If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

Are you able to start up in Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
If this works you will see the normal desktop Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless it has been renamed). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

Not a solution yet, but received the following from one of the tech people I've been e-mailing back & forth with.
"I'm sorry that you have been unable to submit your podcast. The podcast submission form is currently offline. When trying to submit the podcast you will receive this message "We are Currently Experienced Technical Difficulties". Once the issue has been resolved, I would be glad to inform you.
Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available."
Who knows, maybe the problem isn't with my feed after all.

Well, unless someone else chips in here to help, your other option is to contact Apple's technical support. Their U.K. phone no. is: (44) 0870 876 0753
I could be wrong, but as I understand it, if you've never contacted Apple before for the particular Mac you're calling about, then your 90 days of complimentary phone support will begin from your very first call.
Here is the "Contacting Apple Support and Service" page:

...and the phone numbers are here:

After restarting my iMac 20" 2.4 GHz Intel coreDuo, I have a grey screen with a folder with a question mark on it. What should I do to repair my disk?

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer was running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier and you reach the third set of steps, insert a Mac OS X install disk.

  • Brand new SSD. Old drive went bad and no back-up. How do I go about formatting etc. with the new drive. I get a failed message when trying to partition or erase new drive to format.

Installed a new SSD as my other blew it's age. I have no back-up and need to format the new one. I go in and either partition or erase and get and error message. Please help.

    Zachy,
    It goes something like this...
Put your new drive in the enclosure. Use Disk Utility to format it, etc. I'd give it a slightly different name than the original. Let's say you have Old Disk and New Disk as your drive names. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Old Disk to New Disk. Now you should have an exact copy, which you can test by rebooting and holding down the Option key. Choose New Disk from the list and let it boot, make sure all is well.
Shut down and physically swap the drives. Take Old Disk and put it in the enclosure. Now your system has a new disk with a lot more space and you can reformat your old disk and just use it for large files or whatever.

Trying to back up my mac to update the OS.  Just bought a new external drive, and when launching thru time machine I get the "could not unmount disc" error.   The .dmg (macinstall) quit's unexpectedly too, so I can't launch it either way.

  • What does it mean when there is a flashing file folder with a question mark when trying to start computer?

When I try to start my computer a flashing file folder with a question mark is on the screen. I can't open anything up. What does this mean?

There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from its location.

  • When trying to set up my time machine I get this message:  Airport Utility was unable to find any airport wireless devices.  I am connected to the internet.  What's the problem?

I'm trying to set up my time capsule.  I'm having trouble. Please help

    Hi Angela,
Had (and having) the same issue from Windows 7 on my TimeCapsule (TC) ..... Not sure how to fix it but I have a workaround:
    1) Make sure you are getting your internet connectivity from the TC instead of your ISP's modem (turn off wifi on the ISP's modem)
    2) go to windows menu and type CMD on the search box, that should get you a black screen. Type IPCONFIG and note the numbers on the Gateway (mine is 192.168.1.1)
    3) Open Airport utility and go to File > Configure other
    4) Type the Gateway from step 2 and your TC password (if you didn't change it, it should be the serial number f your TC, found on the bottom sticker)
    5) you should be able to see yout TC settings.
Hope it helps. I had a big headache when setting TC on my Windows laptop.... (but none on my Macbook) :-)  Good luck!

  • Question Mark when trying to play videos?

Why am i getting a question mark over the quicktime sign when i try to play a video on the internet?

I visited that page for the first time today.
Page source code holds errors (View Page Source to see it).
When I attempted to reassemble the source files to match the URL each one gave me a 404 (page not found) error.
Seems like the files are in the wrong folder on the server. They do not load based on the current page code.

  • Blinking question mark when Mac Book turns on

When my daughter turns on her Mac Book the screen shows a blinking picture of a folder with a question mark. What does this mean and how can I fix it? My local Genius Bar doesn't have an opening until next week. Thank you.

It means that critical system files are corrupted or missing - no valid operating system was found. Typically this means you must reinstall OS X. It could in rare cases simply be due to directory corruption that may be repaired. So first you might do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    In most cases reinstalling OS X will be necessary. You may be able to do the following;
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Does anyone know what to do?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
