hello.i have 2 wd 1tb external hard.if i want to get backup from them,what should i do?does it need to having 2 tb free space?please explain.

It does depend on what application you are using to make your back up.
Lets talk about Time Machine.
IN System Preferences > Time Machine your set the Drive you want the Backups to be kept on.
If this is an External Drive (recommended) then it will need to be connected and On all the time the Computer is On.
On First Run it will Save the whole OS X Boot drive including the Applications, System, Library and the Users files.
After that it starts making regular backups mainly of the things that Change.
If for instance you wanted to get back a Pic you had Dragged to the Trash from your Pictures Folder you would go to the Pictures Folder on your computer.
Then you start the Time Machine App from the icon in the Dock.
This reduces the Finder window to the middle of the Galaxy Backdrop.
It has a Time slide on the right and some navigation Arrows
Dates that indicate the last few changes to the folder you have on display are indicated on the right (it might not be every date)
You click the arrows that will go to these Dates and then you can highlight the item you want and then click Restore.
At first you will only need as much space as the size if the Hard Drive contents with the OS, your files and anything you have added such as Music and Photos and Movies.
As it make incremental Backups there will come a time when the 2Tb drive will get full.
Time Machine can mange the files it keep after this point.
However just because it gets full does not mean a Full OS X and Application and Users files Restore will need a Drive on your computer of 2Tb.
This is a brief and simplified overview.

I am currently using Time Machine to an external hard drive connected by firewire. I have just purchased a time capsule - is there a way to move my existing backup to the time capsule so I do not lose my history?

You can move the backup, but you will likely not be able to continue to backup to the file that you move to the Time Capsule.
Time Machine will be able to access the "old" backups on the Time Capsule if the file is enclosed in a special container called a sparsebundle. This can get complicated, but details are available if you want them.
All things considered, this might be the same answer as "no" for most folks.

