I see Barney-15E made suggestions regarding Chrome preferences. There's also a setting on the Mac to deal with this. Regarding the drop-down menus not seeming to scroll through (such as a list of states)--where when you place or click your cursor over the drop-down menu and it only opens to some of the options in a list, I found that you have to change the scroll bar behavior in your computer's (and not the browser's) General Preferences within your System Preferences.
Open System Preferences, and click on "General" inside the top row of "Personal Preferences" (as it is in my system with Mountain Lion, and I think prior operating systems before that).
Once inside General Preferences, select the radio button option for your scroll bar which you'd like to use in the "Show scroll bar:" section ("Automatically based on mouse or trackpad," "When scrolling," or "Always." If you're using a mouse and not a trackpad, you'd probably want to select "Always" as it takes swiping over the drop-down list on the trackpad to enable (make visible) the scroll bar and/or scroll the list.
Either with the installation of Mountain Lion, or the installation of my trackpad (I'm using a desktop iMac and not a Macbook / laptop) I found that the righthand scroll bars seem to automatically disappear. When I moused over or clicked on a drop-down menu (such as the list of states) I'd see only the first few options in the list. In order to access the rest of the states (get the list to scroll) you have to either have the scroll bar setting set to show "Always" or (if you have a trackpad) use the trackpad to swipe/scroll while hovering your cursor over the list's items to get it to scroll the list, and thus then show/reveal the lefthand scroll bar (which can then be accessed with your mouse if you prefer.
This confused me at first when my scroll bars seemed to disappear, but was an easy fix.

Yours is the first computer I've heard about on these forums that is attempting to run Mavericks with only 2GB of RAM.

I suggest therefore you make sure you remove any applications that may be overtaxing your machine. Examples are browsers other than Safari, Mac cleaning products (such as Mac Keeper), or any other non-Apple app that has some startup process running (such as Outlook).

yes you can do it yourself - it's actually a simple upgrade - i use a ssd in my macbook and have the RAM maxed out to 16GB.
as for what brands should you consider, here are some good ones.
Sandisk Extreme - Currently the fastest one out there.
Kingston HyperX - Second fastest - this is what I have in my 13 Inch Late 2011.
Samsung 830 series - Fast and uses less battery power - this is what's installed in the Macbook Retina.
Crucial M4 - Also a fast SSD - I have the 512GB installed in my 15 inch Late 2011.
If you decide to install one of these ssd in your Macbook - let me know if you need a step by step on how to clone your drive.

Can't Run SPSS with Mountain Lion

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and then installed SPSS 21. I am unable to get SPSS to work and I receive the following error message when I start the program: Serialization scheme was not recognized inet:Local Computer:0.
I then get presented with a popup window asking me to specify my server login: local computer.
Might anyone have any suggestions to fix this problem. I have been unsuccessful checking the SPSS support documents and just looking around the web, and my campus IT support hasn't had anything to offer.
Some further notes:
SPSS 20 did not work after I upgraded to Mountain Lion, but SPSS states that version 20 is not fully compatible with Mountain Lion and users should upgrade to version 21.
Another discussion thread regarding difficulties with starting SPSS suggested creating a new user with Administrator priviliges and running SPSS under that user. This solution has not worked for me. Likewise, another suggestion of starting SPSS from terminal mode has not solved my difficulties.

I updated my mid 2011 mac mini to mountian lion and i find Preview and all of MS Office 2011 for MAC fails to work

I installed Windows XP into Bootcamp on my 2009 MacBook Pro (either in Leopard or Snow Leopard, I do not remember which) and I used it with Parallels 6.
When I upgraded it to Lion, even though the Lion Bootcamp will NOT install Windows XP, my Bootcamp (and use by Parallels 7) survived the upgrade.
It may be possible that it will also survive and operate a future upgrade to Mountain Lion.

