I get a message "The Itunes server could not be contacted, check your internet connection" when trying to check for Ipod Nano software updates. I have a 1st generation Nano and haven't updated the software for a while. My internet connection is working. Was thre a change in the internet address for NANO software updates? Do I have to reconfigure something in Itunes to point to the correct address?
What version of iTunes are you using? The latest is 10.6.3. In iTunes, choose Help -> About iTunes to check the version number. If it's lower than 10.6.3, download the latest version from here.

We were able to fix our machine! I just could not make sense of the error message, so we were trying non-Microsoft, non-Apple solutions.
Our Solution: Install MalWareBytes, and run a Quick Scan.
Even thought both Microsoft anti-virus and Defender were running on our Windows 8 machine, MalWareBytes found about 100 problems. As I looked over the types of problem and locations, I found several that referenced the exact directory referenced in this message. The machine had to be restarted for MalWareBytes to complete the cleaning, but iTunes installed afterwards with no problems.

I have completed the steps given to me to have my iphone 5 no longer be disabled. I have completed the steps multiple times but my computer continues to say "The Iphone spftware update server could not be contacted." I have officially ran out of patience and I am in need of some assistance. I have never disabled my Iphone before and i am having some difficulties trying to get it restored. Every time I try to check for updates I get this message across my screen.

After which it informs me the user could not be connected.

I'm trying to restore an iPod touch that has been locked forever and I can't remember the passcode. When I connect the iPod to iTunes, and hit the restore button, I get a message that says "The iTunes software server could not be contacted." Then below that is says to make sure that my network settings are correct, which I've done, and that the connection is active, which it is.

Please help! I'm using a windows 7 laptop. The iTunes store is not displaying images, and if I try to import a CD it will not access the gracenote database for track info.Tried updating but got the error message 'the itunes update server could not be contacted'. I'm accessing the internet via a Tmobile dongle and all other web content is working . I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, checked my driver are up to date and that my AVG firewall allows iTunes through.I have disabled the windows firewall.I tried disabling the AVG one completely too but that had no effect so I'm stuck - can anyone help?
Not sure if you already fixed this problem or not, but I recently upgraded my laptop to Win7 and ran into the same issue. My Internet connection was working fine, I could even browse the store within iTunes, just couldn't download any software or firmware updates. I fixed it by editing the "hosts" file located in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder. Open it in notepad with admin rights (right click notepad & select "Run as administrator"). Uncomment (delete the hash symbol "#") the last 2 lines or the ones that consist of "127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost". Restart iTunes and see if this works (if you haven't already found a solution).

My firewall (both anti virus firewall and windows firewall, are set up to allow itunes programme to work) - I also have set both internet explorer and chrome to allow
apple website as an exception.

When I was updating my child's ipod touch with itunes....it put the ipod in recovery mode and said I would need to restore and then update....which was my only option to choose, so when I chose restore & update....after going thru it seemed the process, then a window came up that stated the ipod couldn't be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable and to try again. After trying this several times unsuccessfuly and going thru the steps on the help section, the ipod is still not able to restore & update, thus we can't access anything on our very new ipod touch and I am very frustrated, can't afford any Apple support tech time. I got a new ipod touch for Christmas.
Today I was going to put music on it, i was told there was updates.
So I went ahead to do them.
My Ipod is stuck on the screen with the usb cord pointing to the itunes logo.
In Itunes i'm told :
Itunes has dected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes.
Turning the ipod off - the same screen appears when it's back on.
When I click restore ipod and after restore and update is clicked ; Extracting software loads up at the top.
When its done this is the message I get:
The iPod 'iPod' cannot be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.
I've been looking up trying to figure it out myself and have read making sure a setting in Lan Settings in Internet Properties has ; Automatically detect settings checked. I still get the same ipod message.
I've tried holding the power and home key to turn it off, then powering it back on. But that doesn't work.
I installed itunes today, so its up to date - I checked.
I don't know what else to do.

