HT1338 Frequent freeze up since installing Lion.

My computer freezes up very often (several times/hour) since I updated to Lion.  The cursor still moves, but the screen is frozen and nothing responds to the cursor.  I have a mid 2007 iMac.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Earlier this week (on the advice of a post on this support page) I replaced my Logitech wireless mouse with my old Apple mouse.  After that I went 1 1/2 days without a freeze up.  Yesterday the freeze ups started again.  It seems they happen about every 1/2 hour.  It's curious that if the freeze up occurs during a video, the screen freezes and the audio plays on until the end.
Today I copied the following information from the console screen.  I deleted at total of 1,656 lines of the 'kernel' messages.  I indicated the two places where I deleted the 36 pages of lines,

  • MacBook pro freezes up since installing Lion

Ever since I updated to Lion last summer sometimes my system freezes up right after starting up.  Has anyone else been having this problem or figured out how to fix it?

It happens right after start-up when the desktop and icons appear.  When I go to click on an application, I get the color spinning wheel and it just hangs there until you hold the power button down and force a shutdown.  It doesn't matter if I wait a couple of minutes after everything has started up or not, it's usually when I first try and open to click something or open anything I get the spinning color wheel.  Usually after I'm forced to restart it's fine but I've had a few times where I had to force a shutdown a second time because it did it again right after I restarted it.

  • Why since installed Lion on my IMac it happened many times that my computer freeze and I have to restart everything before something work again?

Why since installed Lion on my IMac it happened many times that my computer freeze and I have to restart everything before something work again?

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • My system preferences freezes since installing Lion

My system preferences freezes since installing Lion can no longer gain access AT ALL, frankly really annoyed as Mac is only 3 months old, any idea when the bug fixes are happening.

    Could be corrupted preferences...
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.systemprefeences.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac, open System Preferences, try again.

  • Imac Intel freezin  & crashing since installing lion

My late 2009 24" iMac has been freezin and crashing since installing lion. Sometimes red dots appear on the display and sometimes the image breaks up and then freezes. Happens in Safari, Photoshop, Word and other programs. Is it a NVIDIA driver issue? Is there a fix?

I don't know if this helps, but OS X Lion has to re-index all of the files (correct me if I'm wrong), therefore, if you have just installed OS X Lion, you need to give it some time untill it has indexed all the files again (which could take a while if you have loads of files), after this it should return to normal.
    Otherwise, a clean install?

  • Trouble connecting since installing Lion

Since installing Lion on my Macbook Pro, I'm having trouble acquiring and maintaining connections with my WiFi signal.  No such issues with my Snow Leopard/Leopard Macs, PCs, iPhone and iPad.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    JD

JD, I have experienced the same ... losing connection frequently ... what did it for me was to unplug my router (Time Capsule) and network extension (Apple Extreme) for about 15 minutes, then plug back in ... don't know if it will work for you, but it surely is worth trying I'd say

  • Very erratic behaviour since installing Lion - where do I start

Since installing Lion a few weeks ago on my Macmini I've have a couple of issues which are bugging (no pun intended) the life out of me. I'm almost at the point of doing a complete erase and install of Lion it's that bad. Normally I always do an erase and install when upgrading OSX but the setup of my mini is such that it would take me a long time to rebuild it from scratch. That'll teach me.. I just upgraded Lion on top of Snow Leopeard, whereas on my MBP I did a clean install of Lion and no problems.
Here are the issues on my mini:
    1) In the past couple of days I've had a couple of kernal panics "You need to restart your computer..." I've never had this before on any of my Mac's. The only thing that has changed on my system is that I've updated a driver for my WD MyBook drive, which I use as my TM backup. Since upgrading to Lion I switched off time machine and only turned this back on because I thought I'd reached a general steady state with my system and after installing the driver update. I've since disabled TM so fingers crossed no more problems..
    2) On serveral occasions, whilst using back to my mac, to screenshare my mini on my MBP, I've had windows and hard drives disappear off screen. If I do a right mouse click on my finder I can view the windows on screen but when I select them they disapear. I have a feeling that mission control is doing something, but I never use this, nor do I have anything set-up, other than the intial configuration. This is *really* doing my head in. I can usually fix it by changing the screen dimensions on my mini through the Display control panel or switching my TV over to the hdmi input so I can view the desktop directly on my TV (as opposed to screensharing).
I'm not really sure if this is a problem with mission control, or back to my mac, or a video input problem (I'm using a mini displayport to dvi and dvi to hdmi cable to connect the mini to my TV).
Any troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated, particulalry for issue 2.

