HT201210 I get an error message that says the iPad software update server could not be contacted. How do I fix that?

I am trying to upgrade my iPad from version 4.3.5 to the new 5.0.1 and I get the above error message. It says, The iPad software update server could not be contacted. I also do not have an Update button when I go into Settings and General.

You must have ios 5 or later for that facility to show up. Meanwhile, keep trying /try later via iTunes on your computer..

Have you jailbroken this device? This will make the iPhone not talk to the Software Update Server (that signs and accepts software updates) please refer to the following link? Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"
The iPhone will talk to the software update servers, just need to change the host files, it's a simple process, sorry if you were confused about the wording in to top?

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

WHY DOES MY PHONE KEEP SAYING " THE IPHONE SOFTWARE UPDATE SERVER COULD NOT BE CONTACTED???

The most likely reason is you once used your computer to hack or jailbreak a phone or iPad, and the process corrupted the network database on your computer. You need to edit your hosts file and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com.
The other possibility is that your firewall and/or antivirus is blocking access to Apple's activation servers.

Ok so I reset my ipod touch 4th gen and it got stuck on the apple logo screen and holding down the buttons just made it turn off for a few seconds and go straight back onto the logo screen, nothing was happening with it connecting to itunes either. But I held the home and the power button down at the same time while connected to my laptop and then when the logo reappeard I released the power button and it came up with with the itunes logo and the usb logo. I cannot access the iTunes software update server from my HP laptop.
I tired updating my iPad 2 via Wi-Fi to the new software and it crashed. The dreaded USB and iTunes symbols appeared and I cannot reset the iPad because when I plug it into the laptop I get an error message saying | cannot contact the iTunes software update server.
I tried a manual reset by holding down the reset/sleep and home buttons and the symbols appear again.