My late 2008 Macbook Pro is running hot with Mountain Lion

I've seen a few messages on here and on other sites about people's MBP's running about 5 to 10degC hotter after installing Mountain Lion.
I've had Mountain Lion for a good 5 days and I've seen no improvement. I've fixed permissions using Onyx, I've reset the PRAM and the SMC and I've also gone through all of my apps to update any that do not run on Mountain Lion.
No improvement.
As I sit here now and type, my MBP is running at 66degC and the fan is at 3000rpm.....I then use smc control to ramp the fan up to 6000rpm.....the temperature drops to around 62degC.....I then set the fanspeed to default. About 2 minutes later, the temperature increases and the fan automatically ramps up again to around 3000rpm. Ive also updated Adobe Flash.
I only have Transmission and Safari open - that's it. Nothing else.
Does anybody have any idea how to resolve this issue or do I need to hold tight and wait for Apple to acknowledge it and issue a corrective patch? Or simply, is it that my machine is on it's deathbed? It worked okay with Lion!
I am almost convinced that Apple are upgrading these new OSX in a way so that we all have to keep going out and buying new MBP's - this isn't going to happen. I will downgrade back to Lion, and then Snow Leopard, if I have to. I will get my full money's worth with this laptop, and then I might consider going back to Windows.....

First step I take is to make a list of the Apps I have installed that I want in the new setup as well as any irreplaceable folder/files you do not want to lose. Pretty much everything you need is in your User folder but creating the full bootable image will create a copy of everything on your hard drive just incase. A full image with CCC or SuperDuper can also be used to get your system back to square one if things go bad. Time Machine is also a good source to recover data, but I would use one of the other programs so you'll have multiple backups I found it also works best if you use the exact same user name on the new system to prevent file permissions issues.
Read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2980 for the important stuff. It is out dated but still applies in Lion. iCloud also makes short work out of this as well. On first boot ML asks for your Apple ID, if you are using iCloud syncing Contacts, Calendars/Reminders, Notes and Safari Bookmarks will automatically get restored. All I had to do was replace my email folders and preference files for the hard stuff. On top of that copying from the back up your Documents folder, the Music/iTunes folder is all that is needed for iTunes and Pictures/iPhoto Library restored my iPhoto pictures.
Then go out onto the net and download fresh installs for any third party apps you may use. A quick Google search will generally find any data or other files you need to recover that may be hidden in the file system. It sounds tougher than it is and once you've done it it will be much quicker and easier down the road when you have to do it again. I'm sure I missed lot of info here but check and double check that you have all the data you want back on your new setup before wiping any of your back up drives, give it a few weeks before you commit the drives to backing up your new system.

IMac 21.5" 2010 Running Hot with Mountain Lion

I have a 2010 iMac i3 with 8GB RAM that I clean installed Mountain Lion on and the thing gets hot (very hot to the touch on the outside) very fast doing ordinary tasks (email, browsing the internet using Safari or Chrome, calendar). Temperatures on the hard drive typically stay below 50C but the power supply specifically can reach 75-80C when running full screen HD video (GPU will be around 55-60C at this time as well). The fans will increase to about 1500rpm for heavy loads and then go back to around 1000-1200rpm during normal tasks. I feel like Snow Leopard did not run this hot and perhaps because of all the iCloud and Notification Center processes running behind the scenes, ML may just require far more power than SL. Honestly, I'm really considering just going back to SL all together as I don't use much of the iCloud stuff.
Has anyone else noticed their iMac's running hotter after installing ML? I realize that it will run hot for up to a week after install because of Spotlight. I installed ML the day it came out, so it's been quite a while. I would really appreciate any feedback.

Immediately after installing Mountain Lion, your system will be rebuilding the Spotlight index. This should only take a couple of hours at most. If the problem persists you can run diagnostics. Mail running slow with Mountain Lion

It seems that the Mail application has slowed significantly since upgrading to Mountain Lion with frequent lags when attempting to swith email accounts. My iMac also is very slow to respond after being idle for a significant period. Are others experiencing these issues with the new OS?

Cannot run Java with Firefox

I have tried anything for 5 hours and nothing works.
New dell laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bits.
Firefox version: 37.0a1 (2014-12-05).
Install Java twice via jxpiinstall.exe and jre-8u25-windows-i586-iftw.exe. 32 bits version.
Java test page https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp reports that 'java is disabled or not installed'.
Java console shows that Java is enabled for browsers.
DOS Command line 'java -version' shows java running.
I have even put the 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_25' in the global PATH variable and created a JAVA_HOME variable with this directory.
I went into regedit and change the rights on all mozilla mozilla.org keys.
Finally, I downloaded Chrome and it works after some configuration.

