HT3231 Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet?

Hello,
Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro (non Retina display) using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet? The older Mac is a MacBook (Intel, 2007 vintage). The Time Machine backup is to a Western Digital external drive with FireWire & USB ports.
Thanks!
Chips

Thanks for the helpful reply.
After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.
Best!

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

  • Migrated Mac to new Macbook Pro- Does the Time Machine backup follow?

Had old macbook pro with backups on TM. Migrated computer to new macbook pro. Does the old TM backup follow or should I delete (to make space) and restart with new backup?

When your next backup to the same drive starts, you'll get the option to continue using the backups. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Even if you choose to continue, TM will probably do a new, full backup. So if your TM drive isn't well over twice the size of the data it's backing-up, your best bet may be to erase the drive with Disk Utility (don't try deleting via the Finder) and let it start fresh.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

You'll need to erase the drive by booting up holding command-option-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
Use Disk Utility to erase the disk and then Internet Recovery. That will take a while.

You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

Choose migrate from other disk or volume.

  • Two Time Machines and one MacBook Pro ... migrating to a new MacBook Pro

    Background:
I'm a fanatic about backups. I have a Time Machine at home (Time Capsule), and a Time Machine at the work (external USB drive). Both backup my MacBook Pro.
I just got a new MacBook Pro. I plan to migrate my data from my old MacBook Pro (or a clone on a Firewire drive) rather than from one of the Time Machine backups. It's faster than a wireless transfer, and doesn't require all the mucking around with switching to ethernet and back again with Time Capsule.
    The question:
How can I make sure both Time Machine backups recognize the new MacBook Pro as a continuation of the previous data? I could start all over again with two fresh backups, but I would prefer not to.
Is it automatic that both Time Machines will recognize a familiar face with a new hat? Is there some trick to making it work, or, at worst, some trick to fixing it? I've read about changing the expected MAC address in Time Machine, but I don't think that's the best answer.
    Thanks for your help.

You can't and they won't. a new computer will start a new backup sequence and there is no way around that.

there is no better answer than that but even if you do change the recorded MAC address in TM backups, TM will still make a complete full backup of the new computer the first time it backs up.

  • SplashID 7.1 crashing after migrating to a new MacBook Pro

I just bought a new MacBook Pro (Retina 15") and migrated all my apps & files from my old MacBook Pro which was already running Mavericks. I can no longer open SplashID 7.1,  It crashes upon opening.  I have tried reinstalling it, however the reinstalled application is using the existing library, as it asks for my password, not my registration code.  I have run disk permission verification.  The following is what I get when trying to open.  Can anyone help?  I really need to access both my desktop and my iPhone versions.

I actually installed Quicktime pro and Flip4Mac Pro again after I bought the Retina Macbook. Today I did it again but still get the same OSStatus error -50. I guess there is some old file that has to be removed. Flip4Mac comes with an uninstaller. Quicktime does not.
I read that his could be something with security that is why I mention the problem with the zip files as well.

  • Migrating files onto new Macbook Pro Permission to view files/folders

Hi. Forgive me if there is a more appropriate place for this question. I have just bought a new Macbook pro and am trying to migrate everything from my (very old) Ibook G4. The migration seems to have worked, using migration assistant and a firewire, but now it is saying *I do not have permission* to open the folders to get to my old files etc. Please can anybody help me - I need those files!
    Thanks.

    Hi D,
That's what I don't like in migrate, a rather copy files later when system were fully updated and working fine.
Try to boot in safe mode (hold Shift right after press the power button) and to use Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility to repair permissions.
    Good luck.

  • What is the fastest way to transfer data from old macbook pro to new macbook pro using the migration assistant

I'm trying to transfer my data (applications, files, etc.) From my older macbook pro to my new macbook pro. I've started the migration wizard and the process aHa its going to take 16 hours. Is there a faster way? Fireside? If so what cables would I need and is it ok to stop this since its already startwd.

    Ethernet or Firewire:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
Sounds like you're using WiFi...that will take forever & can produce errors.

