HT3231 How do I change the password on a MacBook Pro that I bought secondhand??

My MacBook Pro keeps asking to update software, eg: Flash Player, and I can't install it because I don't have the User Password.
I bought the laptop secondhand from an Auction – the company that it belonged too has gone bust.
I also own an iMac 27" (2010) with all the relevant start-up disks, etc, and was wondering if I could use these to reboot my laptop

The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime.
To boot from an optical disc, hold down the C key at the chime.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.

How do I change the name of my macbook pro.  My full name is listed on it and I want to change that.  In the upper right hand corner it is correct but all that lists is my login name.

Mr. Pat, there are some people who still try to do that, but you are risking losing all your music, photos, email, etc. It is not for the faint of heart.  This page, albeit published in 2003 by Dr. Smoke, is still pretty valid, IMHO:

  • How do I change the password for an email account that is defunct?

I have two different apple accounts because the original one I no longer have access to the email address.  For a long time I was able to continue to update my apps because I knew the password.  However now it keeps telling me that the password is wrong, and tells me to change the password.  However that must be done through the email.  It's a vicious cycle and now I have about 20 some apps that need updated and I can't!  Very frustrated ... any help?

Log on to your account with your ISP via webmail and you should be able to change it there.

  • How do I change the printer settings on macBook pro OSX v10.8.1?

I am trying to print a webpage but i want it in duplex format (two pages front and back on one sheet). The default is set to "one sided". I can't seem to change the presets (under presets > show presets > copies and pages > settings and value). Usually we can change the value, ie. the number of copies and change the format to "duplex". I can't seem to change the value.

I am running Leopard OS in 64 bit mode. Everytime I want to run my Cisco VPN client I reboot it in 32 bit mode by holding the two keys (don't remember what two keys at the moment).  I am looking for another way to run my Cisco VPN.  I don't see the check box labeled "Open in 32-bit mode" .  The only thing I see is "Open in Rosetta" or something like that.  Is the check box "Open in 32-bit mode" only show in Lion X OS?

  • How do you change the theme of your macbook pro while still having lion?

I would like to have it look like the old 10.4 look. Any suggestions?

I want the old 10.4 look of the old macbook. In windows they had options where you can choose either the vista view or the classic windows look, etc. I was wondering if MacBook Pro had that feature where even though you have updated software such as Lion, you can still retain the same look your desktop had when you had the 10.4 version.

  • How do I change the font on my Macbook Pro?

My issue is that the writing is so small and I can't see very well as it is, I end up 2 inches away from my screen and I can't work out how to change it. There doesn't seem to be a universal "just make text bigger" option on my mac and it's really annoying me now that I use it more often for emails and such. I can make things within my web-browser bigger by using shift, command + but that doesn't work in emails.
I know you go to font and then select, but when I select, it opens a dialog box with no save or okay button or anything, so when I select my new font, it doesn't stay selected when I shut the dialog box it's still the default one.... how am I supposed to make it change?????

You can only make such a permanent change one way - reduce the screen resolution until the fonts appear large enough for you.
Or you can enable screen zoom in Accessibility preferences:

  • How do I change the password on my IPhone?

How do I change the password on my IPhone?  I am using a card that belonged to my former daughter in law and I cannot get the original password.  I need it to change the Restrictions setting because all of a sudden my ITunes apps won't download when I sync my phone....just photos and music.  Apps list is "grayed" out.

No, not on the home screen.  I clicked on Settings + Restrictions (which is set at "Yes" and I need to change it to "No") and the number pad came up and wanted the password.  My son says its the password that was put on originally when the phone was new (by his ex-wife who owned the phone at the time.)  So now I cannot retrieve the original password from her and cannot change the Restrictions setting and therefore, cannot fix my ITunes/Apps problem.  So aggravating!  But thanks for your response!

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

  • How do I change the password of a user in a group?

I've forgotten the password of a user that is located in a group on my computer. How can I change the password or delete the user?

Hi, depends what OSX version, but...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock...
There you can delete a user by highlighting it, or Rest the Password if you have an admin account.

  • I changed my gmail e-mail password. How do I change the password that Thunderbird uses to log in to gmail.

I changed the password used to access my gmail account. Thunderbird is still using the old password to access the account. How do I change the password that Thunderbird is using. The last time this happened I ended up creating a new Thunderbird account for gmail. Creating the new Thunderbird account at least let me enter the new password. I really don't want to have three Thunderbird accounts for the same gmail account.
Please do not respond with suggestions about using Password Manager. I do not use it and do not intend to start. I looked and none of my Thunderbird passwords are displayed there. All I want to do is change the password in Thunderbird. If Thunderbird does not have a feature allowing you to change it's passwords, one should be added.

    This is the only way.