Select the hosts file (normally you can find your hosts file at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC).

ITunes: "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted"
Could someone please help me with a problem that I´m having with iTunes that´s really annoying. I want to update my iPhone 3G with the latest 3.0 software. For the first time ever iTunes is giving me the following message every time I try to update (been for more than 24 hours now):
+The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.+
I also get a message if I try to click on the update itunes( not that I need to, as it updated to iTunes 8.2 earlier this month) but still I figure it´s all part of the same problem:

Solutions tried so far:
* Going through my internet connection settings - I´m connected to the internet with no problems!
* Changing from wifi to wired connection - same thing, can´t update
* Reinstalling itunes (twice) - no difference
* Switching off Netbarrier
I don´t know what else I can do. I´m beginning to think it may be related to either iTunes being updated to 8.2 or one of the many recent software updates apple has been sending us of Mac OS. My computer is got all recent updates.

Anyway I tried naming a new location and no success and I don´t really understand the last post in that thread. There is no "check for updates" under the help menu. It's only in the itunes menu and that´s what I keep trying to do with the same message.
Anyway it's clear to me now that it's not a local connection issue nor an iPhone server issue. I've since upgraded to the 3.0 software via a Windows PC without any problems and without having to sync all the music and stuff which is a relief. Afterwards, when I put it back into my Mac all it asked me to do was a backup and nothing else had been synced (or wiped) so the immediate problem is out of the way. It's just this remaining issue now that iTunes still won´t connect to update servers although it does connects to the itunes store all ok. Any other ideas before I call Apple on Monday? -

If you're still around I hope you see this message, as you're the FIRST person (after reading every link, thread, other sites, apple support articles, etc.) to mention JB may be causing this iTunes popup window to REPEATEDLY occur:
"The iPhone software update server could not be contacted."
No, I did not hack anything (are you kidding? Grannies don't hack!), but I unknowingly bought a 3Gs iOS 3.1 from ebay that was not advertised as JB. Since it is like brand new, I was going to keep it (because my old backup is iOS 3.1.2) & was trying to simply restore & update, which (I thought) would remove the JB (that's what everybody says at forums, etc).
Instead, after "erasing all settings/content" (inside phone's Settings to get the prior person's name out of there), it is now stuck in White Apple Mode.
Put it in DFU/Recovery Mode & connect to iTunes but that stupid above message keeps appearing & I have already read/tried EVERYTHING to get rid of that message, starting with:
1. OLD phones (3Gs) with OLD iOS 3.1+ should work FINE with OLD Mac (iBook) with OLD OSX (Tiger 10.4.11) with OLD iTunes (9.2.1[5]). So that can't be the problem.
Here's all the other things apple & others say to check which I already checked:
2. USB ports are FINE, both work FINE, so that's not the problem.
3. No "extra USB devices" are connected, ONLY a mouse, & then the phone (yes, I tried it w/o the mouse connected but that didn't help).
4. No "usb hubs."
5. Latest iTunes for this OSX has already been DL'd (iTunes 9.2.1[5]). If you know of a newer one for this OSX, please advise.
6. No antivirus software.
7. No security software.
8. No routers; only 1 comcast modem, period. Wired Ethernet.
9. No wifi gadgets, no wifi at all.
10. No firewalls, except what is on iBook in the SHARING/System-Prefs. section. It's turned OFF.
11. Did the hosts/terminal thing sudo nano whatever it was. There were only 3 lines, NO gs.apple.com:
xxxxx local host
xxxxx broadcast host
xxxx local host
Oh, & btw, ATT officially unlocked this phone (after I filled out their online forms) but I can't finish the process via iTunes to get their Confirmation that "Device is Now Unlocked," so I can use T-Mo.
So that's it. If you have any other ideas of what to do from here, since from your comment, maybe it's the stupid JB on this phone that is causing the problem (???), please advise.
