HT3275 Time machine cannot complete my backup
Time machine cannot complete my backup because 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder'. How do I solve this problem?
Failed again this morning. I checked my logs and one thing it showed was, "Error: (-50) Creating directory..." I saw this...

one thing you can try
Open system prefs and go to spotlight, in the privacy section add your Macintosh HD and any other drives you back up. Give it a few seconds then remove your Macintosh HD and any other drives you added. Close system preferences. Watch the spotlight symbol on the top menu bar "looks like a magnifying glass". It should have a dot in it as in is indexing all your drives again. When the indexing is over (it can take a long time of your drive is big) now try to create a new backup with time machine...."
As usual, it's gonna take a couple days to see if it works. I'll let y'all know...and y'all should try it also, and let us know.

My Time Machine cannot complete a backup. The error message reads "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Brad Blocksidge's Time Caps/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use. Suggestions???
Most common error reported here.. absolutely stock standard what you expect with Mountain Lion.
Restart the TC will fix 98% of them..
Pull out the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in the power cord.
Check the info here for further info.

I keep getting a message that says Time Machine could not complete the backup. It says that my home wifi sparsebundle is already in use. I do not know how to solve this problem. Any ideas?
Disconnect the power from your backup device, wait two minutes, then reconnect the power. This usually solves the problem.

Time Machine cannot complete the backup.
Time Machine software is not "remembering" the exceptions I put into the settings in System Preferences, and is trying to backup the whole HDD to the Time Capsule (which doesn't have enough space). It's trying to stuff 421GB of stuff into 350GB of remaining space.
Once I delete and put in the exceptions (the size goes down to 175GB), and it can backup. But after that one time, it "forgets" the exceptions and the errors return. That sounds like the preferences file may be corrupted. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If that doesn't help, something may be corrupted in your installation of OSX. I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.5 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If still no help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won't affect anything else), then apply the "combo" again. -
My time machine is sending me a message; "The backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Dave's Macbook Pro "sparse bundle" is already in use". As a result, the time machine cannot complete a backup. Any suggestions?
Look at the more like this column on the right.. this is the most common problem reported here.
You need to restart the TC.. that is all..
Pull out the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in power cord.
There are a few occasions where this fails.. see C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html -

This is the second time I've encountered this issue with Time Capsule using Time Machine automatic backup. I haven't found the following specific error message in the list of troubleshooting issues: "Time Capsule cannot complete the backup. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."
I'm not certain what causes this issue. I think it may have something to do with having to force shutdown with apps still open when the beachball hangs and the MacBook has to be rebooted.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue?Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Restart your Mac and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this should solve the problem.
If it doesn't work, see > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html -

Time Capsule cannot complete the backup, backup disk not available. Help please!
Hi,
I've only ever been able to complete one back up using my time capsule and have been having problems for months! I've tried resetting and restarting the TC, it re-installs successfully and the green light comes onto the TC. However, when I try to backup I get the following message:
Time Capsule cannot complete the backup. The backup disk is not available.
I've tried taking it into the Apple store to the genius bar and they seem to think it is working fine. It seems to have connected successfully to my network at home so I'm struggling to work out what to do. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.Have you updated to the latest Time capsule firmware?

Time Machine not deleting oldest backups when the disk is full
Unfortunately, when this happens, Time Machine cannot erase enough space to create room for the new backup. Your options now are:
1) Add a new Time Capsule or a hard drive to the USB port on the existing Time Capsule and continue with backups
2) Manually delete backups from Time Machine....which is a long and tedious process. After a few hours, not much space will be reclaimed and it will not be long before the Time Capsule is full again
3) Erase the Time Capsule....if you really do not need all the old backups from months ago....and start over with a new Time Machine backup and move forward again -
Time Machine cannot mount remote backup disk (ReadyNAS NV+)
Hello,
I own a ReadyNAS NV+ which I use as an external backup. It has a "Time Machine" backup daemon, so the iMac see's it over network. I used it for a couple of months without issues.
A couple of days ago I had to change the physical location of ReadyNAS. Now there are 2 switches between my iMac and the readyNAS.
Since I changed the physical position of the ReadyNAS I try to backup using time machine but it's not possible. Time machine hangs up when trying to up at "Making Backup Disk Available". Using the terminal I can clearly see that AFP has issues mounting the disk:

Finally Time Machine exists with error "Backup disk cannot be accessed. error 109".
Can someone give me a hint or two on how to solve this issue?
regardsNot a NAS-specific issue. The OS is trying to read a block of the sparse disk image, and the read is failing. Basically, the sparse bundle is damaged. You'll need to rename it and then try backing up again to a clean sparse bundle.
That said, make sure you're running a version of the ReadyNAS firmware that actually supports Time Machine. There are several AFP commands that were added for Time Machine that *must* be supported for correct operation, and older AFP implementations did not implement them. The reconnect errors suggest to me that maybe the firmware you are running doesn't support the Reconnect UAM, in which case it probably also doesn't support the replay cache, etc. If that's the case, then things probably won't work correctly without a firmware update even after you fix the corrupted sparse bundle.
Edit: actually, on further searching, it might be a NAS-specific issue. Certain buggy network switches do not properly support jumbo frames in mixed networks, which can cause read errors similar to what you are seeing when working with AFP. (This might have been your post on the other board.) In the Network prefs pane, choose Ethernet, click "Advanced", click the Ethernet tab, change Configure to Manually, and set the MTU to Standard (1500). -
Lost disk image in Finder (Desktop) for backup disk on Intel Mac Pro OS 10.7.3. Time Machine cannot find the internal backup disk. The volume is grayed out in Disk Utility, though it CAN verify the volume. How do I get it back on my desktop?
First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
Try again to back up. -
While backing up to Time Machine, I receive this message: time machine error says: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Apple ’s iMac G5.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

That message is caused by several reasons. Read the Pondini's site to fix the problem > http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html -
Time Machine cannot complete backup
My time machine backup cannot complete because it thinks there is not enough disk space. After trying a number of things, I decided to start over by reformatting my backup disk (I have a secondary backup). I have a 2TB external disk. I have a 2TB internal disk that is 95GB full. Certainly there must be some overhead for the backup process, but it can't double the backup. I'm trying to do a full backup on an empty, newly formatted disk. The message is:
The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup.
I'm using OSX Mavericks 10.9.4

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Time machine cannot complete backups - please help
I hope somebody can help me - my Time Machine has been unable to complete backups for about six weeks or so.
Having read some useful information on the support forums yesterday, I verified both my internal HD and my external disk. The external disk appears fine, yesterday my internal disc needed some 'minor repairs'. I booted from the Leopard disk, but could not find where to repair disk so simply verified disk again and it was apparently fine.
I have verified both disks today and they are again fine. However when I try to back up I get this message:
