  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error (null))

I keep getting "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error (null)).
I have updated the firmware on the Time Capsule and unplugged and replugged it in after waiting more than 10 seconds.
I cannot access the sparsebundle to repair from the Disk Utility.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

It sounds like you have already tried some of pondini's suggestions..
But C17 is the main one, even if the error is a different number..
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Mavericks in particular is having issues with the TC..
So I strongly recommend a full factory reset of the TC.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. See C9 for more info.
Because Mavericks now uses SMB by default for network protocol, it is worthwhile mounting the TC manually using AFP.
In finder use the top menu, Go, Connect to Server.
    Type in as follows,
    AFP://TCname
Replace TCname with your actual TC name..
If the computer fails to find the TC, try again using the full domain name.
AFP://TCname.local is the standard one. The TC opts for local although you now have no place to set it in the airport utility.
If you still have trouble tell me.
Once the computer locates the network resources, it will ask for a password, public by default. Type in your password if you changed it or public. And store it in the keychain.
    Now reset TM.. see A4.
And point the TM to the TC again which you have mounted.
    See if that helps.

  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).

I ma getting an error message from my Time Capsule, "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)." The backup is not working.  How do I fix this?

Just a reboot of the TC or whole network will fix most of the network issues which are unfortunately very common with Lion and worse with Mountain Lion.
Look at C17 for that particular error code here.

  • Time Machine Backup error - The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Extreme.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).

I am getting a Time Machine backup error "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Extreme.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
Then a Finder window pops up with the backup directory in it.  When I open it I see all the backups that were completed successfully and then the one there is simply always shows the data and .inProgress.  I thought that maybe if I could delete the one that is perpetually in progress it would start a new one and run fine, but I won't let me delete it.

Reboot the TC.. or go to the 5.6 utility.. and disconnect all users.. to force it to reconnect.

  • The backup disk image "/volumes/data/GuisselleiMac.sparsebundle" could not be created error null

    Hello...
I just got my first 2tb TimeCapsule (TC). Unfortunately, it is not backing up!! I keep on getting the message "the backup disk image "/volumes/data/GuisselleiMac.sparsebundle" could not be created (error (null))"
I've looked in many websites but can't find a solution... I've tried re-setting the TC to original settings, turning my Mac off and on, changing the name of my mac, changing the name of my mac on the network, nothing works!!!
My TC is connected with an ethernet cable to a linksys router wich is connected to the cable modem, so it is in bridge mode. I have not connected the TC to my mac, I don't think this is necessary..
    Can someone help me please!!!

My TC is connected with an ethernet cable to a linksys router wich is connected to the cable modem, so it is in bridge mode. I have not connected the TC to my mac, I don't think this is necessary..
Your TC is not directly connected to the Mac and unfortunately it does seem to matter.
The reason the TC fails is not entirely clear but it has to do with Mavericks.
Let me recommend you test what happens with the TC reset and plugged directly into the Mac by ethernet.
You will need to run it in router mode. Ignore all the errors and see if it now works.
The other suggestion is to manually mount the TC hard disk
First of all find it in the network via network utility.
Run netstat and get the current routing table.
Locate your TC on it.. On mine above it shows as tcgen4.local
So in Finder top menu.. Go > Connect to Server.
Type in AFP://TCnetworkname.local (exactly as it appears in netstat)
Or use the IP address.. the problem is that in your setup it is probably not fixed.
The current IP can be found by pinging the name. So ping in a terminal or in network utility.
    ping tcgen4
ping: cannot resolve tcgen4: Unknown host
Note how you must use the full domain.
    ping tcgen4.local
    PING tcgen4.local (192.168.2.201): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 192.168.2.201: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=4.160 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.2.201: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=3.742 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.2.201: icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=3.332 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.2.201: icmp_seq=3 ttl=255 time=3.785 ms
    ^C
    --- tcgen4.local ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 3.332/3.755/4.160/0.293 ms
So you have now established the IP..
    And type that in.
    AFP://192.168.2.201 (or whatever shows).
Once you have mounted the disk .. delete the old Time Machine setup as per A4 in Pondini.. and set up again.
It should work.. but I strongly recommend a direct link to the TC.

  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/FW1000HD/MacBkPro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 1).

