Do not worry about the backups. They will be deleted automatically after a week, or if your HD gets too full. See #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
The "other" stuff is just that -- all sorts of things that don't fall into the few categories listed. The operating system, system work files, plus lots of your stuff like documents, mail, etc. See Lion's Storage Display -

Hi, I have a Power Book G4 Tiger 10.4.11 and my problem concerns iTunes 9.2.1(5). I have changed my Apple ID and password recently. Since that, I am told, only when I try to buy something in iTunes Store, that my "session has expired". Where does this come from? What should I do to solve this problem ? I have downloaded the latest pages update on my iPad, but my iMac still has Pages version 4.3, and I cannot find out how to update it on my desktop. When I try to send something from my iPad pages via email to be opened on my desktop in Pages, it won't open in Pages. I get a message that it can't be opened because the version is too old. I sent the document as a PDF and it worked. But I want to be able to use Pages back and forth. HOw do I update the Pages version on my desktop iMac?
The file format used by the iOS versions of the iWork apps can only be read by the new iWork apps on your Mac - i.e. Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. Those versions for the Mac require Mavericks, OS X 10.9. The "too old" error on a Mac comes if you are trying to open an iWork '08 or earlier file in the newest apps. If you do have the newest apps you can open the files from your iPad.
If you can't or don't want to upgrade to Mavericks & the newest iWork apps your best option would be to export/share the files from the iPad to a type an older version of iWork can read such as Word, text, Excel, etc.
Or contact AppleCare. They made this mess, let them fix it. -

Hold the Option key down and restart. Select one of the drives that comes up and hit the Return key.

i have a problem when i try to update or install apps in my ipad, and a message come up says "can not connect to Itunes Store", anyone know why? please advise. however i had update all my detail of payment method.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Power cycle the router.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved. -
I bought Aperture when I bought my Mac, so preloaded. "refer to your packaging to obtain a serial number" I don't have any packaging or serial number because it was preloaded. How do a I get a serial number for Aperture if I never received any packaging containing the serical number in the first place? I've had this for almost five years and all of a sudden it's asking for a serial number...
Just because this comes up as the first thing when you Google this problem...
I resolved this issue by uninstalling Aperture and then reinstalling it from the App store.

I can save iTunes onto my computer, but when I click run, this is the message that appears. How do I get this thing installed?
