HT1296 How would I transfer files from computer back to iPad?

I bought the iPad 2 in Fall of 2011. I just updated the operating system to 5.1.1.
Before the update, all of my files and apps were transfered to iTunes.
How do I transfer the files and apps from iTunes back to my iPad?

I'm glad you wrote back.  The message you are getting would indicate your iPad has not been synced to this iTunes account.  In iTunes with your iPad NOT connected do the following:
First go to Store and make sure you Authorize This Computer with your Apple ID and Password
Next go to:
Edit > Preferences > Devices and choose Do Not Automatically Sync iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch when Connected to iTunes
Now, connect your iPad and once it is recognized on the left side, instead of clicking on it as you did previously, RIGHT click it.  This will open a drop down box and you should choose Transfer Purchases.
This will transfer your Apps to iTunes.
Now, do not sync.  You're going to need to restore from backup if you have any hope of getting your GoodReader content back. 
To do this, Again, right click your iPad an choose restore.  Choose the most recent backup (I do hope you have been regularly backing up your iPad, because if you haven't, you just may not get your contect back.
That's about the best I can offer you.  No matter the outcome, at least your iPad will now be working correctly with your iTunes account on your computer.

    Goodreader is particularly good in that it has a integal file tree and you can mount your computers harddrive and navigate directly on your ipad.

    I don't have any experience in this directly (I migrated to a Mac many years ago) but I suggest the following articles are of most use to you:
    If your iMac has OS X 10.7 installed on it then you can use the Migration Assistant for PC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796) as long as both the iMac and your PC are on the same network.
    If your iMac has an older version of OS X installed on it then the process is more manual and is explained here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518

    Sorry for the delay in response, I didn't think many answers would come in so quickly being Christmas and all...
    My Dad only needs to be able to access files for reference; any editing or alteration to pre-existing files would largely be done on a desktop or his laptop. In the meantime, Dropbox does look ideal and I will investigate along with the other great ideas suggested on here for the best option.

    You may drag & drop between external hds. 
    Should you run into trouble.
    Take the exernal drive appart.  Take out the harddrive.  Try reading the data via a usb adapter. Put a household finan on the hd.

    USB disk. You still have to go through iTunes.
    Connect device to computer/mac
    Select your device in iTunes menu.
    Apps...
    At thebottom of the page you will see the app.
    Select it and the Add for windows and + for mac

    In the long run there is no way to access or uplood data on your device without iTunes unless you JailBrake....

    Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.
