The backup disk image “/Volumes/Richard Searson's Time Caps/Richard’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use. It hasnt backed up for over 24 hours now and I am concerned as only in May my whole system crashed and the time machine was not able to recover any data. I do not want this to happen again. Thanks
This is our most common problem.. and you are number 2 today.

Your problem is repeated with the solution ad nauseam.
But the solution is simple.. pull out the power cord from the TC.. count to 10.. Plug in the power cord again.
This is just poor networking from Apple.
Whenever you have TM issues.. this is the place to check.
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Your issue is C12. -
How do I get the time machine to work again. It's been dong this for 3 days, over and over again.
This is stock standard issue.. report 5-10 times a day here.
Solution is good old.. "Did you turn it off and on again??"
Unplug the TC.. count to 10.. plug the TC power back in again.
This fixes 98% of problems.. and shows the advancement in Mac OS and Apple firmware.. to be just like that other OS we love to hate.
If you cannot get satisfaction.. reboot the whole network.. never a bad idea.. Everything off and start in correct order. Modem.. wait 2min.. TC.. wait 2min.. Clients.
Tell us if you still have issues or read the master wizard of all things TM/TC

Can anyone please help me, with what to do?

Try the above.
No luck then you should do
A1 .. Load the widget so you know what TM is doing.
A4 .. Reset of TM.
A5.. Verify the backup.
First thing.. though.. do a full network reboot..
Turn off everything.. restart the modem.. wait 2min.
Restart the TC.. wait 2min
Restart the computer. See if it now functions.
You might have to reset or do more severe stuff.. but try with that.
I am offline for 8 hours..
Pondini or one of the others here might be able to help further. -
I,m getting this message, The backup disk image “/Volumes/terry bostock's Time Capsul/terry bostock’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use. What does this mean. I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, but it was ok till recently.
A constant bug in Mountain Lion.
Usually, simply powering off the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and starting it back up will reset the network connection.
Give that a try first. -
I just brought a New Macbook Pro and was successful in transfering data from my old macbook. However when I try to back up to my time capsule I receive this message. "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Salvatore Totino's Time Cap/Lorraine’s MacBook Pro.spars
You may need to reset TM and start with a fresh full backup.

Since upgrading my Macbook to Lion, the time machine backups are failing - error message: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Jackie Scanlon's Time Caps/Jacqueline Drabczynska’s MacBook.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)." I have rebooted the TIme Capsule and it worked OK, but don't want to do that every time. Any suggestions? Thanks
Any new info on this?
I had the exact same problem and went crazy and spent a hecka lot of time trying to deal with my brand new 2TB Time Capsule and almost brand new MacBook Pro. Then I thought I fixed it...and I tried SO MANY things, I don't really know what did it...except taking out any apostrophe's in names of stuff that Apple puts in there...BUT...now it's back.
Grrr... -
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Jeffrey Brown's Time Capsule-1/Main.Sparsebundle" could not be created (error 17). How can I fix it?
Try just rebooting the TC.. or a reboot of the network..
Turn everything off and restart in correct order.. modem.. TC.. clients. 2min gap.
Try C9 in pondini for that error.

I generally make a nuisance of myself here by suggesting Apple names are more curse than help. Apple automatic naming conventions are causing havoc.. change everything to SMB compatible names.. ie windows networking which is the base common denominator of networking.. ie if it works with SMB it works on any OS.
Short.. less than 20 characters. 10 is usually plenty. Why type more than you need to?
No spaces.. spaces have to be removed even in apple names..
Pure alphanumeric.. some characters cause issues.. again the apostrophe is a nasty item to all other OS.
The -1 is stupid Mountain Lion.
eg Jeffrey Brown's Time Capsule-1
Change to JBTC -

I am getting this error when time machine tries to back up to a time capsule. "The backup disk image “/Volumes/JUDY ARCENEAUX's Time Capsu-1/JUDY ARCENEAUX’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” is already in use." Same time capsule has worked in the past.
