Another one that Apple doesn't make obvious.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
Backup failed with error: The target disk image volume is read-only.
Most likely, you got this message before all this started:
What that doesn't explicity say is, the backups failed the verification.  When that happens, Time Machine marks the sparse bundle as damaged and won't back up to it anymore (even if Repair Disk can't find the problem).  See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.

The error that I am getting is this "Time Machine can't use the disk image because it can't be written to."  Any ideas on the fix for this?  When I go to the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro shows that it is locked, I think I did something wrong, but can't figure how to unlock it to see if that fixes it.

As far as we know, Time Machine cannot write to a disk image. It needs to write directly to the Time Capsule disk.

I can't remeber my security questions, and I can't ask for a new password because I can't log in to the email because it got hacked...

Have you tried logging out of your account on your iPod by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then logging back in to see if that 'refreshes' the account on it and if it then works ?

From the iTunes Store, yes, all your iOS devices running on the same account will qualify.

You should be able to select Force Quit from the menu beneath the Apple icon in Finder
and choose to Quit iPhoto from there, without messing up the Mac OS X in the process.
    OS X - Support
Not sure if rebuilding the iPhoto library would help this issue. However if you had to
turn off the computer without the correct method (unplug, etc; instead of menu choice)
the system may have accrued damages and should be checked, maybe repaired by
use of the Disk Utility in the system. Or restart the computer in Safe Boot mode, then
run 'repair disk permissions' while it is running in that reduced mode; then restart after.

  • Many events and photos are missing from my iphoto.  I have time machine and would like to restore without creating duplicates. The issue is although my photos are presently blank time machine/iphoto does see the file so importing them will create duplicat

For some unknown reason, events and photos in my Iphoto are appearing blank. The photos have a title / placeholder but no picture. I use time machine and have back ups, my goal is to restore the photos without creating duplicates. Unfortunately iphoto sees the blank photos as if the picture exists?  Help

If you want to use your back up you need to restore then entire Library from Time Machine, and then replace the damaged Library with it.

  • Time Machine can't restore mails prior to ML

Today I found out that I'm not able to restore any emails prior to Mountain Lion via Mail.app and Time Machine. In Finder.app and Contacts.app my backups go back all the way to May 2011 and I don't have any problems restoring files from even the first backup. In Mail however, I can only restore emails that where recieved or composed on Mountain Lion (see green box in screenshot). Although the sidebar of the TM "Star Wars" view in Mail.app shows all my backups, I cannot access anything that was created under Lion (the red box in the screenshot).
Anybody experiencing this too? What could be the cause? Any possible fix?
And of course I already searched http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html but I couldn't find this kind of issue there.
Thanks for your help in advance and Regards,
    Werner

    Hello all,
I am happy to inform you that in the end I found a workaround:
    1) Make sure you enable "show path bar" in the view menu of the finder.
    2) Select the applications folder in the finder and then launch Time Machine
    3) When you are in the Time Machine galaxy go to the search bar in the Finder and try to search for a random email you sent before your last back-up.
    4) The tricky part is that the first time you type in some text it will not perform any search. Delete the text with the backspace and repeat the text. Now it will perform the search.
    5) In the results you should now be able to find an email.
    6) Now go to the path bar at the bottom of the finder and move along the path until you see the the Mail folder and select it.
    7) Press the restore button in Time Machine and your Mail is recovered!
I don't know if the following had any influence, but maybe you should make the hidden home/library folder visible first. I already did this before I took the steps above.
It was a tip I found on the Macworld forum
    Dan Frakes wrote:
"Change the hidden flag using Terminal
Launch Terminal from within your own account, type chflags nohidden ~/Library, and press Return. Your Library folder is now permanently visible. To make the folder invisible again, use the command chflags hidden ~/Library."
    Good luck!

  • Attempting to install Mountain Lion on iMac running OS 10.6.8 produces the message that ML cnnot be installed on the int. HD because it is used by Time Machine. It is the int. startup drive. What now?

You may have a folder named Backups.backupdb at the root level of your startup disk. You cannot find it with Spotlight. Just navigate to your startup disk (usually named "Macintosh HD") and drag Backups.backupdb to the Trash.
Is your startup disk partitioned? If so this may be applicable:
OS X Lion: Installer reports "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer"

  • I am using BT Broadband home hub and want to use my time machine - Can I turn the wireless router off in TM?

    Hi,
I have BT home hub which is now my main router in the house.  I also have Apple TV which works off the router and a network adapter around the house which is perfect for all my needs.  However, I also have a time machine but haven't used it for a while now as it's internal router overrides my current network which causes problems.
Being that i'm not very 'technical' I was hoping someone could give me a  'guide for dummies' instruction on how to turn off the wireless signal inside my time capsule without messing up the BT router?
    Many thanks in advance
    Alex

    Thanks guys,
Sorry, just to clarify, I need to connect the ethernet cable to my home hub and my TC first before i can do this?
And once i've done this will my stuff be backed up via the cable or wireless?
I know these are probably very stupid questions but like I said, i'm a div when it comes to this stuff!

