My daughter set a passcode on her iPod touch, and apparently can't remember it correctly. Is there a way to unlock the disabled device other than restoring from a backup?

No.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you are using Find My iPhone, you can use Remote Wipe to restore your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode.

Yes. For the screen-lock passcode you can restore from backup. You may have to place the iPod in recovery mode to do the restore. For recovery mode see:

Hello:
We have several user names and passwords in our family all connected to different devices. We have one account that we use for audiobooks only. We had to delete the programs off the laptop and reinstall and now we can't remember the user name or password. I have a good idea of what the user name is, I emailed Apple help with it and asked them if they could help me reset the password. One of the problems is that I am not honest with verification questions like birthdate for privacy and security. This isn't helpful when they want my birthdate to get beyond the security check point and I didn't write down the lie entered.
We have several hundred dollars of books in that account. I can't even remember which email address we linked the account to.
I'm hoping that maybe Apple can help if we get them the serial number of the device?

I do not have such a problem, because I had a very helpful idea. At the moment, I am usinig two User, an Admin and a User. You would not have such a problem, if you follow this instruction:
1. Make an Admin and an Useraccount.
2. Ceep both Users with keywords.
3. Hide the Ode of the Adminaccount, where you would never lose him.
4. Use the normal User.
5. If you would forget your keyword, put out the keyword of the Adminaccount and reset the keyword of the other user.

Apple does not have a magic backdoor into the device
It's a security and privacy thing.
If you can't remember your own passcode, it's your fault and you should not set one.
