Hi Imminnie,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPod touch, this article may help:

If issues persist, a thorough removal and reinstall of iTunes would be the next thing to try:

  • IPod Touch 2nd generation not being recognized / charging through iTunes

I am having issues with my 2nd gen iPod Touch being recognized in iTunes or Windows.  I have tried multiple computers with no luck (Windows XP and 7).
Here is what is going on.
iPod is not recognized through computer or iTunes
iPod doesn't charge through computer or a wall charger, however, will charge through a seperate speaker dock. (this seems odd that it will charge on a dock, but not through the wall charger or computer).
Each time the iPod is plugged into the computer with Windows XP, I get a message that the USB device is not recognized.  I get no message when plugged into Windows 7.
Here are the steps I tried to fix the issue.
used multiple cables, 3 in all.  My iPhone 3gs works fine and is recognzied with all cables / computers.
reset the device numerous times and re-started computers.
Uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled with no luck.
I'm reaching out into the community to see if anyone has had similiar issues and looking for advice to solving this problem.
Thanks for your help and responses.

Slightly different contact configuratio in the dock might allow charging nly on the dock.
If you can't straight out the contacts:
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours. However, it may not be worth it for the old 2G iPod.

A third-party place like the following is less. Google for more.
    http://www.iresq.com/ipod-repair/ipod-touch-2.html
but may not be worth it for a 2G
But may not be worth the $69 plus shipping for the old 2G iPod

  • So i have an iPod touch 2nd generation, i want to update it but when i plug it in to any computer it just says that it is not recognized, then the home button is all jacked up and it doesnt resopnd right away and goes awire latter what can i do?

i dont know what to do, can you help me? can i download an ios off my iPod and why is my home button messed up???

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
Where it says place the iPod in recovery mode use this program:
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My iPod Touch doesn't show up in finder or iTunes when connected to my iMac. Help!

I have completely updated everything; uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of iTunes...just about everything but do a headstand... what is next?

Open up the the Finder app. Then go to the Go tab at the top.  Then select Go to Folder near the bottom of the menu that opens when you go to the Go tab.

  • Problems syncing iPod Touch (2nd generation) with iMac under Mountain Lion

When syncing my iPod Touch (2nd generation) with my iMac (under Mountain Lion) the entries in my diaries/agendas do not sync. Apps and music sync without a problem. What must I do?

I have this problem.. and after spending time at the Genius Bar yesterday, I discovered that my old ipod touch is obsolete..( the Ipod touch is a 32.bit system, while the newer operating system is 64... so they're simply not compatible.)
I expressed great dismay that my perfectly good ipod touch was now obsolete...  then the genius suggested I export my contacts and calendars to Google..
That was easy to do, and then, on the Google community forum i learned about nuevasync.com, which lets you synch all of this back to your ipod touch via Exchange.
    WOrked like a charm.
Nuevasync. com is free for an initial trial (10 days?) and then costs only 15$ per YEAR.. so I'll use this as a good work-around

  • Why dont they make IOS 5 for ipod touch 2nd generation

this is crap they shouldn't stop updateing the ipod touch 2nd generation like what they did to the first. i dont want to keep buying a new ipod touch every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like any other device that uses software, the older hardware cannot run the newest software.
This is completely normal in every way.
You do  not have to buy every year.  The 3rd gen was released two and a half years ago and can run ios 5.
How many years should it be?

  • HT1222 How can i still update my ipod touch 2nd generation?

How can i still update my ipod touch 2nd generation, does the apple website still provide these older iOS updates?

You can upgrade your iPod on itunes to the most recent software it willl support. Anything past that won't work on your device.

If still no luck, try a low level format of the iPod using Disk Utility and the instructions provided in this article.

  • I have an ipod touch 2nd generation.I want to purchase games from the app store like Temple Run but it says I can't.Is there a way to update this ipod?

I have an Ipod Touch 2nd generation. I bought a Itunes card and when I went to add game apps(like Temple Run) to my Ipod it said I couldn't.Is there a way to upgrade this ipod without having to buy a new one to be able to play the games?

You can update it to 4.2.1
Open itunes, connect ipod.  If there is an update available, then it will prompt you to update.

  • The speakers on my iPod Touch 2nd generation stopped working.

The speakers on my iPod Touch 2nd generation stopped working.  The volume doesn't even register - can't turn it up or down.  On occasion the headphones will work when plugged in.  Turned it off and on, tried reset, nothing works.  I bought it second hand so no AppleCare. What can I do?

Try restoring the iPod via iTunes on your computer.  First from backup and if problem persists restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • My current laptop is about 3 years old. Got a virus and had to wipe it clean. Now my IPod touch 2nd generation won't recognize this computer as the one it was originally assigned to.  what do I need to do to safeguard my tunes on the Ipod touch.

My current laptop is about three years old and got a virus.  Had to wipe it clean.  Now my Ipod Touch-2nd generation is not recognizing it as the primary original computer and says it is registered on another computer.  What can I do to safeguard my library of songs on the Ipodtouch.  Any suggestions?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • My Ipod Touch 2nd Generation Froze And Is Trying To Install ALL Of My Apps!

A few hours ago my ipod touch 2nd generation froze, and then it took about 15 minutes to unfreeze. Now it's working very slow. I soon realized that it's trying to istall ALL of my apps I've downloaded since I got my ipod. I had to attempt to shut off the wifi so it would stop. right now over 25 apps are on Pause. I don't want to restore my ipod because I last did a backup about a few months ago. My computer is out of memory, and it's a very slow computer. I recently send an email to apple because of an issue I had with two missing itunes store purchases that it deleted off of my ipod when I connected it with itunes. They never emailed me back and it's been over 24 hours. Could apple be attempting to send me back ALL of the things I've purchased and downloaded with my account? If they are, IT'S NOT FUNNY

    - First try restoring from backup
    - If problem persists, restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If still a problem you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
