HT1751 How do I move my entire iTunes library from my iomega hard drive to my new Mac Book Pro? I no longer want to keep my music on the external drive.

Because of a lack of enough memory on my old Mac Book, I put all my music on an external hard drive. Now that I have a new Mac Book Pro with lots of memory, I want to move the music onto this new computer but I haven't been able to yet. I tried the migration assistant but that didn't work. Any suggestions?

I may sound like a real rookie here, but on my new MacBook Air there isn't a "Pictures" folder under "Users/kendallwilson" like there used to be on my old MacBook Pro (Early 2011). I'm still working out the new software on my MB Air, so where exactly should I open this new window to start following the steps you just provided me.

I got a new iPad for Xmas to replace an old laptop not realising I would still have to have a laptop or PC for my main iTunes library. I have got round ths by creating my own area on my partner's laptop & have installed my iTunes library on there. However, it has only installed my purchased music & not my wider collection such as all my CD's that I burned then got rid of to go digital. I have my complete library on my iPad & iPhone but need it on my laptop too in case I lose or break a device & need to install my iTunes library to a new device.
I have followed the support detailing how to move your iTunes to a new computer but am not getting very far. I don't have an iPod to use as an external hard drive. I read that you can drag your iTunes library to a CD or DVD but my library is 16GB & I don't have any disc big enough!
Does anyone have an idea of a simple way I can do this? Is it not possible to do it directly from my iPad or iPhone seeing as my complete library is on both of these devices?

Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
To get all your content off your connect your iPad to your new computer.
Then use a 3rd party piece of software to transfer your content

The iphone is not a backup device. The sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases: File>Transfer Purchases.
You should copy everything ( files/docs/pics/contacts/calendars/music/etc) from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one - as you would any time you get a new computer.

I have tried to copy my iTunes library from my old (2008) Dell PC to a 32 GB memory stick and then copy it from the stick to the iTunes library in the new MacBook Pro which I purchased recently from a reputable dealer which resells refurbished Macs, (lease returns, etc). The Mac does not seem to recognize the memory stick. I thought the Mac would recognize that the memory stick held iTunes files and would then transfer them without prompting to its own iTunes libary. It did not do so. I have therefore tried to find the command sequence within iTunes (on the Mac) for moving the material from the memory stick to the iTunes library. Cannot find those commands. Does anybody know where to find such commands. I have to say, I am really disappointed that such a simple function would prove to be beyond my capabilities. I thought the Mac was supposed to be easier than a PC. !!! Oh well, I am hoping this forum will help !!!

Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
So, you can see your whole iTunes folder on the memory stick after copying from the PC?

I am now stuck and can't seem to restore my entire itunes library to itunes. The items purchased from the itunes store are in the library on the new laptop, but the rest of my music is not. How do I restore it to my itunes library? I have tried opening itunes while holding down shift and selecting "choose library" option, but when I select the itunes folder, it doesn't appear in the library.

Congratulations on your new laptop! I understand that you have copied your old iTunes Library to your new computer, but you are still not seeing the music. I recommend reviewing Part 5 in the section titled "External drive" in the following article:

Hi to anyone who can help. I just made the huge mistake of switching my iMac to Lion and within minutes everything started going buggy. Now I can't even get the computer to stay unfrozen for more than a few minutes. I'm terrified I'm going o lose all my children's pictures. Photos that were originally synced from a computer can be copied off via third-party iPad apps such as Simple Transfer (which has a free lite version called Simple Photo & Video Transfer which you can try first), which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on the computer.
Have you not got a backups of the originals on external drives ?

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to Home > Music on your computer. It will replace the one that may already be there and anything you have in it will be lost -- you could give the folder a different name just in case, and delete it yourself later. Unplug the external and start iTunes.

Open your Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library.

The thing I hate about iTunes Match is that if I don't have access to WiFi or Cellular then I have NO ACCESS to my music. Since I travel often and am frequently in situations where there is no Wifi/Cellular (or it's to expensive when in another country) I'm left with no options.

If you use a regular CD, then you will need a lot (depending on how many songs, videos, or apps) I recommend using DVDs so that way, you can store a lot. (CDs hold up to 800MB or 80min.; DVDs hold up to 4.7GB or 120 min.)
