I have a MacBook Pro that will not boot up. The apple symbol is there and the spinning wheel keeps spinning. Any idea how I can fix this?

Reinstall OS X.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
OR
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

You cannot use iCloud Storage to suppliment your iPad. It doesn't work that way.

My IPod no longer shuffles songs within playlists that are clearly set to shuffle.  It is about 3/4 full so I thought of maybe compressing the files to get more space.  Do you think that is the problem and if that might help?

Storage space on the iPod would not affect shuffled playlists or playlist shuffling, though substantially full iPods may wind up skipping songs on larger playlists after a while, and require a restart.  As for compressing the files themselves, you can automatically re-encode files to a lower bitrate by checking the box on the summary page when your iPod is connected to your PC/Mac.
As for the shuffle problem, after restarting your iPod (hold the center button and Menu for a few seconds, until the Apple logo appears), make sure you're telling the iPod to shuffle the songs in a playlist by repeatedly clicking the center button until the Suffle Menu comes up, then scroll to the right to turn it on.  From that song forward, the playlists' contents should be shuffled every time the playlist ends, or is accessed from a new song.
Shuffle does sometimes turn itself off, I've found, so double-check the setting is still on.  Also, iPods shuffle by randomly assigning a playlist order for your songs, which is different from traditional shuffle (on, say, iTunes or Windows Media Player, where the new song is determined at random upon the current track ending.  The iPod only chooses a random order of songs when you shuffle, to conserve battery life and queue up songs coming up on the playlist in the event of a shock).

    Reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Sorting and Grouping by multi-value Choice columns - any options?

I found out the hard way that SharePoint doesn't support sorting or grouping lists by Choice columns that are set to "Allow Multiple Values." I'm stunned by this missing capability, and my project has come to a complete halt without it. It's like Microsoft only implemented hafl the feature -- you can put data in, but then you can't do anything with it. You can't even use the column in a formula in another column, so you can't parse it.
I'm not posting just to gripe though. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? What do you do when you need to let people make multiple selections, and then you want to sort or group by those values? Are there any add-on products that allow this? At this point my only option seems to be to not allow multiple choices, but that's taking away a rather significant feature.
    Thanks for any ideas,
    Steve

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for the reply and the additional questions. For my situation I want to use the multi-value choice to indicate a "belongs to" relationship, as in "this item belongs to projectA, projectB, and project C. Because there are more than 10 projects, I didn't want to create a separate Yes/No checkbox for each one.
For viewing the information, I'm looking primarily for a "group by" function.  So if an item belongs to projectA, projectB, and projectC, it would appear three times, once under the grouping for each project. What I don't want is for a row that only belongs to projectA to be grouped separately from a row that belongs to both projectA and projectB. I want to see all the rows that belong to projectA grouped together, regardless of whether they also belong to other projects.
I'll look into using a grid control, but if you have any other suggestions I'll certainly listen.

  • Is it better to leave my macbook plugged it.... when.... read more!

    Hi guys,
do you think its better that i just leave my macbook plugged in all the time *if i can* ... or should I just use the battery whenever I feel like it? I know that your supposed to do at least one full drain with your computer at least once a month... but If i'm going from room to room and just feel like not dragging around an adapter, is it bad for the battery? or is it good becasue I'm using the battery more and keeping the parts moving and warmed up rather than just never really using it?
Like right now my battery status is "not charging" even though its not plugged in!
the only reason I like to keep it plugged in a lot is because I record music a lot, and can't really do that on a low battery power (if the macbook shuts off I could lose data)
or is all of this really that big a deal?

    torsenstarrow wrote:
Hey lyssa, that does help a bit. What about how my battery drains to under 95 % even when it's plugged in... and then it charges back to 100% in like 20 minutes... is that bad for the battery, because it happens when its plugged in (it slowly drains to below 95%... will that add battery cycles onto my laptop?
That's inevitable and not particularly bad. What would be bad would be that it went down to 99% and tried to top off the charge to 100%. That would mean more attempts to charge up to 100%. It's not that you don't want it to charge up to 100%, but it's going to degrade slightly every time the battery capacity gets to 100%. Near 100% is where it generates a lot more heat and tends to degrade battery capacity the most. Taking it down below a certain capacity also seems to degrade the battery. However - if you want to actually use the battery, these are normal things and the battery is considered a replaceable part.
I won't bore you with the details, but hybrid car batteries are designed to stay between 40-75% of theoretical capacity. By avoiding the extremes of charge and discharge, they can go through hundreds of thousands of these partial charge-discharge cycles while a standard use battery might go through maybe under 1000. The overall amount of energy cycling through a hybrid car battery would be maybe 30-50 times more than a standard use battery. Of course MacBook charging system isn't designed for that kind of use.
Charging a lithium rechargeable battery is an exercise in careful management of heat generation and battery life. Some of the earlier lithium rechargeable charging systems weren't very good and didn't slow down the charge as it approached 100%. You'd get overheating batteries as well as a few that caught on fire (the Sony factory fire in the 90's took out most of the world's Li-ion battery production at the time). Fortunately lithium battery charging technology has improved to the point where fires are extremely rare.

  • Using the new AppleTV, I cannot seem to find the same TV shows on the iTune Store as the older AppleTV. The selection is far more limited. For example, Modern Family is not available ... Any reason why?

I recently upgraded from an older AppleTV to the new AppleTV. The TV Shows I can access through the new AppleTV are far fewer than before. For example, I cannot find Modern Family on the iTune Store, whereas I used to be able to find it on my older AppleTV. Any reason why the selection is more limited?

I just found out the answer to my own post by browsing through other discussions. Looks like the new AppleTV only provides access to rental TV shows. Can't purchase anything ... So, the selection is far more limited. It's a drag, but at least the mystery is solved...