I added an 1TB external usb hard disk to my time capsule as the existing 1TB hard disk is nearly full (less than 12 GB left on time capslule hard disk).  Initially, I connected external hard disk to my MacBookPro (late 2009 Intel machine) and erased most of the data on that disk. I added the disk to time machine's backup disks thru the time machine window in system preferences. Now I supposedly have both hard disks, the one in the time capsule and the new usb hard disk, available for backup. Time Machine immediately backed up my system, which consists of my MacBookPro hard disk (about 96.8 GB) and another external usb hard disk which contains about 500 GB of data, on the new extenal hard disk.Time Machine did not attempt to create a new sparsebundle at that time on my new external backup disk.  This backup was done while the new backup hard disk and the data disk were both connected to the MacBookPro and the Time Capsule was directly connected by ethernet cable to the MacBookPro. I then disconnected the two hard disks from the MacBookPro and reconnected them both via usb to the Time Capsule. Now, hopefully, the external usb backup hard disk can be written to via wi-fi thru the usb connection thru the Time Capsule? I successfully use the data disk (which contains my full iTunes Library) from the Time Capsule all of the time.
Time Machine has continued to backup small backups of a few MB to a few hundred MB to the  Time Capsule hard disk. Time Machine has attempted at least twice that I know of to set up a sparsebundle on the new external backup hard disk, but it has failed both times with the following message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/FW1000HD/MacBkPro.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 1).
Before the two attempts that I witnessed to create the sparsebundle on the new backup drive, I got the following message:
The identity of the backup disk “FW1000HD” has changed since the previous backup.
I did not change the identity of the FW1000HD, but it originally was connected directly to the MacBookPro when it was backed up. Could this be the problem? And if so, how do I fix this, so I can use this hard disk for back up from the wi-fi connection to Time Capsule?
    Gary Olson

I'm not sure this is at the root of your problems, but Time Machine manages backups to a local disk differently than to a network disk.  The Time Machine backup written to the disk while it was connected locally can't be used for network backups.

  • The backup disk image "....sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)

    Hi,
I just started using Time Machine with Time Capsule to backup my computers. It seems to work fine with my MacBook but I have not been able to backup my iMac. They are both on the same network. As far as I can tell, the settings are the same on both machines. When I do the initial backup on the iMac, I get this error message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/time capsule/bill’s iMac_0026080c21e8.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
Any ideas about what I am doing wrong would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I had the same problem and it appears that the advice 'rename your computer's name in system prefs -> sharing to something less than 25 chars and no special chars / no spaces did the trick ...
actually .. it did not .. it was trying to create a new sparsebundle ... and it came back with the same error ... the TC has been used by a different mac for 2.5 years by now, with no issue .. i should be able to back up a second mac there, right ?

My backup got interrupted and now when I try to backup I get the following message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle” is already in use.  What should I do so that I can start backing up again?

    1. Restart your MBP and try the back up again. If this fails try step #2 below
    2. Unplug your Time Capsule from the AC giving it thirty seconds or so to discharge, plug it back in and retry the back up again once you're back online.
    3. if step #1 and #2 fails, go here:

Excellent apple networking on Lion or ML is usually the issue.
Reboot the TC.. if that don't fix it.. reboot the whole network.. modem.. router.. TC.. clients.. restart in that order.
There are tools.. download the real tool if you have lion..
For ML you are stuck with toyland.. AU 6.1 .. good luck with the plastic hammer.

  • Time Machine backups to OS X Server 10.8 fail with "The backup disk image "Volumes/Backup6/macname.sparsebundle" is already in use" Error

Connecting about 100 Macs running Mavericks and about half of them are getting "The backup disk image "Volumes/Backup6/macname.sparsebundle" is already in use" error.

This was happening with our 10.8 environment and when we migrated to Mavericks, I rebuilt the OS X MacMini Server. Seems worse now with 10.9
Most discussions advise in restarting TimeCapsule or network device.  However restarting OS X Server everyday is not a solution.  Any advice in resolving this issue is appreciated.
    Thanks!  Corbin

I also had to restart the server and client after applying the "fix" I described above. Basically, no user should have multiple, simultaneous file sharing sessions on the server. But even clearing the user sessions does not resolve the problem beyond the next Time Machine backup, so I also tried disabling and enabling file sharing, but the problem also returns after doing this. Only restarting both the client and server after clearing the sessions has worked for me when I have this problem. The problem may return much later, but this work aroudn definitely works as a temporary solution.
Next time I encounter this problem I will try restarting just the server or just the client, because it is unlikely that the problem exists due to something on both systems. Server 3.x is definitely not as stable as it should be, but for my use, it is getting the job done.

Look on the right hand side .. more like this.. I am surprised you can have missed it.. we get about 10 requests a day now to fix it.. especially since Mountain Lion has made it 10x worse.
