HT1338 How do I update the Operating System for my MacBook Pro?

I currently have OS version 10.5.8.  I can't get the proper plug-ins for Flash anymore because my Mac OS is too old.  I've tried updating the OS, but it will not let me install it.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
             Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

  • How do I reinstall the operating system on my MacBook Pro without using my apple id?

I'm selling my computer. Everything has been erased. Now the operating system, Lion, needs to be installed. I believe the computer did not come with a cd so reinstalling is done through wifi.

We bought it in January 2010. I'm not sure what OS it came with but when I look at the dates of each OS on wikipedia it looks like it came with Snow Leopard. The only disk I happen to have is Leopard.
Let's drop back a minute and go through what you can and cannot do with this machine.
    1.  If the machine came with Leopard, you can install Leopard and then go to Snow Leopard and up the line of the on-line Mac OS X versions, that is, Lion, and Mountain Lion and Mavericks as compatible.  If the disk for Leopard that you have is a grey face disk, that is a machine-specific disk and will only work if it is the disk that came with your MacBook Pro.  If it is a panted face (black) with a large silver X it is a retail version and will install IF your machine came with Leopard.
    2.  If your MacBook Pro came with Snow Leopard, it will not install Leopard.  If it came with Snow Leopard and is a 2010 machine, it will not install the retail version of Snow Leopard since that is 10.6.3 and the 2010 and later machines came with 10.6.6 preinstalled.  You must call Apple Customer Support and have them send you the machine-specific install disk for that machine.  There is a fee of something like $20 in the US for doing that.
    3.  If your machine came with Snow Leopard, you need to reinstall Snow Leopard and then move to the on-line Mac OS X versions, you cannot download a version with your Apple ID associated with the version currently on the machine.  The starting point HAS to be Snow Leopard for the new owner to do an on-line Mac OS X download.
    4.  With Snow Leopard installed and on-line software updated to 10.6.8, the new owner can then move up to Lion or above depending on the compatibility of the hardware.  To move to Lion or above the machine must have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  To move to Mountain Lion or Mavericks the machine must meet the requirements in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842.
At any rate, the new owner must install Snow Leopard on that machine before any move to one of the Mac App Store versions of Mac OS X.

How do I update the operating system in an ipad2?

I suggest that you don't, the new operating system stinks.  But if you want too, go to settings, general, and then software update.  If your iPad will support it, it will update.

  • How do I disactivate the operating system on my macbook that was stolen from me?

So in early September someone who I know broke into my apartment and stole my computer, I called the police and filed a report. I have some very snesitive documents on the computer that I would prefer no one to get their hands on. I was able to find the operating system disk I had purchsed to update the operating system a few years ago so I have all of the information associated with the OS. I do not know the IP address of the computer or exactly where it is (obviously or I would have it back). I want to basically turn the OS off so my files on the computer cannot be opened or used. Is there any way to disactivate the OS remotely like you can with Windows (if you use the product key on another PC it deactivates the previous version). I don't know if it matters but it was a late 2006 macbook (black) model 13" screen.

  • I have a MacBook Pro and a Canon MX452. I updated the operating system on my MacBook to Yosemite 10.

I own a Canon MX452 and a MacBook Pro (2010 model). This week I updated the MacBook operating system to Yosemite 10.10.3. Afterwards I found the printer / scanner functions would not work. I re-loaded the CD from the printer and was also prompted to download more currrent drivers from the Canon website, from which I chose the ICA Driver V4.0.0 and the Canon IJ Network Tool V4.5.0 (not sure if these were the right ones or not).
I managed to only get the printer working when using the USB cable to the printer. I could not get the printer and scanner working wirelessly. The printer blue light shows it is connected to my network ok. I also noted my iPad and iPhone can no longer "see" the printer either.
I have deleted and re-loaded the Canon software several times. I have followed Canon instructions to:
-Connect the MacBook to the router with an ethernet cable and go through the instructions to "connect" the Canon MX452. But afterwards, the MacBook says the Canon MX452 is "off line" and I can only make it work with the USB connection.
Any guidance would me most appreciated to:
-get the printer and scanner working wirelessly
-getting the Air-Print feature working with the iPad and iPhone
    Thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi John. Thanks for that input. At Step 6, after clicking "Next" I get a window telling me my OS version is unsupported and the installation may not complete. I am prompted to go to Canon's web site to "Check Latest Info".
I've had this window on previous attempts and from Canon's web site I downloaded two drivers as follows
    - ICA Driver V4.0.0
    - Canon IJ Network Tool V4.5.0
I'm not sure if these are the correct / complete drivers I need for this install or not.
I continue to follow all the steps. At step 9 I click "Wireless Set Up using USB" amd get a License Agreement (a little different than instructions)
I click "Agree" and it goes to a Setup window with two progress bars showing the installation. I've not been prompted to connect the USB?
After the Setup window is done, I am then prompted to connect the printer via USB. I connect the printer and click on "Redetect". It is not detected.
I then try following the Canon on screen instructions for connecting to the wireless LAN amd enter the password. It searches and indicates "Connecting" on the window, but it never connects and the blue light just blinks
So, at this point I am stuck??
    Thanks
    Stephen

  • How do I download the new software for my macbook pro (I currently have the 10.5.8 software) when it doesn't come up in software updates in my system preferences?

I just bought a new iphone 5 and when i plugged my phone it to the computer it told me i needed the new itunes so i downloaded it and then the new itunes wouldn't open without the software 10.6.8 or later. I have the 10.5.8 software. How do I downlowd the new software. It doesn't come up on software updates either.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
An iPhone 5 needs iTunes 11, and iTunes 11 requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, so upgrading to Snow Leopard will work.
First, check if your Mac is supported > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 If it's supported, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Then, you have to make a Time Machine backup and/or a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner onto an external disk. After that, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard, so insert the DVD and upgrade.
The DVD will install Mac OS X 10.6.3, so open  > Software Update and install 10.6.8. You may need to run Software Update again in order to install iTunes 11

  • What is the operating system on my MacBook Pro

I am trying to find out whether I have Lion, Tiger. Leopard etc on my MacBook.  My Mail is configured to appear on my Blackberry phone, which is fine but if I compose an e-mail in Mail on my Macbook it appears several time (up to 50) on my Blackberry which I then have to laboriously have to delete.  My internet provider have asked me to identify what my operating system is but all I can find out is that it is Mac OSX Version 10.6.7.  If anyone has any idea how to rectify this problem it would be helpful as well.
    Many thanks

Hi Linc, many thanks for your reply, my internet provider told me that there have been a few problems with the new operating system Lion, but I don't have that, they also said that if I hadn't got Lion then I would have to remove the account from my MacBook and set it up again.  When I first got my MacBook a few months ago it did it all for me.  They have given me instructions on how to do this so fingers crossed!!

  • How do I choose the right HD for my macbook pro 13"?

It has a 250gb SATA 5400rpm drive already.  I want something WAAAYY bigger.  I just want to make sure it is the right size and can copy over my old hd.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present OS X boot partition (no Bootcamp or Filevault) to a blank external drive, you can hold the option key down and boot from this clone.
    Make the drive switch
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Boot from the clone and use Disk Utility to Erase the drive with the Zero or (on 10.7) the next to last option on the right to map off any bad sectors on the drive. (takes some time but worth it)
Then use CCC to reverse clone and reboot normally.

Do you see a half moon icon in the upper right corner of the screen? If so, you have Do Not Disturb enabled. Settings>Do Not Disturb. Turn it off.
Or do you have system sounds muted?
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center. Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.
