HT2490 why system preferences can't be found?

i try to click on system preferences but i t dont do anything

Two possibilities.
Either it got deleted from the Applications or Applications -> Utilities folder, or you accidentally damaged your Launchservices cache.  System cache cleaning utilities can do that.   The worst is MacKeeper, and removing it requires third party directions:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036
Do not use system cache cleaning utilities on a system that isn't backed up.
If you find System Preferences can't be found with one of the utilities on the bottom of this tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
http://www.charlessoft.com/ Pacifist can extract it from your 10.5 installer disc (if you are running 10.5).
Once you extract it and put it in the right folder, run the 10.5.8 combo update from:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you are running 10.6, obviously use the 10.6.8 combo update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Since you posted in the 10.6 forum, but have a signature that says you are running 10.5.8, it is hard to know which link to give you.  Always make sure you post in the correct forum for your operating system, and update your signature if needed.

  • The application system preferences can't be opened

After limiting spotlight searches to external shared hard drives, I cannot eliminate this limit because when I go to System Preferences to change Spotlight, I get an error message "the application System Preferences can't be opened". How can this be reset?

    No error code.
I finally went to caches in my library and delted "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache".
I tried to restart my computer but it hung up. I unplugged it and re started.
Maybe primitive. But it seems to be working so far.
    thanks!

  • Why under security in system preferences can I not make changes?

When I go to change the settings under General in Security in the systems preferences on my Macbook Pro they are all grey except require a password and can't be clicked. I am trying to change the automatic logout time, but it won't let me. Please help!

Just to confirm, you click the lock, enter your admin password, the lock icon changes to an unlock icon, and all the checkboxes still remain grayed out?

  • Why "System.setIn()" can set the final parameter "System.in"?

When i worte a class to test the System class,I have read the System class source.
I found that the parameter System.in is defined as a final parameter.
But strangely, why the System.setIn() can change the System.in?
This is the fragment of the source
    public static void setIn(InputStream in) {
         setIn0(in);
private static native void setIn0(InputStream in);the setIn() method calls a private method called setIn0(), but the setIn0() does noting. I found a "native" definition? I think this is the key reason
Pleas tell me what the "native" means and the how the setIn() & setIn0() method work?

You really can't set final variables after they've been set in Java code, but Sun gets away with it by using native (that is non-java) code. It's a (necessary?) evil and should not be taken as a guide to good code. Just imagine a big "Big Bad Voodoo" sign above the native method.

  • HT2490 My System preferences always opens in a small window now.

Every time I open up system preferences it always opens in a little window.  All lf the text and the icons are all scrunched together.  I'm actually an IT person and have been doing this for years but for some reason I can find nothing on the internet addressing this issue.  I've looked at the view settings, window view settings nothing seems to address the issue.
The green button is missing to even expand it to full size.  It is very annoying and I can't seem to find a resolution.

I can't find anything, not I can't find nothing.  Boy, I hate typos.  Can anyone tell me how to get the preferences to open up in a full size window as they used to?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • System Preferences: Can't choose Anywhere or Advanced

When viewing the "Security & Privacy" section of the "System Preferences" app in OSX Mavericks 10.9.0, under the "General" sub-heading and with the padlock in the unlocked state, I cannot select the "Anywhere" option under "Allow apps downloaded from". As soon as I choose it, it reverts to whatever the setting was previously (and either of the first two options works).
Moreover, when pressing the "Advanced..." button at the bottom, the options flash very quickly and nothing else happens.
Is this possibly the result of some antivirus or spyware installed by the company I work for? They have LANdesk running on this machine, presently.

Very likely, if they have remote administration software installed, it's preventing you from changing those settings.
Note that it's not a good idea to change that setting to "Anywhere" anyway. That totally disables an important security setting in Mac OS X that has been, from time to time, the only thing between your machine and certain new malware programs.
If you need to run a program that the current settings do not allow, you can simply hold down the control key, click the app in question and choose Open from the contextual menu that appears. Rather than refusing you outright, this will show a warning that will allow you to choose to open it. This is only necessary once, if done on an administrator account, after which the app will be marked as safe and can be opened normally.

