• I have a Toshiba external hard drive that i used to back up my Windows 7 HP -- I want to transfer files to my new Mac and it won't accept. Help?

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that I used to back up my Windows 7 HP -- I am not able to get the files off of it (pictures) onto the Mac. I am NOT a very technical person. IS there a simple easy way to explain and do this -- OR a simple way to just say it is not possible?

If you connect the external hard drive to your Mac does it show up in the Finder? If so, do the files you are trying to transfer show up? What happens when you try to move them over?
What kind of Mac are you using and what operating system does it have running on it?
Let us know, we'll keep helping you.
Best of luck.

• Hard drive crash, trying to get back to OSX 10.8

I had a recent hard drive crash and had to reinstall from my disk. I am up to OSX 10.6.8. I purchased OSX 10.8 when it came out. It shows in my app store purchases. Does anyone know how I can get to it to bring my machine up to speed?

Got it fixed! I took a chance and got back on chat, this time with an agent who seemed to understand my problem. He took me through a series of steps Shrink Volumes and Extend Volumes that then showed my total hard drive. So, other than now having to go through the restore process again, I should be good!

• My Dell laptop hard drive crashed after using iCloud photo sharing

Has anyone had PC problems after beginning to use iCloud? I seem to have problems with shared photos on iPhone & PC and with contacts for automobile Bluetooth.

I solved my own question. So for anyone else who has this problem, here's what to do.
1. Plug in your iPhone. Sync it with the computer.
2. Click on your phone in the sidebar and click on your phone's music tab on the top right.
3. Select that you'd like to sync music from this library.
4. Select what you want to sync. Yes, it will delete the current music off of the phone but if you've imported that into your new library, then you'll just put it right back on. Your phone currently thinks it's supposed to sync with the hard drive that doesn't exist, so that's the problem.
5. Press apply, then press sync (lower right).
6. It should sync everything....I hope....That's what it looks like it's doing.
7. Never accidentally unplug your phone during an update again.
8. Hope to whatever god you pray to that your hard drive doesn't crash again.
9. Enjoy your day

• My hard drive crashed without me having backed up my music

I still have the music on my iPod, and the songs I had purchased transfered back onto my computer from the iPod. Unfortunately, all of the music I had downloaded from my CD collection will not transfer back onto iTunes. When I try to sync my iPod with new songs I had purchased since I bought a new hard drive, the two will not sync. Therefore I am unable to listen to new songs I have purchased on my iPod. Is there anything I can do to get the music back into iTunes from my iPod, and how can I get the two synced once more?

*Unfortunately, all of the music I had downloaded from my CD collection will not transfer back onto iTunes.*
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
*When I try to sync my iPod with new songs I had purchased since I bought a new hard drive, the two will not sync*
Once you have recovered everything from the iPod and you are happy with the content of iTunes, if the iPod still won't sync then try restoring it. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to sync using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

• Can OS X 10.8.5 support a Verbatim 2TB Store 'n' Save USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive to be used as back-up for videos-photos?

I am considering purchasing a Verbatim 2TB Store 'n' Save USB 3.0 Hard Drive to use as back-up for videos-photos. Does anyone know if OS X 10.8.5 supports a drive this size? ( I know that I'll only have USB 2.0 capability). My system is an early 2009 24" iMac, 2.93 MHz Intel Core Duo, with 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
I would appreciate any feedback/recommendations. Thank you for your consideration and support!

The size is not a problem. While the drive will work it will work as a USB 2 drive you are paying extra for USB 3.
If you plan on upgrading your system then getting a USB 3 drive now might make sense but if you have no plans to upgrade there is no reason to spend the extra money.
The drive, even as a USB 3 drive, seems a bit pricey. Have you looked at other drives? OWC, Amazon and Newegg.com might have better deals.
regards

• After hard-drive crash & reinstall got evrything back but photos

My hard drive went and had to be replaced. I managed to receover some stuff b4 replacing it. I then installed iTunes into this new drive, managed to get everything back--that is to say I can see and play my music in itunes, the genres, title etc are all correct. yes everything seems a-OK but the album art. The album art folder which I created (my own folder wth my own art.) is still there but it no art shows in itune. How do i get the art back?
Was there perhaps a specific fle I needed for it? If yes, which one and where does it go? (Since I may have it saved)
or is there another solution without me having to go the l;aborious thing of having to reinsert album art for all of my music files (4,258 songs X 10 seconds each to do so equals 12hours non-stop)
Thanx

• Hard Drive Crash-How do I recover and update information on my iWeb site?

