HT201240 I've forgotten my administrator password.

Running OS X 10.7.5 and the lock is on in users and groups section of the system preferences and Apple ID is not ticked off for allowing to change password. What can I do????

Follow the instructions in the beige and green boxes.

Note
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

I've forgotten my administrator password and can't download software. can anyone advise how to reset a new password without having the original?

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

  • I have forgotten my administrator password and can't find my Mac OS X Install Dvd..what can I do?

I have forgotten my administrator password and can't find my Mac OS X Install Dvd to reset it, what can I do?

    OK, try this:
    http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/10/forgot-mac-password-how-to-reset-mac-password/
Be very very careful if you decide to use Terminal. Even a small typing error can cause a disaster. And terminal commands must be typed exactly as shown, including spaces.
    Good luck.
p.s. Your Apple ID and password - different from the computer log in password - are what you used to get to this discussion.

If you're using FileVault, you first have to unlock the startup volume in Disk Utility. Select it and click the Unlock button in the toolbar. Of course, this is only possible if you know another password to unlock the volume. If you don't, follow instead these instructions.

Try the method as mentioned by " Ds Store " in the below User Tip. You will have to boot your Mac in Single User Mode where you can reset the Password using Terminal Command and without the Snow Leopard Disc.

  • Resetting a forgotten Administrator Password

I'm helping a friend who has an iMAC G5 which currently runs Mac OS X 10.4.8, (Tiger), and has forgotten his administrator password. The original discs for this machine are Tiger Mac OS X 10.2.3. We've already tried using the install disc (disc 1). We put the disc in and restarted the system, holding down the C key when the tone was heard and continued to hold it until the spinning gear appeared. It seems to load the CD because we could hear it grind as the system started up and we noticed small file-folder icons appear in the center of the screen with a question mark, but eventually it seemed to load the OS from teh hard drive and started as usual, with a Finder window open browsing the CD. From everything we've read, we should have instead seen the installation program where we'd have the chance to reset the administrator password. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks!

Hi LLApple, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Yes, you should've sen the Installer, but...
I wouldn't try changing Tiger's Passwords with a Jaguar or Panther Install Disk at all.

  • Complications resolving forgotten administrator password...

Hi. I have an imac 10.5.8 which been in storage for a year or so. Unfortunately I have forgotten the administrator password. I have spent most of the day in forums but am still unable to resolve the issue. I would like to either use terminal to set up a new administrator account, or preferably to use the startup disc to reset my password.
I am not able to reboot in single user mode. I must have set up firmware protection when i got the imac years ago. (I cant fix this without the administrator password.)
...so I can't open terminal or the start up disc from the login screen.
I have tried opening terminal from the guest account (the only account I can get into)  and using these instructions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3506318
but terminal tells me that I do not have permission to do this.
I have tried numerous times to open the reset password application in the Utilities folder in the startup disc from within the guest account, but everytime it quits unexpectedly.
At a loss as to what to do. Would appreciate any help!
    Thanks.

Maybe your are getting the firmware password?  Do you see this image?

Remove one memory stick.  Then do as BD suggests.
    BDAqua reminds me:
Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + p + r).
