If you aren't syncing contacts with a supported address book app on your computer, and/or not syncing contacts over the air with an email account on your iPhone that supports this with a number of accounts that do which are free including a free Apple iCloud account, and your iPhone's backup is not being done wirelessly with a free Apple iCloud account and you don't have a backup for your iPhone on a computer, your contacts will be lost.

I just upgraded from an old Pentium computer to a new Dell XPS 18 running Windows 8.1. Downloaded latest version of iTunes to the new computer, then successfully transferred library content from the old computer to the new one via the external hard drive method. My problem is that the "old" playlists didn't transfer over. The really frustrating thing is that I can find no way to transfer the old playlists to my new iTunes library. I've tried dragging and dropping, selecting and pasting, and exploration of all the options menus, but no luck. Creating a new playlist in the new library and then clicking on the "Add To" button opens up a window into which to drop dragged songs/folders from the new library listing, but simultaneously closes the left-hand display window with all of my iPod's current playlists depicted.
I appear successfully to have backed up my iPod to the new computer, but all the sync menu options are grayed out. When I tried clicking on the Sync button, I got a warning that syncing to the new library would erase everything from the old library -- presumably obliterating my playlists with it. I have about a dozen different playlists, some of them with several hundred songs, drawn from a library of a few thousand individual items. Is there some means of importing/transferring the old playlists to the new computer/library, so that I don't manually have to drag and drop hundreds and hundreds of songs into a new set of playlists? Am I overlooking something really obvious or simple? Can I safely turn on Home Sharing and then import or paste the old playlists into the new computer's library. I don't think I'm too much of a Luddite, but given the size of my library I'm very leery of turning on Home Sharing (to the old Pentium computer) after I've successfully transferred over many GBs of content from the old machine to the new.

Recently had to factory restore my computer after detecting a nasty bug which wiped out everything I had on my computer. Is there a way to download my music from my Ipod touch to my computer? I haven't had any luck by plugging my Ipod to the computer via USB cord and am wondering if there is a way to do it at all without having to manually download the cd's myself? Thanks!

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.

i don't know if it's the computer or the phone, but when i sync my iphone to my computer it says " the iphone cannot be synced, an unknown error occured (-69)

One thing that might help out.
On your desktop create a new folder.
Call it iphone or something.
Open itunes and connect the iphone.
When the iphone shows up in itunes, go to the photos tab.
Set the iphone to sync photos from a specific folder and choose the new empty folder you created.
Now apply the changes.
This will erase any photos synced with the iphone and clear out anything that might be corrupting the photos.
Now add a couple of photos to the new folder and sync the iphone again.

The music sync is one way -computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases

I tried to find a discussion of this, but couldn't see an answer. (Maybe there isn't one.)
I have some AVI movies in iPhoto. I'd like to sync them to my iPhone. I think I did so many months ago, but can't replicate now.
I tried dragging from iPhoto to iTunes. No luck. I tried dragging to "movies': no luck. I tried exporting from iPhoto: it seemed to work, but couldn't find the movie on iTunes.

I think the movies have to be able to play in iTunes before you can view them on an iPhone.
AVI is just a "wrapper" that can contain movies with many different codecs. Not all of them are viewable in iTunes. Many of the AVI's that I get can't play in Quicktime and I use VLC and I've added Perian and Flip4Mac to be able to play them at all. These codecs aren't available on the iPhone so the movies have to be in just the right format to work.
There are many programs (looks like dozens) that can convert AVI's to be playable in iTunes. There are companies like Aimersoft, Xilisoft that sell programs that will do all sorts of conversions and optimizations for iPod/iPhone video.

How can I sync photos from events in iphone 4s to macbook pro?

The hard drive in my macbook pro crashed so I had to get a new hard drive. Unfortunately, all the data in the hard drive, including photos, music, and movies are all gone . All of my files are in my iphone 4s. When I try to sync some of the photos to my new hard drive, it won't sync the photos that I have in the events in my iphone, only in the photo stream. Is there a way I could extract the phots in events? Gladly appreciate the help .

You'll have to purchase 3rd party software if you want to extract them directly from the phone. That or e-mail them to yourself, or set up a new shared photo stream and put the photos you want in that.
The phone is not a backup device. Since the photos came from your computer to begin with, you should have a backup of them in your backup of the computer.
You may want to seriously think about investing in an internal hard drive and turning on Time Machine.

Can't sync Contacts from Mac to iPhone

I have prb with the MobileMe syncing since I updated my iPhone software to 2.0.2. I can add a new contact to my iPhone, and see it appearing in my Mac, but if I add a contact in my Mac Contact application, it just doesn't sync to my iPhone. Actually, it doesn't even appear on the MobileMe web page.
It was working before the update to 2.0.2. Weird...
Any idea/help ?

found this solution on this forum...maybe it will help.
01.) Plug iPhone into computer
02.) Sync the phone in order to back up your latest info.
03.) Restore iPhone in iTunes
04.) When restore completes, ignore the "set up as new phone" or "restore from backup" screen and just unplug the phone from the computer.
05.) Once unplugged, slide to unlock and tap on the email icon.
06.) Tap on your email type to setup (for me it was gmail)
07.) Enter your email information.
08.) Load your email and let it download a bunch of emails.
09.) Plug phone back into computer. The "set up as new phone" and "restore from backup" screen will pop up again.
10.) Choose "restore from backup" and select your last backup.
11.) Wait until complete.