Finally, I could find a page to download a previous version.
I downloaded Firefox Setup 33.1.1.exe and installed it. It immediately donwloaded the right plugins.
I configured the Java(TM) Platform SE 8 U25 plugin to be always activated and I went to the Java test page https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and now it works.
I will try with updated version, but it is clear that this Nightly version has a problem with Windows 8.1

The subject of buying/selling a Mac is quite complicated. Here is a guide to the steps involved. It is from the Seller's point of view, but easily read the other way too:
SELLING A MAC A
Internet Recovery, and Transferability of OS & iLife Apps
Selling an Old Mac:
• When selling an old Mac, the only OS that is legally transferable is the one that came preinstalled when the Mac was new. Selling a Mac with an upgraded OS isn't doing the new owner any favors. Attempting to do so will only result in headaches since the upgraded OS can't be registered by the new owner. If a clean install becomes necessary, they won't be able to do so and will be forced to install the original OS via Internet Recovery. Best to simply erase the drive and revert back to the original OS prior to selling any Mac.
• Additionally, upgrading the OS on a Mac you intend to sell means that you are leaving personally identifiable information on the Mac since the only way to upgrade the OS involves using your own AppleID to download the upgrade from the App Store. So there will be traces of your info and user account left behind. Again, best to erase the drive and revert to the original OS via Internet Recovery.
Internet Recovery:
• In the event that the OS has been upgraded to a newer version (i.e. Lion to Mountain Lion), Internet Recovery will offer the version of the OS that originally came with the Mac. So while booting to the Recovery Disk will show Mountain Lion as available for reinstall since that is the current version running, Internet Recovery, on the other hand, will only show Lion available since that was the OS shipped with that particular Mac.
• Though the Mac came with a particular version of Mac OS X, it appears that, when Internet Recovery is invoked, the most recent update of that version may be applied. (i.e. if the Mac originally came with 10.7.3, Internet Recovery may install a more recent update like 10.7.5)
iLife Apps:
• When the App Store is launched for the first time it will report that the iLife apps are available for the user to Accept under the Purchases section. The user will be required to enter their AppleID during the Acceptance process. From that point on the iLife apps will be tied to the AppleID used to Accept them. The user will be allowed to download the apps to other Macs they own if they wish using the same AppleID used to Accept them.
• Once Accepted on the new Mac, the iLife apps can not be transferred to any future owner when the Mac is sold. Attempting to use an AppleID after the apps have already been accepted using a different AppleID will result in the App Store reporting "These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID".
• It appears, however, that the iLife Apps do not automatically go to the first owner of the Mac. It's quite possible that the original owner, either by choice or neglect, never Accepted the iLife apps in the App Store. As a result, a future owner of the Mac may be able to successfully Accept the apps and retain them for themselves using their own AppleID. Bottom Line: Whoever Accepts the iLife apps first gets to keep them.
SELLING A MAC B
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
side.
4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
4. Install OS X.
5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
6. Shutdown the computer.
B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
Utilities window appears.
2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

That underpowered model is better left on 10.6.8 for performance reasons, also the fact that it's dated and 10.7 will likely require you to buy alll new software to replace the PPC based software your currently using.
If you insist, then call Apple via phone and they will sell you 10.7 Lion and provide a link to download it.
My 2¢ is to save up for a new machine, as that one is about to kick the bucket, they only last about 4.5 years or so depending upon use/enviroment.
If your having problems with 10.6.8, perhaps some of the links here can assist, 10.6 is faster than 10.7 in fresh install tests.

It is a Total Misconception that the Support files are installed when you are installing Windows, even if the USB drive that holds them is inserted in the system when doing the Windows install.
You must always Run the Setup.exe files from the support files or run the drivers individually once Windows has finished installing and booted to the desktop.
Also you really need to run the Boot Camp Control Panel Applet and check for updates as not all the newest drivers for full function of all the hardware is included with the original support download. That download is basically a generic version to get the system working and without doing the updates not everything will work properly.

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the slowness still occurs?
Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.
Reboot normally and test.
