The activation server truly is unavailable. Rare, usually fixed within minutes.
Your antivirus or firewall or router's firewall is blocking access to
gs.apple.com on ports 80 and 443.
Your iPhone is jailbroken or otherwise hacked.
The computer you connected to during the restore/update was
used to hack/jailbreak some other iOS device, and its
network database was corrupted during the process.

Is that an Ethernet cable, or is that a phone cable? The AirPort Extreme does not have a modem on board, so you must use a separate modem with the Extreme.

How can I retrieve photos when it says my cloud and iTunes backups are empty or not backed up?
When I tried to update my iPhone 5s to iOS 8.1, I was forced to choose to restore or back up. Back up wasn't working so I had no choice but to restore. I lost pictures over the last two years. When I tried my cloud, there was nothing. I would get notifications that my cloud was full, but I thought there would at least be some photos in there. When I tried to restore a back up, it said the last time was two years ago. I thought when you're on wifi, it automatically backs up. I've charged my iPhone into my Macbook a bunch of times, so something should have backed up. Is there any hope for my photos?Sorry no backup - no pictures.
Yes phone will automatically backup to icloud when on wifi and phone is charge, but your phone storage was full so it stop backing up.

If you are having an issue with updating your iPhone, try it through a different method like in iTunes or through software update on your iPhone in settings. If that does not work then follow the steps in the article below to force a restore on your iPhone. I purchased an unlocked iPhone4 last month. Everything was fine till yesterday. Today morning when I tried to check mail, i suddenly got an error message saying " Could not activate cellular data network: you are not subscribed to a cellular data service", when I checked on my network settings i was not able to find the cellular data network tab ( where we use to input APN manually). i even tried to restore my iPhone to its factory settings, Still it remains the same. i cant able to connect to Internet using cellular data. help me...Plz..
Where did you purchase it from? There are lots of iPhones sold as "unlocked" which are carrier locked phones that were hacked and are not officially unlocked. These phones are subject to re-locking to the original carrier, particularly when updated.

Bad juju not having a bootable backup that you can revert back to when you run into these kinds of issues. Get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. See these for details:

Back to your issue. Boot with the Leopard install disk, select your language, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and repair the disk and permissions. Report back. -

If you are in recovery mode, it is already gone. If you have a recent backup, you can reload it after you restore your phone.

When I tried to update my software, the phone froze, and all I get now is the logo to connect to itunes but iturnes will not pick it up. I can not get into the phone at all. Does anybody know how to fix this, I really dont want to drive 2 hours to the apple store.
