I have just opened a new icloud email address and am unable to open ANY of the messages in my INBOX. For each item I get the message "Cannot open this item. This operation is NOT supported until the entire message is downloaded. Download the message and try again". I now have no clue what I need to do to open these items. Help please.

What version of iPhoto do you have installed? Is if one of the versions shown as not compatible in this screenshot?
If it is then go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5. It will be free if you have an iPhoto 9 or later verson currently.

After you register, set them up as new.

To tell me to mark it as spam is just not good enough. I do not want this rubbish cluttering my inbox.

Nobody want to receive spam, but it's a fact of life. Apple is certainly not selling your address on to spammers, and it's possible that the spammer has been guessing at possible addresses and has hit on yours.
A good third-party program for dealing with spam is SpamSieve - after a training period it's very good at identifying spam and shunting it to a Spam folder where you can check it and delete at your leisure. It works with iCloud.

You can add up to three 'email aliases' - these are additional addresses (not accounts) which deliver into the same inbox as the main account. In fact it's a good idea to give out alias addresses, rather than the main address, because if they attract spam you can easily change them.
You should however be aware before you start that once you've created an alias you cannot turn that address into a full iCloud account, move it to another account, or reactivate it if you delete it.

Alternatively you can create a new Apple ID and use it to open a new iCloud account which you can sign into in System Preferences (or Settings)>Mail, Contacts and Calendars. This secondary account can sync data between its own online account and your Mac, though it cannot use PhotoStream. Data entered in one account won't appear in the other online, though both appear in alongside each other on your Macs or devices.

You can create an alias email address to use that is linked to your current account and will recieve email in your current inbox, as explained here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mm6b1a490a. Be aware that you cannot use an alias address to create a new iCloud account, move it to another account or reactivate it should you ever delete it.
Your other option is to create a secondary account for just email, by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud, entering a different Apple ID and turning on Mail. However, mail in this account will be fetch, not push.

You cannot do that. The AppleID you used to create the iCloud account is an active primary email address. The email address you created with the iCloud account is also an active primary email address (all Apple domain email address automatically become AppleIDs as well). You cannot replace the primary email address on one active AppleID with the primary email address on another, active AppleID.
You can use your iCloud email/AppleID with iTunes, but it will be a separate account, so all your previous purchases remain tied to the other AppleID you have.
I don't understand your statement that you could not remeber your old AppleID password, as you would have had to use it to create the iCloud account in the first place (the first step of creating the iCloud account required you to login with your existing AppleID and password)?

I'm having a similar problem. I had previously (over a year ago) purchased 2 episodes of Law & Order. Then about 2 months ago, I purchased the 3rd season of Sons of Anarchy. When I downloaded these episodes to my iPad, about a dozen full seasons of various shows popped up, too.
