HT1498 What has happened to movie rental in 1st gen Apple TV as the option has disappeared ?
Apple TV now only shows my movies and trailers. Does not seem to want to connect to iTunes Store. Is this Apple shutting down 1st gen Apple TV ?
I suspect what you are ssing is a symptom of a wide-spread issue with ATV's right now [though looks to be primarily Gen 1 units]. There's an existing topic here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25524317#25524317
Another thread suggested to click "I have this question too" in the thread above, and identify the generation of your device in a reply (As it may affect other generations as well.), so that it's all collected in one place.I was aslo suggested to submit the bug via the feedback page https://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
Looks like Apple sent out a Bad Easter Egg for us 1st gen'rs, but they appear to be working on it. At the very least they are aware of the issue. I doubt it was deliberate as there was no official notice of discontinuation of support.

hi i have the 1st gen apple tv and suddenly when trying to rent a movie i don't see the rental interface. i did a factory restore and now i see movie trailors and my movies but not rental option. any idea what could be wrong??
Judging by all the posts on the forum, there seems to be an issue at Apple's end, although they have made no announcement on their status page. Some users have reported that Apple is aware of the issue. You can leave feedback for Apple at the link below.

I just backed up my mac to an external hard drive using Time Machine. What would happen if I turn Time Machine off and then plug the external hard drive back into my computer?
What I am ultimately wanting to do is make more room on my computer by backing up all of my files onto the external hard drive and then deleting them off of my computer. However, neededing to be able to retrieve them from the external hard drive later down the road.
From what I have read and am trying to understand, is that I probably shouldn't have used time machine. I need to use the external hard drive like a basic flash drive where I can put things on and get things off without having it automatically update through time machine everytime I connect it to my computer.

The number of people who have experienced terror by having a single external HD backup is enormous. One failure that WILL HAPPEN, and kaput,......all gone!

Deleting them off your computer is fine....having only ONE copy is extremely BAD.

Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret. -

The app has been deleted from everywhere !If the app is no longer in the store then you won't be able to redownload it. You don't have a copy of it in your computer's iTunes library or on your backup of your downloads/library so that you can sync it back to your phone ?

plug and play. well that is a windows term.. Apple decided they didn't need uPnP on the Time Capsule because that is just so windows.. so they use there own system.. called NAT-PMP.. (port mapping protocol). Just to make sure that things like playstation, xbox, etc could not open ports properly. And windows machines of course should be excluded from playing.

"simple english".. unfortunately networking requires the use of a fair number of terms people are just unfamiliar with.
The big lie was computers and networking are easy. Computers in isolation might be fine.. but as soon as you link things in networks.. it gets much harder.. and people who do study for a couple of years just to diploma level in networking haven't done it because they are dumb and could have read the simple english manual overnight. But because it is complex.
I try and explain it this way.. if your washing machine goes bung, do you start pulling it to pieces and trying to find the fault.. or do you call the washing machine repairman.. who has trained to fix washing machines.
If your computer or networking goes bad.. then "who are you going to call?" The manufacturer and complain about how hard it is to setup a $100 piece of equipment and expect them to give two hours of hand holding for free on the phone. People would never call a computer support technician.. no this is easy.. it is in simple english somewhere.. and you only need to spend an hour and all will be fine. Even though you have as much training in networking as in washing machine repairs. Would you call the washing machine manufacturer and expect 2 hours of free phone support for you to strip down their washing machine.. after all it cost 6x times what the router cost?? Or has some strange lie grabbed hold of you that this is simple. -
I have a single Pixel that is broke on my 2 month old retina macbook pro. I have Apple care. What will Happen if I bring it to an apple store.
You can try to see if they will replace it, however there is some sort of acceptable amount of stuck pixels and they won't replace so I hear.

Reset the network settings in Settings/General/Reset and you'll be able again to put in your password.
Remember that this will reset the passwords for all networks you connected to up to this point. -
On my TV, I can access my library and view movie rental trailers but when I actually order the movie, it says unable to access server. Any ideas?

I returned my 14 month old 3rd Gen Apple TV to the Apple store today because it would no longer see my wireless network. Apple said that because of this problem, it was still covered under warranty, and gave me a new one. Took it home and went through all the setup screens. Even downloaded the latest software update. Everything else appears to be working fine, but I can't rent a movie in SD like I used to be able to. Everything I've read says that the settings is where I change that, but the one setting that I did find and change, under audio and visual, made no difference. What am I missing?
Thanks!This problem has been solved by me. The settings under the Apple TV menu for audio/visual do adjust for the output to your screen either 1080 or 720, but don't have any effect on the iTunes purchases.
The solution is under the Apple TV menu option "iTunes Store". There you can choose from 1080 HD, 720 HD or 720 SD. Now my movie selections in iTunes do offer the SD option. -
Under "movies" on my ATV (and on Front Row app.) I have movies and/or slideshows that I didn't add, and want to remove them. Conversely I recently created a movie of family photos with music on iMovie, moved to iDVD then saved as an img extension. I burned DVDs without problems. I would like to move it to "movies" on my 1st Gen ATV for showing, but haven't been able to do it. Can you advise me of the procedure to accomplish this, both removing unwanted movies and adding wanted movies to the ATV. Thank you.
Hi!
Open your project in iMovie. Click on "share" at the top of the screen. When the menu appears, click on "share to iTunes". You will get a menu asking you to pick what size you want. Go for the large size for the ATV. When it's done sharing, (may take awhile depending on how long the movie is) if your ATV is set to auto synch new content, it will copy over right away. If not, you can manually synch it, or just stream it. Hope that helps!

I finally got my ipod touch (5g) n was able to restore it on itunes but the problem is it requires the apple id that the thief has linked to it n its password for me to set it up...is there other way to set my ipod up without entering the thief's apple id n password??

How do I get a movie purchased on my 3rd gen Apple TV to play on my 1st gen Apple TV?
I purchased and watched a move on my 3rd gen Apple TV a few weeks ago. Now I want to watch it in another room where I have an older HD based Apple TV (1st gen I think). When I look in iTunes on my computer, I can see that it's listed as being available in my account in the cloud. I can't see it from my older Apple TV. I don't want to have to keep this on my computer given it's size (5GB), so the solution of downloading to my PC and syncing isn't too attractive.
AppleTV 1 is not aware of movies in the cloud so your only option to get the movie onto there is to download the HD version to iTunes and sync or buy it again direct on AppleTV.
You may be able to do a manual sync, then delete from iTunes but next time you sync if the item is not in itunes it will likely go from ATV1.
Remember ATV1 will not play the 1080p HD version as it maxes out for video decoding with teh 720p ones even thouigh it can be set up for 1080p upscaled output.
Have you considered keeping larger items on an external drive ? You can mix and match locations for media in various ways eg with smaller music files on the main hard drive (eg laptop) and larger video files on an external only available for playback or syncing when plugged in.
