HT1199 Newer version of iTunes will not open. My music is gone. How can I get the older version back?

My "newer version" of itunes will not open. How can I either get it to open or get the older version which worked fine?

Restore the backup before you installed.
If you didn't make a backup, at very minimum make sure your Music library isn't compromised by locating the folder you selected the music to be in (usually in Users -> yourname -> Music) and make sure there are several MB of data there by clicking once on the folder, and selecting Get Info from the File menu in the Finder.
If you can't find it, try to locate parts of track names with Find Any File.

then determine which parent file of the .mp3 or .mpa files you have contains all of the music files by getting info under each previous folder in the folder tree.
Once you determine which folder contains all your music, back it up using the Finder, or backup the entire hard drive using cloning software at least to two different drives or two complete copies on DVDs:

You'll then want to erase and install 10.6 from the system installer you used to put 10.6 on your Mac, and run the combo 10.6.8 updater and apply the necessary security updates:

Then you can install older versions of iTunes for the Mac from here, once you determine which version is compatible with 10.6.8 that you liked before by first checking which version is compatible with what you need:

Once you know that, if you can't find it with Google, let us know and maybe one of us can help. Lastly reload your music in your music folder, and your other applications.

What is it that you are having issues with?
Did you know that you can display the same sidebar you were used to seeing on the old iTunes by clicking on "View" at the top, and then clicking on "Show Sidebar"?
The Songs tab provdes your list of songs that can have the same columns you had on the old Music tab, and you can sort them by any of the categories you have selected for columns.
It may just take a little getting used to. Not sure if you noticed, but the downloading of songs and other purchases is now lightening-fast. That particular trade-off is worth learning some new ways of navigating around. And finding that there are ways to bring back the "look" of the old iTunes was also helpful for me.
Are there particular things which are causing you grief?

How can I get the older versions of iWorks ('13 the ones that came with Mavericks) now that I've purchased a new iMac with Yosemite?

It just hit me the other day (when my New Mac was on its way) that it would ship with Yosemite and of course ONLY the newest versions of iWorks. This machine is for a person in our business office and she should not have a different version of Pages and Numbers than everyone else in the company. (we upgrade those apps all together so exchanged files can be opened by everyone). I understand the Migration Assistant will only keep the newer versions when Applications is selected in the process and the App Store will not let me get the older version. This machine must have the older (Mavericks) versions of those applications so I'm considering partitioning and installing Mavericks even though it would bork my support. Is there any other way to install those versions on Yosemite? Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I understand and we Don't have volume licenses. All the apps we download are from our single school admin account. Would it still be piracy if I copied them from her old machine to her new one (both being company machines)
If not, Is there any way to accomplish what I trying to do with compliance? Purchase the apps from somewhere?

ITunes will not open my music CDs when I place them in the DVD drive. I am using Win 7 and latest download of iTunes. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with AV software turned off. No luck. Cannot upload my music CDs to iTunes library. Any ideas?

Using Win 7 and latest download of iTunes, the software will not recognize my music CDs when inserted in my DVD drive. I put a CD in the drive and nothing happens. iTunes does not have a "start" button, or some menu option to tell it to begin copying music to the library, so it just sits there. When I first installed iTunes, it would open the CDs, but I would get an error message after the first track started to transfer. Now, after a coupel uninstalls, disc cleanup, etc., nothing happens when I insert the CD. I am lost here and about to sell my new Ipod Classic because it is useless to me. Maybe I'm just too old to own something like this? Any (serious) suggestions would be appreciated.

Click "Deuthorize ALL"
Then, on any computers you still have, do Store->Authorize this computer. If there are less than 5, you will have no problem.
You can only do "deauthorize all" once a year, so in the future, if you ever throw a computer away, remember do to "Store->Deauthorize this computer" first.

Unless the device was backed up prior to restoring the backup from the iPod Touch, there is nothing to restore.
Just set up the email account again... it's not difficult, but you may need information from your corporate IT dept to set it up.

Let's try a repair install of iTunes.
Restart the PC first.
If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair".

First make sure all windows update components are installed prior to installing any third party software. Then -
Have you installed Apple Application Support - it is a required framework for iTunes (and Quicktime).
All elements of Apple software work best with Admin usermode installation. New itunes versions should definitley be rebooted prior to first use. if you install Apple software support - make sure you only have the option to notify you of updates pending - this package can install many elements not specific to your requirement and some which may have no use for you whatsoever. However run it at least once before using iTunes as it manages updates to programs already detected as installed.
There are some cases known where, on installation being finished and rebooting - the apple Application support service fails to install in automatic startup mode - this normally occurs when using a normal user account with admin elevation enabled. this is not the same as Admin mode though and will not always guarantee that kernel drivers will be correctly set in the registry for startup. Use Administrator account for Apple installations.
Some Antivirus programs will block installations of kernel drivers (itunes required) by default, or set themto manual start 9the installation is allowed because iunes is the permission set for the installation - the antivirus program will prevent suspicious activity (kernelmode installers) whilst allowing the parent process to complete - if your iTunes installation fails - uninstall, reboot, switch to admin user, suspend your antivirus program, including any system or application running watch it runs if it is an included element - then re-install itunes. When finished, type Services.msc in the Start search box and check that related services are all set to start Automatically. Reboot when finished.
Unless you try to install an x86 on a x64 required program directory this should solve your problem.

Google "old apps itunes" and you'll find a site with downloads of earlier versions. At first, you'll be told that iTunes can't access your music library because it's a newer version, but you can get around that by dragging the music data file onto iTunes. There's also a tutorial on YouTube that explains pretty clearly how to go back to older versions of iTunes.