  • Migrated to a new Macbook Pro, now can't find my custom fonts

I migrated my backed up computer from an external hard drive to my new Macbook Pro, purchased in July 2014. Running Mavericks 10.9.5, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
I am a graphic designer and had many custom fonts on my old computer in a file structure that worked with Suitcase Fusion 2. (Users/Shared/Library (?)/My Fonts) This structure and all my custom fonts are now missing.

Try calling AppleCare at 1-800-APL-CARE and try to reset your password to you old AppleID through them, Give them your MacBook Pro's serial number to avoid having to pay for phone support. You may have run out of options to reset your password youself, but they may be able to override you hacker's attempt to keep you out by having you verify billing info stored on the old Apple ID. Any content purchased with that old Apple ID will have to be authorized for playback on your new MacBook Pro with the original Apple ID and password that was used to purchase said content. To my knowledge there is currently no way of transfering ownership of content from one AppleID to another, however after you get your old Apple ID sorted out, you may be able to change the main email to one of your own and change your password to one thats tough to crack to avoid going through this terrible experience again.
    Hope that helps :-)

  • HT201250 Time Machine migrate to a new Macbook Pro and keeping Logic plugins

So, I'm getting a new macbook pro (the latest 15" with the highest spec) and I'm looking to transfer everything using Time Machine, so that it's as if I'm still using the same machine. I use Logic 9 and I have hundreds of expensive plugins and I want to be sure that they will transfer across and I won't need to buy any of them again. I appreciate that some may have compatabiity issues, but that aside, will everything transfer as if I'm using the same machine and it will all be exactly the same?

    Hello there, micchaelfrombarnes.
As per the article you were referred to us from, Time Machine should be able to restore your new MacBook  to be just like your current one:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Time Machine automatically backs up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, email messages, music, photos, movies, and documents.
    Additionally:
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you get a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made. When you start up your new Mac for the first time, the Setup Assistant asks you if you would like to restore from backup. If you've already set up your new Mac, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities) to do the same thing.
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac.
For a more detailed instruction on how to migrate the data from your Time Machine backup, refer to this article:
OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Should I migrate to my new MacBook Pro or reinstall/move stuff manually?

My new MacBook Pro will be delivered today. I am moving from a 2009 MacBook Pro which is also running Mavericks. I have had Macs for a long time and have always used OSX's "migration" option to move to my new computer. However, I am wondering if alot of "junk" may be accumulating and moving from Mac to Mac. Is there a benefit (disk space, performance, etc) to manually loading all the software and copying my data over?  Obviously, this option causes problems like getting my passwords in keychain to move over, etc that using the migration program would take care of automatically.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I think I'm going to try the "fresh start" of manually loading stuff.
I am not going to try and talk you out of your "fresh start."
Of course the most trouble free method is to use the Set-Up Assistant the first time you boot your new Mac.
Never had a problem with this method.  Migration Assistant at a later date I can not say the same.
For me I want a seemles migration: Same Background photo, same files/folders on the desktop, same apps I have installed, same bookmarks/history in my browsers, etc
Best to prepare your old Mac with a fine bill of health is always recommended if you do choose this method on the intial boot.

  • Migration failure to new MacBook Pro

have tried using Migration Assistant to transfer content from old MacBook pro to a new 13 inch i5. Seems to go smoothly via Firewire cable and get completion message with all transferred successfully etc. But I get no content for iPhoto, iCal, Address book, Photo booth? What is wrong??? have tried three times with same result. Have tried importing files for those applications without success.

Thanks...But the manual says clearly if you don't want to use set up assistant when first opening the new machine, no probs, just use Migration Assistant, later when you like........Is that really duff advice from Apple??
    Yup.
They're right, you can use Migration Assistant, but there are downsides you don't get with Setup Assistant.
With Migration Assistant, you end up with an extra user account.  The one you created when setting-up the new Mac plus the one(s) you transferred.  Look in System Prefs > Accounts; most likely, the missing data is in one of them.