  • Time Machine can't access the backup disk "Data".

The operation couldn't be completed. ( OSStatus error 22. )
anyone else having this problem when trying to back-up on TC ?

Strange.. two in a row looks bad.
I want you to ensure you have ipv6 set to link-local for both wireless and ethernet on the computer.
Power down the TC and leave it for an hour or two.
Then power it up again.. does it still have the same issue.
    Do a full factory reset.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Power down and see if it will come up again after an hour with the same problem.
Go to the Disk tab of the airport utility .. is the erase button working.. please try and do a quick erase first.. does that work? If not try a one pass erase?
If everything fails.. ring apple support .. or do that anyway and let them talk you through the problem.
The fact that it worked for 3days and failed and the first was dead out of the box might mean you have some other issue.. but I cannot figure out what it could be. Hard drive failure early on is not unusual.. two in a row is.

  • My Time Machine can only restore individual files or empty folders

Having upgraded to Snow Leopard, I find that when trying to restore a folder of files from my Time Machine HD one of two things happen: either it copies the folder but not the files within it, or it says I don't have the permissions to copy the folder, and then copies the folder anyway - albeit without its contents. If I restore an individual file, I have no problems - but this is hardly going to provide the security promised by Time Machine if I need to restore a project of files saved in a nest of folders, or worse still restore an entire HD.
I have repaired disk permissions on my Mac, I can't repair permissions on my TM drive (it is greyed out in Disc Utility) and so have erased my TM drive and done a new TM backup of my Mac under Snow Leopard hoping this would solve the problem...
    It hasn't! Any suggestions?
I can however connect my G4 Powerbook running Leopard on my WiFi network to the TM drive, and restore folders to it as normal which suggests the issue is to do with the Snow Leopard upgrade...
    Jog!

    I solved my TM-Problem:
The problem was based on incorrect permission and owner settings in my user folder.
I created a new user and copied the files from the corrupt user folder to the new user folder and corrected the permissions and owner settings.
    More information here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963?viewlocale=en_US
Seems that there is a more simple an efficient method:
"Note: In Mac OS X 10.5 and later, while started up ("booted") from the Mac OS X 10.5 installation disc, a user's home directory permissions can be reset using the Reset Password utility."

  • Back up of Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.8 with Time Machine can i restore on a new Pro bought with Lion?

I'm Backing up my Pro with time capsule
I wont have access to any mac machine for the next moth where I will buy a new Pro hopefully this will come installed with Lion.
Can i Restore from this back up across the different platforms?

Apple has always provided an easy, automated way to do that, and there's no indication they won't with Lion.
See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?  The link to Using Setup Assistant on Lion won't be posted until Lion is released, but it will likely be similar to the one for Snow Leopard.

  • Time machine can't access the backup disk ''time machine backup'' on WD My Cloud, Time machine can't access the backup disk ''time machine backup'' on WD My Cloud?

Every time I try to start my Mac's time Machine receive above message and it seems no possible to reopen/start properly the application.
    What is error OSS 2?

WD Back up connection problems for Networked WD hard drive
    “Connection failed”
    “Can not find server”
“There was a problem connecting to the server “WD ShareSpace-Backup”.”
There may be two problems and associated solutions:
    Read only access
It may be necessary to “create” a disk for the WD back up.
    Change Read Only Access
The WD hard drive may automatically create a share for the Time Machine. This share appears in Finder as “WD_Backup”
If you open WD interface through a web browser and go to
Advanced Mode > Users>Folder Share permissions
You will see it as “back up” or similar.
As indicated by others click on the icon on the far left – a pencil and paper – and change the “NFS Access” from “Read Only” to “Full Access”
For Networked back up dives it may be necessary to “create” a disk for the WD back up.
The WD hard drive may automatically create a share for the Time Machine. This share appears in Finder as “WD_Backup”
The password is “backup”, although others have suggested it is sometimes “admin”
If when you open “Time Machine” and “Select Disk” time Machine says it “can not find…” or “can not connect to…” the server/disk it may be necessary to “create”, ”map”, or manually force your mac to connect to the “WD_Backup” folder share.
    To do this
    Open Finder
    Select GO>Connect to Server
In the box at the top enter the IP address for your WD drive. You can find this in the top of your web browser or through your web browser interface with your WD Drive:
    Advanced Mode >Network>LAN
The IP address will probably be in the format
“192.168.0.X” where “X” is a number particular to your network
In my case X used to be 2 but then changed to 3 – I don’t know why.
Click “Connect” and enter the Name and password
    Name: “WD_Backup”
    Password: “backup”
Click “registered user” and click “connect”
Click the “+” button to add the server to the list in the lower box.
    Now open “Time Machine”
    Click “Select Disk”
Your new “disk” / Folder share should appear in the list with the IP address below it thus:
    WD_Backup
    On “192.168.0.X”
As in the screen shot below.
Select this disk by clicking on the disk and then on “use disk”.
    You should now be away………….