Lion no longer supports PowerPC apps. If this is Microsoft Office 2008 (Entourage 2008) then you should disable the syncing services.  (I don't have Office 2008 installed anymore so I don't know exactly what it's called anymore.)  If you have Microsoft Office 2004 or earlier, then it can't be run on Lion at all since Lion removed Rosetta, which is what allowed a PPC app to run on an Intel based Mac.
Also, I believe Microsoft removed sync services from the current Outlook 2011 (which replaces Entourage) so even upgrading to a newer version of Microsoft Office will not get you back that calendar sync feature.  Supposedly Microsoft is working on a new syncing system, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Posting "Check the 'More like this'" area and not simply providing the answer is a great way to make these groups worthless.
You're ignoring context.  On the old Apple Discussion Groups I never posted replies like that, instead giving people relatively detailed answers.  The new Apple Support Communities made things worse by introducing certain inefficiencies.  Then came Lion.  The flood of messages that came with Lion required a painful choice for any of the people who had been helping here: (1) Give quality responses to a few questions and ignore the rest.  (2) When applicable, give a brief answer such as the one that you found objectionable.  (3) Give up all the other normal activities of life and spend full time trying to answer questions here.
People who needed help with Lion problems seemed to have trouble discovering existing message threads that described how to solve their problems.  I never posted the suggestion of "Check the 'More like this' area" without verifying that the help that the poster needed could be found there.  Even doing that, what I posted saved me time that I could use to help someone else.
The people helping here are all volunteers.  None of them is being paid for the time they spend here.  They all have a life outside of Apple Support Communities.  It's arrogant of you to demand that people helping here spend more time than they already do.

  • Since installing lion my iMac and powebook can't find my printer

since installing lion my iMac and macbook pro can't find my printer (it is on the supported devices list and I downloaded the latest drivers).
I called canon and they stepped me through reseting my print system and reinstalling the print drivers and libraries but I have tried direct USB and via airport and the computers dont recognise the printer anymore. Just to be sure it was not the printer I tried to print from my iphone and that works...
I have changed the usb cable, changed usb ports and nothing can get the computers to recognise the device. Please help all advice welcome!

    :-) here's an interesting link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#canon
Note: If you've haven't used Software Update recently on your Mac, please run it before connecting a printer or scanner to update your Mac's database on what software is available.
I would also do this after you plug in your printer. Apple might have updates for your printer.
there is Canon Software for lion. try uninstalling everything and starting from 0.
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_al l_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx860#DriversAndSoftware
I also read that if your printer shows up in your printer list before the appropriate drivers are installed, it might mess things up, if you plug in your printer and see it after cleaning everything you had done previously off, then try removing it from the printer list (don't just unplug it, delete the profile). And then install the appropriate drivers.

  • Weird keyboard quirks since installing Lion

Ever since installing Lion, my keyboard has been acting weird.
I can't quite figure out what's going on. So far, I've just discovered a few weird things, like:
I can't use left shift to capitalize T, though it can capitalize every other letter, and I can capitalize it with right shift. What?
Normally I use cmd-shift-[ or cmd-shift-] to switch through tabs in Google Chrome. I can't use the right cmd to activate this, and I can only use it to select the previous tab, with [. Also tried adding cmd-shift-] as a shortcut in sys prefs, but it won't accept it.
The sys prefs F1-12 behavior preference is flipped from what it should be.
I'm sure there will be more, but that's just what I've discovered so far. There are no hardware issues with any keys. Restarting doesn't help. I'm totally baffled.

    @willadler,
Check to see if this issue is occuring system-wide by creating a test account (System Preferences > Users & Groups).  After creating a new account and logging in as that new user, does the issue still occur?  If so, then it might be a system-wide Login Item, so try Safe Boot to be sure, however, if the keyboard works fine in that new user account, then try the following:
    • Delete (or Move) the following files from your home folder:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.lockfile
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist.lockfile
    • Logout and log back in for the changes to take effect, and test the keyboard (NOTE: deleting the above files will reset much of the customizations you have made in System Preferences, so I'd recommend Moving them to the Desktop in case you need to restore them)

  • Since installing Lion, no Finder window will open on the desktop.  I can see them through "Quick Look" and "View all Windows" in the contextual menu for Finder in the

  • Six kernel panics since installing Lion

So I've had six kernel panics since installing Lion on my sandy bridge MBP.  Usually running safari, mail, and excel when they occur.   Weird third-party process or something?  I actually don't have many applications installed on this computer.  Any thoughts?
Perhaps this has something to do with it but I don't know, when looking at my login items there's a flag next to iTunesHelper.  I don't know what the flag means.
    Thanks

The flag simply means hide this application after it automatically launches.  It should have nothing to do with your kernal panic. You need to post the relevant log message for folks to analyse.
There are others who can help with that; I'm not really good at reading the logs.
Although it shouldn't be responsible, you might want to take gfxCardStatus out of your startup just in case.  You can always put it back in if that's not the culprit.  Others have used it without any kernal panics, so it's probably a bad WAG.

since installing Lion, I am unable to add to iPhoto from an e mail or desk top. Something about power pc.  I thought I had a Mac! What should I do to restore the facility?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