Time Machine is a backup of your computer SYSTEM, not idealized as a data archive.
Consider other options for the future >
Data Storage Platforms; their Drawbacks & Advantages
#1. Time Machine / Time Capsule
Drawbacks:
1. Time Machine is not bootable, if your internal drive fails, you cannot access files or boot from TM directly from the dead computer.
2. Time machine is controlled by complex software, and while you can delve into the TM backup database for specific file(s) extraction, this is not ideal or desirable.
3. Time machine can and does have the potential for many error codes in which data corruption can occur and your important backup files may not be saved correctly, at all, or even damaged. This extra link of failure in placing software between your data and its recovery is a point of risk and failure. A HD clone is not subject to these errors.
4. Time machine mirrors your internal HD, in which cases of data corruption, this corruption can immediately spread to the backup as the two are linked. TM is perpetually connected (or often) to your computer, and corruption spread to corruption, without isolation, which TM lacks (usually), migrating errors or corruption is either automatic or extremely easy to unwittingly do.
5. Time Machine does not keep endless copies of changed or deleted data, and you are often not notified when it deletes them; likewise you may accidently delete files off your computer and this accident is mirrored on TM.
6. Restoring from TM is quite time intensive.
7. TM is a backup and not a data archive, and therefore by definition a low-level security of vital/important data.
8. TM working premise is a “black box” backup of OS, APPS, settings, and vital data that nearly 100% of users never verify until an emergency hits or their computers internal SSD or HD that is corrupt or dead and this is an extremely bad working premise on vital data.
9. Given that data created and stored is growing exponentially, the fact that TM operates as a “store-it-all” backup nexus makes TM inherently incapable to easily backup massive amounts of data, nor is doing so a good idea.
10. TM working premise is a backup of a users system and active working data, and NOT massive amounts of static data, yet most users never take this into consideration, making TM a high-risk locus of data “bloat”.
11. TM like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
12. *Level-1 security of your vital data.
Advantages:
1. TM is very easy to use either in automatic mode or in 1-click backups.
2. TM is a perfect novice level simplex backup single-layer security save against internal HD failure or corruption.
3. TM can easily provide a seamless no-gap policy of active data that is often not easily capable in HD clones or HD archives (only if the user is lazy is making data saves).
#2. HD archives
Drawbacks:
1. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
2. Unless the user ritually copies working active data to HD external archives, then there is a time-gap of potential missing data; as such users must be proactive in archiving data that is being worked on or recently saved or created.
Advantages:
1. Fills the gap left in a week or 2-week-old HD clone, as an example.
2. Simplex no-software data storage that is isolated and autonomous from the computer (in most cases).
3. HD archives are the best idealized storage source for storing huge and multi-terabytes of data.
4. Best-idealized 1st platform redundancy for data protection.
5. *Perfect primary tier and level-2 security of your vital data.
#3. HD clones (see below for full advantages / drawbacks)
Drawbacks:
1. HD clones can be incrementally updated to hourly or daily, however this is time consuming and HD clones are, often, a week or more old, in which case data between today and the most fresh HD clone can and would be lost (however this gap is filled by use of HD archives listed above or by a TM backup).
2. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
Advantages:
1. HD clones are the best, quickest way to get back to 100% full operation in mere seconds.
2. Once a HD clone is created, the creation software (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) is no longer needed whatsoever, and unlike TM, which requires complex software for its operational transference of data, a HD clone is its own bootable entity.
3. HD clones are unconnected and isolated from recent corruption.
4. HD clones allow a “portable copy” of your computer that you can likewise connect to another same Mac and have all your APPS and data at hand, which is extremely useful.
5. Rather than, as many users do, thinking of a HD clone as a “complimentary backup” to the use of TM, a HD clone is superior to TM both in ease of returning to 100% quickly, and its autonomous nature; while each has its place, TM can and does fill the gap in, say, a 2 week old clone. As an analogy, the HD clone itself is the brick wall of protection, whereas TM can be thought of as the mortar, which will fill any cracks in data on a week, 2-week, or 1-month old HD clone.
6. Best-idealized 2nd platform redundancy for data protection, and 1st level for system restore of your computers internal HD. (Time machine being 2nd level for system restore of the computer’s internal HD).
7. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
#4. Online archives
Drawbacks:
1. Subject to server failure or due to non-payment of your hosting account, it can be suspended.
2. Subject, due to lack of security on your part, to being attacked and hacked/erased.
Advantages:
1. In case of house fire, etc. your data is safe.
2. In travels, and propagating files to friends and likewise, a mere link by email is all that is needed and no large media needs to be sent across the net.
3. Online archives are the perfect and best-idealized 3rd platform redundancy for data protection.
4. Supremely useful in data isolation from backups and local archives in being online and offsite for long-distance security in isolation.
5. *Level-1.5 security of your vital data.
#5. DVD professional archival media
Drawbacks:
1. DVD single-layer disks are limited to 4.7Gigabytes of data.
2. DVD media are, given rough handling, prone to scratches and light-degradation if not stored correctly.
Advantages:
1. Archival DVD professional blank media is rated for in excess of 100+ years.
2. DVD is not subject to mechanical breakdown.
3. DVD archival media is not subject to ferromagnetic degradation.
4. DVD archival media correctly sleeved and stored is currently a supreme storage method of archiving vital data.
5. DVD media is once written and therefore free of data corruption if the write is correct.
6. DVD media is the perfect ideal for “freezing” and isolating old copies of data for reference in case newer generations of data become corrupted and an older copy is needed to revert to.
7. Best-idealized 4th platform redundancy for data protection.
8. *Level-3 (highest) security of your vital data.

Retrieve RR backups from external hard drive

I am trying to recover data files that have been backed-up
using Lenovo Rescue and Recovery which I am unable to
retrieve. They include a lot of photos and documents.
How the files got to where they are now is rather complex:
1. The laptop was set-up with 2 back-up programmes running from the
start. They were Lenovo R&R as well as Windows Vista Backup (whoever
set-up the second was not aware that the first was running). Lenovo
R&R backed-up to C:\, Windows Vista Backup to an external USB drive
E:\
2. The external drive (500GB) became full after a period of approx. 6
months. I think this was because Vista Backup was not only backing-up
documents, settings etc. but ALSO the Lenovo RRBACKUPS directory. As
this was altered everytime Vista Backup ran Vista copied RRBACKUPS
once more.
3. In attempting to free up space, older backups made by Windows Vista
were deleted. At this point it had been assumed that Vista was making
COMPLETE back-ups each time hence the disappearance of 500GB of disk
space (documents amounted to no more than 30GB or thereabouts).
4. Laptop then went very wrong (unrelated problem) and Microsoft
technical support helped to restore first factory installation. We thought
that we had everything backed-up by Vista so C:\ formatted and all
files wiped.
5. On restore of computer, Vista Backup refuses to open any of the
remaining back-up files. Even with new mediaid.bin created by
SDUTIL.exe still failed to open. Files extracted manually (using
7-zip) to folder on E:\. The folders were extracted in date order
(from oldest to newest) and overwrite files was selected so only
newest copies of each file present.
6. After this process have some documents (but not all) but also what
would appear to be a complete RRBACKUPS folder. Would REALLY like to
access these files and moved folder so now E:\RRBACKUPS. However R&R
refuses to recognise backup.
Why is this? Obviously I'm not certain if some files are missing or if
it is complete. I can send you a list of directories and files if that
will help. I understand there is a problem with version discrepencies
and would be willing to try installing different versions of R&R to
see if I can find the right one (the OS has not been changed on the
laptop, still Vista). How many versions have been released to the
public?

