HT1338 Darwin/BSD (localhost) (console) on a dark screen. What does this mean?

This morning I attempted to start up twice and got this message on a dark screen. Behind it "Responder couldn't read user specified computer name". On the third try it started up normally. What does this indicate?

Could be many things, like Hard Drive problems for one.

I tried to turn my mac on 2 days ago and this is what came up. The message tells me to restart my computer but every time I do it just comes back to the same screen. We done have Internet at my home so I am unsure how this could have happened. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what is your mac OS version and your iMac model? The pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers have different troubleshooting steps from newer iMacs, so we need to make sure which you have. The non-intuituve forum labeling here means people with relatively recent iMacs are tricked in to posting here instead of a more active forum for iMacs made since 2006.

  • Console warning - what does this mean?

    Help!
I installed 10.3.9 and thought I had done everything correctly. However, when I was using Safari on the jigsaw.com website, the fan started racing at a very high speed.
Not knowing much about computers, but having read MANY posts, I looked at the console log and found the following:

    Me too.
I'm playing an iTunes video that I downloaded and is in my movies folder, then the AUDIO/VIDEO synchronization mismatch.  I check Console and get "iTunes AVF Warning:  retireCmdAsynch ....q size = 12, releasing oldest CVPixelBuffer"
Which now that I read it, makes sense with symptom.  "Asynch"  "PixelBuffer"
Problem is, I don't know how to solve this issue.  It doesn't happen on every video, but would appreciate some sighted advice.
    Thanks,

  • I keep getting this Console message, constantly repeating. What does it mean and how do I fix it?

This Console message repeates endlessly. I suspect this may be one of the reasons this machine is running slowly? In any event, doesn't seem normal to have an endlessly repeating error message.
    7/21/13 3:51:38 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (scManagerD[81914]) posix_spawn("/Applications/SafeConnect.app/Contents/MacOS/scManagerD", ...): No such file or directory
    Any help is appreciated.

You have something installed called "SafeConnect?" Or did you remove it but not use the uninstaller?
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
      10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

    Hello Omar,
Maybe you've found out by now but I believe it's because the apps are 'refreshing'. I think this is new to iOS 7 because I don't remember it happening before...
If you go into your settings-->general--> and about halfway down the list is BACKGROUND APP REFRESH.
I wish I could include a picture to make it easier but if you go into this setting you will see a list of all the apps that will refresh and also the master switch that turns them all off.. I'm not sure what it's doing when it's refreshing tho, maybe checking for updates or location?
    Hope this helps,
    Mister

If what I read is correct, you will need to take your MBA to Apple to have its firmware restored.
I cannot explain why this happened.

  • Restarted G4 and got "Darwin/BSD (Amnesiac) (console)" on black screen

    Hi,
I had been playing music on my PB G4 for a while and when I came back to it to turn off the music I noticed that none of the info. in the menu bar was there (date/time/battery/volume etc.). This happened a few days ago also, so this time I decided to Restart. When I selected Restart, my computer didn't ask the usual, "Are you sure you want to restart?". Instead, the screen just went black and said, "Darwin/BSD (Amnesiac) (console)" and below asked for a login and then password. Well, I got my login wrong, so it said "incorrect login" and then returned to the same screen again. This time I think I got my login/password right but it still returned to the same black screen. At that point I pushed the power button and the computer turned off. After a few seconds I pushed it again to start up. It started up fine and I'm now backing up all my files, but should I be worried???

    roxy_leopard:
The Darwin screen is usually caused by a corrupted NetInfo database, which usually involves trying to sort it out in Single User Mode. Sometimes a complete reformat and re-install is needed. That is why I suggest keeping your backup up to date, and do regular maintenance. However, if you have been running since your recovery, it is unlikely to recur, although there are no guarantees.
    Cheers
    cornelius
