HT1338 how do I boot a MacBook pro that will not shut down

HOw can I reboot shut don MacBook pro that will not shutdown, please help.....?......

Hi, I'm having similar problem. I just got a Lacie ext drive to back up my photos and vids and now my laptop wont shut down or go to sleep properly.  May or may not be related to Lacie. Could just be a coincidence.
I first noticed problem when I closed it to go to sleep and the apple logo kept flashing on and off.
When I opened the laptop the screen was flashing white then black, then white then black.   Had to force shut
it down (opt, cmnd, power), had to hold it down a very long time before it responded.  However, that didn't keep it shut down. It just started back up again.  But at least it wasn't flashing.
Then when i tried to shut it down normally it would shut down, go black for a moment and then the Apple song would play and it would start  back up again.    It also won't stay asleep. It sleeps for two seconds when put into sleep mode then snaps awake.
strange problem... Very annoying. Next option is to unplug and let battery run out.

  • MacBook Pro 2013 will not shut down without restarting.

I got a macbook pro a month ago and it will not shut down without pressing down on the power button. Using the normal Shut down options only restarts the computer. I have done all the disk utility repairs, installed new mountain lion, reset the PRAM several times, and ran software repair from doing the shutdown hold D. I also checked to see if the PRAM is good, and it is Ok in systems utilities. It will also restart when i have not touched the computer for 10 or so minutes and will go to locked user log in.
I really don't know what else to do. If you need more details let me know. Any advice?
    Thanks

    Thanks!
I tried this and discovered something new. I noticed that if the computer is charging while shutdown, the computer will still restart. However, if the computer is charging and you shutdown, then unplug the charger, it will remain off. It will also resume normal shut down and sleep if you shut down while unplugged, now. An idea why it will still restard while plugged in though? If not i very much appreciate your help so far!

  • How to reinstall OS on Macbook Pro that will not boot

I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro that is stuck on the grey screen with apple logo and progress bar. I'm going to get all my data off of it and then I want to wipe everything off of it and re-install the OS so it is like factory again.
Do i need a disk? What is the simplest way to do this?

Can you inform me on how to format the new hard drive once I receive it?
You will have to connect the new HDD to the MBP via USB (you will need to install the HDD in an enclosure).
    Boot into the recovery partition.
Select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu.
Open Disk Utility>Erase, select the new HDD from the left hand column and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and click on the erase button.
Exit Disk Utility and select the reinstall OSX option from the 4 option menu.
    Install the OSX.
Restart the MBP with the OPTION key down.  Select the new HDD icon and boot the MBP.
If successful, install the new HDD into the MBP.
    Ciao.
Also, should I even bother re-installing the OS after there is a new hard drive installed? Would it make any difference?
You need an OSX in order for the MBP to function.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro 13" will not shut down.

The last few times I have tried to shut down my computer, it gives me an endless blu screen with black and grey spinning wheel (the one at startup). The only way I have been able to get it to shutdown was to force a shutdown using the power button. The last time, I let it sit overnight trying to shutdown and nothing happened. Is there anything I can do?

from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2342136&tstart=0 CMCSK Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done. Repair permissions same way.
    Hope this solves your problem.

I have a MacBook Pro that will not boot up. The apple symbol is there and the spinning wheel keeps spinning. Any idea how I can fix this?

    Reinstall OS X.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    OR
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

    Hello,
I recently installed Premiere Pro CS6 and the program will not shut down normally, I have to always shut it down using the task manager.  Should I try re-installing the program?

We cannot know. You are not providing any system information. Such issues are most of the time driver issues where certain DLLs are not released/ unloaded from memory.

  • Macbook 13 in. will not shut down

I'm having the same shutdown problem as a few days ago except this time Verify Permissions and verify disk do not solve anything. I wonder if it tends to behave this way if you leave it on too long?
I've only had the computer since June, brand new, and I'm disappointed in its reliability if I already have troubles trying to just shut it off.

I had had it on a long time yesterday, plugged directly in, with some use of Airport and also a warm USB hub and flash drives. It had been on so long with all I was doing that apparently maybe the heat contributed to the problem. I had to finally press the Power button to shut it down because every time I tried the normal soft Shut Down method, it would keep telling me that Finder would not quit and that I'd have to make Finder quit before it could "log off". I tried that but all it lets you do is Relaunch Finder when you try and then it won't log off/shut down. Finally I pushed the Power button.
The next morning, when the laptop was still cool, I powered it up and then after a very brief usage today, tried the usual Shut Down and it did work this morning. I will check it out again in a minute. If I don't post again, then that means it shut down again properly. Perhaps that would indicate that these units have trouble shutting down the normal soft Shut Down way through the Apple menu if they are very warm from use.
I did test Disk Utility last night before pressing the Power button but when verifying the disk and the permissions, nothing seemed to be awry. I should be getting TechTool Pro soon; Disk Warrior doesn't have a version that yet works with Macs from after Jan. of this year from what I'm told, as for optimization software. Strange that I've had this macbook only since June.
In general I like it ok but am a little nervous when it does things like this since I've been thinking about whether to get a Macbook Pro. Thanks.

  • Installed XP Pro - now will not shut down

I have a PC using an MS-6534 Motherboard that WAS running Windows 98SE with no problems.
For 'corporate' reasons the PC has been re-installed with XP Pro.
Ever since XP was put on it the PC will not shutdown. It gets to "Windows is shutting down" and then hangs ... stops functioning! Reset it and it starts fine. If I RESTART it then it works fine. I even took it back to 98 thinking I had a 'new' harfware problem, but it shuts down fine.
Can anyone give me some ideas of a) what is going on and b) how do I fix it?
    Thanks,

  • MacBook Pro will not shut down

A principal at my district has a MacBook Pro 15-inch Early 2008 (2.4/2X1GB/200-5400/256VRAM/AG) running OS 10.5.8 that will not shut down. When shut down is chosen, the computer restarts instead of shutting down. It does not matter how shut down is chosen, whether it is from pull down menu, keyboard command, click on shutdown in the login menu, etc. I have tried resetting PRAM, SMC, starting up from a known good system, and run diagnostics applications (which turn up no problems). The only way to get the machine to tunr off is hold the power button down until it shuts off.
The user complains it also gets very hot when he leaves it sitting open in sleep mode. I have not observed that particular symptom. It also tend to run down the battery faster than it should (battery check shows it to have 80+% of it's original capacity.) But Activity Monitor does not show any unusual activity.
Any suggestions what I can try next to figure this thing out?
    Thanks.

On occassion (like tonight) my MacBook Pro will not
shut down - even when I attempt to force quit. Any
    suggestions?
Happens here too, but very rarely. In my case it mostly happens late at night when OS X is supposed to run some internal maintenance jobs, maybe some of them do not allow a shutdown?
Does holding the power button down for approx. 10 seconds work? If yes, then I would not worry about it. If no, there is something seriously odd and I would report it to AppleCare.
    Cheers,
    Uwe

  • My 2008 MacBook Pro (A1260) will not startup

    Greetings!
I was given a 2008 MacBook Pro that will not startup. I press the power button and it trys to start for like 5 seconds and goes no further. The battery is fully charged and the powercord is pluged in. I know that Apple has it listed a "Vintage", but I'd like to get it working. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    David

    David,
were you also given two grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro, called “Mac OS X Install Disc 1” and “Mac OS X Install Disc 2”? You’ll need those discs to be able to further diagnose the current problem. If those discs weren’t given to you, you can purchase a replacement pair from Apple.