Ouch! Not a nice predicament to be in Did you by any chance create a boot recovery disc with R&R from the "old" system?
Can you, have you tried creating one with the current system? Start > Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media. The disc must be a cd not a dvd.
Assuming the current version is the same as that was used on the "old" system by using the recovery media it may be possible to see the backups on the usb hard drive*. If it does, you then have two options; it may be possible to recover files by moving them to the notebook hard drive.b) recovering the system to the latest and greatest backup you can find**
*Ensure the usb hard drive is recognised at boot by checking in the Startup menu in BIOS.
** This will erase all current data on the notebook's current drive, make sure you save it somewhere else first.

-I used WD backup program to store itunes on external hard drive
-hard drive on mac pro crashed, replaced hard drive
-trying to restore itunes songsa from external drive and when I copied songs from external hard drive to new internal hard drive which has itunes program, only song titles appear and track number for songs I ripped from CDs. All info is present for songs I purchased from itunes (why is there a difference in the way these two are restored???)
-Can I restore itunes from external drive so that artist and album are associated with each song title I ripped from CDs?

I know MP3 and AAC save tag data, and I believe AIFF does as well (if you want to keep them in full-quality but space-greedy format). I don't think WAV supports tagging which is why they were lost. Read:

This time make sure you have a complete backup of your itunes folder (which, in fact you may still have). That way you can recover your complete library and everything intact (as long as you keep your backups up to date).

I recently purchased IMac G5. I cannot import my photos into G5(has iphoto5.4) from external hard drive. I get a message saying you have installed a new version of iphoto.

Had another idea. Since you were not upgrading a computer to iPhoto 5 - which would upgrade your existing iPhoto Library Folder (database) and since you, I presume, already have a working iPhoto 5 Library Folder -- perhaps we have to trick iPhoto into doing the upgrade.
Quit iPhoto5. Move to the desktop or rename the existing iPhoto 5 Library Folder.
But also move or delete the existing iPhoto 5 preferences file:
You will find it in your Home directory:
(Home/your account) >Library>Preferences>com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Remove or trash the preference (.plist file) and restart iPhoto.
This will get iPhoto 5 to launch like it was the very first time. With only the backup in your Pictures Folder it will try to open with it and do the upgrade.

I connected my external hard drive originally formatted on PC on my new Macbook. The first time I connected it I could see all my files but today I connected it and after I couldn't see any file nor even on my pc appears as NO NAME with a different name and nothing on it. I think was reformatted, any help to recover all my data?

If the Apple Store couldn't get files off of the drive, it is unlikely that you will be able to. If you have backups, those would be the best way to go. You could also try booting up the computer and holding down T to boot into Target Disk Mode. Plug the broken computer into another one with FireWire and see if it works to recover data from external hard drive. If you can see it, try booting up the broken computer while holding down Option. Choose Recovery HD from the menu, then choose to Reinstall OS X.
It is unlikely that this will work, because I'm pretty sure that the Apple Store would have tried this. You could try using expensive software to get files off the drive, but it would be risky and the results might not be any good.

My win8 pc hard drive failed. After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used). ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help! The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection. I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that. Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes? Thanks!!

The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

I want to set apple capsule to backup my external hard drive, but it is currently in the exclusion list.
I can't remove it from the exclusion list, because I can't select it and the - option is greyed out.
It is a WD Passport, used for document files only.

I am trying to get Time Machine to backup my external hard drive. I have the external drive formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I have also removed the drive from the Excluded list. I put some 'test' files on the external drive and told TM to do a backup and when it is finished the only way I can see my external hard drive in TM is if it is connected to the computer. It doesn't seem to be backed up anywhere in TM that I can see. Please Help

You should be able to access your past iTunes purchases. You'll need to re-rip your CDs See: HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.
