
From that I can give you setup but with due warning, this may still have network issues as those bugs are in Mavericks. And you could save yourself the effort and just try to get it working as part of the existing network.
OR.. IMHO much better solution in this case. For desktop type computer like iMac.. plug in a USB drive.. Or FW800 or even thunderbolt if you have need for real speed. Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2. Price wise.. USB3 is now same price as USB2 so that is the best choice if your Mac has USB3 ports. Thunderbolt is still very expensive. FW800 is better than USB2 but is a dead duck.. Nothing you buy will be useful as the port is being phased out.
But even USB2 will work faster, and be more reliable than a TC.
My other suggestion then is to use CCC or SuperDuper and keep Time Machine as a secondary backup for incrementals. You can produce easily a fully bootable backup drive using CCC. Superduper I heard had issues but that might be fixed now. A bootable backup means if you have a disk failure simply boot the computer from the backup. It is hugely superior method. TM can also continue to be used as it works well for incrementals and restoring applications if that becomes necessary.
Just indicate what you want and we can suggest a way forward or give details on the fix with Time Capsule.

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • Time Capsule and time machine with third party router

    Hi,
This is the first time I use this site.
I have over three years old Mackbook.
    APP has expired.
Now I want to know how to set up time capsule in a new environment.
I moved from Australian and Singapore.
I was using Time Capsule and Airport Extreme in Australia.
    I have moved to Singapore.
I am using router provided by Singtell(Singapore Telecommunication). I do not have an Airport Extreme anymore. My housemate and I are using wireless internet-sharing. Needless to say that internet provider is SingTell.
Now I would like to know how to use time capsule and time machine with the network created with a router provided by SingTell.
    What I did so far is;
Connected the time capsule to the power point.
Orange lamp lit and flashed for a few second and stop. Orange lamp stayed on.
Apple Utility does not recognise Time Capsule.
I prefer to use it wirelessly.
There are only two USB cable ports installed.
One is used to synchronize iPhone.
Other is used for a printer.
but if it is not possible, wired would be OK.
    MacBook 13 inch 2.0 GH Late 2006
I hope that someone able to give me an answer for this.
    Cheers,
    morepubholidays

In this case the apple support people reveal a truly poor understanding.
You must bridge something.. you either bridge the TC.. which 90% of people do.. or you bridge the dsl router.. which some people do manage to do.. You will have to look that up for your modem and check with verizon if they support pppoe authentication.
IMHO just bridge the TC as you were told not to do.. as they are simply wrong about that.
If you already tried this and it didn't work.. try again.. it is the correct approach.
You have no choice. But this time let me suggest you do it using the 5.6 airport utility.. as the apple toyland v6 airport utility is likely half your trouble.
So here is how to get the utility into your computer.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Then open the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.. go to internet tab. Connection sharing.. off bridged mode.
    Select this and update..
Then all your IP addresses will be wrong.. I suspect this is where things are going wrong.. and messing you up.
Once the TC is bridged.. turn off everything and restart.. in correct order.. modem.. TC.. client computers etc. 2min gap between each.

  • Use Time Capsule with Verizon ActionTech AGT784WNV

I have recently begun using verizon DSL with an ActionTech AGT784WNV (supplied by verizon.) If I just connected the two devices I got a double NAT error. Initially I tried setting the ActionTech to bridge mode, but could never find clear instructions for that. As I began following other instructions I found a way to set the Time Capsule to bridge only. First disconnect the WAN cable, then open Airport utility and select the time capsule and choose edit. Then under the network tab there is a dropdown box that allows the time capsule to be configured in bridge only mode. Select that and after the time capsule reboots, connect the ethernet from the ActionTech modem.
So far that seems to provide the wireless network I wanted to maintain.
I am not sure there are any disadvantages.
If I discover some problems I will add to this thread, and I am interested if there are other suggestions.

    That is the correct method.
If the ActionTech has wireless.. from the model number it does.. WNV .. I am guessing is voip and N wireless but I haven't looked it up.
It is wise to set the TC and Actiontech wireless to mesh correctly. Or turn off the ActionTech and only use the TC.. if you want to use both which is a good plan I would physically space them a few feet apart.. so use say a 10' ethernet patch cord. (even better would be to place the TC in another part of the house with poor wireless but connected back by ethernet).
Set roaming network.. basically the same as the Apple instructions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
But in your case.. actiontech is one of the units.
Set same SSID=Wireless Name in TC.
Set same Security.. WPA2 AES = WPA2 Personal
Set same password.. 10-20 characters mix of upper and lower case alphanumerics. (unless you are paranoid)
But they should be on different wireless channels.. if both are set to auto.. it can be confusing .. set one to 11.. the TC say.. and one to 6 or 1.. these are the only non-overlapping channels for 2.4ghz.

  • Time Capsule and External HD as Network Attached Storage

I was wondering if I can
    a. Attached and external hard drive to my Time Capsule and access is wirelessly?
    b. Back up to that external hard drive using Time Machine?
    c. Access that external hard drive and Time Capsule from a remote place off site?
    Thanks

    a. Yes
    b. I think so. But why not just use the TCs hard disk for TM backups?
    c. Apparently so based on these instructions I have found: (Haven't tried it myself)
In the Finder preferences check the box "show server" to mount to desktop.
    Under Airport Utility:
Disks - check over wan and check file sharing and write down the ip address
Under the Finder, use the GO function to find your server ie the hard drive on the TC. In the window provided type afp://ip address then password if applicable. The hard drive should mount and be shown on the desktop.

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.