Our hard drive crashed a few weeks back. We've been able to recover our data, thank goodness. However, when I went to iWeb for the first time, after the crash, it is asking me to start from scratch. When I visit our current URL, the most current version of our site, before the crash, appears. I had a support call with Apple and they told me to access the recovered information in the iWeb domain folder, but nothing was there.
Any thoughts? Can I recover what already exists? Can I edit what current exists and republish? Or (UGH) do I have to start from scratch?
Thanks!

Welcome to the discussions.

It depends whether you have a backup copy of iWeb's Domain file, usually located here:
vmeyer123 wrote:

See this Apple doc on _How to back up MobileMe data_. It says:
“Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.”
By the way, for searching purposes it may be useful to know that an iWeb '06 Domain file is called "Domain.sites" and iWeb '08 & '09 Domain files are called "Domain.sites2" — although the “.sites” extension is usually invisible.
vmeyer123 wrote:

Without the Domain file, yes. If you don't have a backup of the Domain file, say via Time Machine, paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

Hi there
I would like to transfer my iTunes library from my PC to my MacBook Air or if possible to an external hard drive that I use to back up my Air.
I understand that you can't use the same hard drive for PC and Mac.
Would really like to do away with the PC and sync the iPod to the Air.
Am about to purchase a new iPod nano as my Classic is broken.
Would appreciate any feedback please!!

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

• How Can I get my bookmarks From My Sync account without my sync key after a hard drive crash?

My Computer Hard Drive crashed before I could back up my Sync Key or add another device. How can I get My bookmarks from my sync account without resetting the sync key and wiping my data?

Not from Mozilla. Nobody knows your Sync Key except for you.
Is that hard drive usable at all? Like as an external disk in a USB hard drive enclosure?
If so, you can recover your Firefox data from that drive.
• Hard Drive crash, creating a new iTunes Library from my iPhone

Hi,
My hard drive crashed with my iPhone back up and all my pictures, music etc. I have no back up.
I need now to make sure my iPhone is backed up and get my photo's off the phone. So I have created a new iTunes and iPhoto file and copied the pictures across. But when going through the options for my iPhone in iTunes, I am fearful of wiping the information on my phone. It does not appear I can pull the information from my iPhone to my iTunes account, instead my phone will be wiped and the non existant music on my iTunes account wil replace my collection...
I understand the need to protect against priracy, but come on, the phone has the same serial number!!
How to I get around this and create a back up without deleting stuff?
Thanks

Hi,
I am about to do this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2584477?start=15&tstart=0), but having lost all my photo's on my old hard drive, I am afraid I will lose them on my iPhone!
Can someone tell me if the 'Library' photo's where kept as well as the 'Camera Roll' photo's?
I cannot figure out if the photo's from the 'Library' (on the phone) have been included in the back-up.
Thanks

• How do I export itunes library onto an external hard drive so i can put the music on my new mac book?

How do I export itunes library onto an external hard drive so i can put the music on my new mac book?

iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

login_directory = /Users/yourname
If the Library folder is not shown in your login directory, then open a Finder window, and press command+J. This will open a Finder View Options panel. On it, there is a selectable entry to Show Library Folder. Once this is selected, the Library folder will appear. Now, follow the instructions in my May 6 post. You will have to right-click on com.apple.iWork.Pages and choose Show Package Contents, before continuing.
Correction: login_directory/Library/Containers/com.apple.iWork.Pages/Data/Library/Applicatio n Support/User Templates/
The host software persists in changing the correct Application Support text above to Applicatio n Support, which does not exist.

You won't be able to install your original Acrobat 7 at all, or use your original serial number. The server which used to allow this was switched off.
But assuming you have a compatible system, like Mac OS 5 or Windows XP, licensed users of Acrobat 7 can download a replacement and get a replacement serial number.