  • System Preferences can't set date and time and other odd behaviour

I have a 2008 Macbook Air, which is beginning to show signs of age, but now appears to have taken on a terminal problem.  I can't set the date and time in the system preferences, even when connected to the internet - the pane just comes up as faded out and I am unable to do anything. The problem started after I accidentally allowed the battery to run down without having shut down the computer and it automatically assumed a date of 1 Jan 2001. I am unable to perform any updates on the machine until the issue is resolved, according to software update.
Other strange things that have happened are that the trackpad no longer responds to the 'tap to click' function or 'two finger' click. In system preferences, I cannot edit energy saver, network (advanced) or account settings - attempting to do so brings up more faded panels or an error message after failure to load.
Has anyone seen similiar behaviour on their mac or have suggestions as how I might resolve the problem?
    Thanks!

If this is recent, what has changed since the last time D&T worked correctly?
I see that your Question has languished for some period of time without response. You have posted your issue in Using Apple Support Communities whose topic is 'How to use this forum software's interface, features and/or how to find what you wish'. It is a relatively low traffic and inappropriate forum for your problem. I will ask our Hosts to move it to " Using iPhone " where it may get a more rapid response from your fellow users.

  • System preferences - can anyone help?

    Hi all
I've got an imac11,2 and I have no icloud icon in system preferences. I want to back up to icloud but even when I type in finder its not there. All downloads are up to date - is my imac just too old (2011)? Help please...

You don't get icloud with 10.6.8.   Only some very sketchy elements of it that are of no use to you.  You need at least 10.7 Lion but better Mavericks (if your machine can take it).   Then of course, Gary's comments take effect.
Better you buy a portable HD to hold a clone of your system, which you can update every month or so.   You store it well away from your computer where it acts as security in the event of machine damage, fire, burglary etc.

  • System preferences can't sign in to iCloud

I click on "Enter Password..." in the iCloud pane of System Preferences and click "OK". It just sits there spinning the little circle, forever. It's not letting me sign in, it looks like.

May have been unclear: I click "OK" after entering the correct password. I know it's correct because i can sign into www.icloud.com using this.

  • Upon restart system folder can not be found

No problems with machine since last Oct. when I had to replace a stick of ram.
Run down of what has been happening now:
Last week - machine was up and running. Went to start Mail (had it open earlier in day) and got spinning ball of death. Could not force quit. Upon restart system folder could not be found. Restarted again, started up fine.
Yesterday - went to log on in log in screen and once again spinning ball. Upon restart could not find system folder. This time had to restart 4 times and after cutting power and restarting then system folder was found.
I have repaired premissions, verified disk (ok), ran scripts, made sure software was updated, made sure right startup disk was selected. Found 1 bad font, removed this, re-ran everything, rechecked fonts. CS3/safari/mail seem to be running fine. Although I have not done a lot with them as I'm slow with work this week. Hard drive does not sound like it's making any extra noise. Thought this problem might be fixed. As machine was fine this a.m. shut down machine about an hour ago thinking I wasn't going to use for a day, remembered I had to do something and upon restart again, no system folder. Had to cut power again and then starts up. What could be going on?
    Any suggestions? Ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Disk utility shows disk being verified & ok.
One thing I didn't think of was resetting the PRAM.... which I found this advice under: Recent User Contributed Tips: a brody - Myths of required versus not required maintenance for Mac OS X (Oct 30, 2008)
    3. Repairing the directory. Partially false. Only required if your data is backed up, and access to your files suddenly is limited even after Spotlight indexing is complete. More true if you get a flashing ? disk, though zapping the PRAM sometimes fixes this issue as well.
after doing this so far no problems.

  • HT2490 my system preferences wont open. why?

    help me asap

Hi Cody, not much to go on, but try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

I searched in Help, no such term appears there.
    I don't understand why.

    Hello All
    First about "position tuner tool"
it is new tool for ME version and it is used with the new menu "Tasmeem"
    Second it is usages
it allows users to move blocks of text, diacritics and even individual dots while preserving textual integrity and the Unicode data structure. Moreover, one can colour diacritics individually for book covers and illustrations. so you have control all over the words and dotes position
Third i wonder why it is not exist on the ID Help even though it has a great role with who works on Arabic Text
