HT3964 My macbook light goes off by itself...

Hello everybody!
Lately my macbook (white) version 10.5.8 goes black by itself. The computer is still on. There is still a faint image but its too dark to see. I can get it back if i recude the light all the way down (F1) and then increase it all the way up (F2) but its the same again. It lastes for few minutes. I have already tried the resetting. (Switching off, removing battery pressing power button and putting the battery back and switching on) but its still the same.
Also my macbook has become slower than before, or gets stuck sometimes.
Please help!!!

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That is a good first step for power related issues such as this.
Best of luck.

Try resetting the PRAM and SMC.  Try making the device a favorite .

    Hi Prakash,
i have already told toy to use bapi to get all the error and success messages, through which you don't need to do all the above stuffs, the first method you have shown is based on algorithm , which might not be correct each time, and the second method is handy.
You can add these code lines in your BDC which will give you all error and success messages

  • MacBook backlight goes off when lid partially closed

My 2yr old MacBook backlight has started turning off when the screen is partially closed. It works fine if the screen is open beyond a certain angle (about 90 degrees), but turns off when the screen is closed beyond that angle. Comparing to another MacBook (newer system): the backlight stays on until the screen/lid is just about closed.
It's definitely the backlight (the logo goes off as well), not the system suspending.
I'm worried this may be an early sign of a general failure.
It's well out of warranty -- any ideas what part should I look at replacing?

    Louie -
I have the mid 2009 MBP - is there a magnet inside the unibody aluminum housing? The lid latch below the track pad is smooth and seems to have some magnetic attraction to the lid itself.
    S.U. -
My problem is that the screen does not go off when the lid is closed. The problems described with the SMC reset involve the screen backlight not turning on. It also says to not reset the SMC unnecessarily. WIll that reset affect anything else?
Tried the paper clip - no joy. Will check with a magnet at work.
Is there a time setting for sleep mode on close?

  • LED Light Going Off Every Few Minutes

My LED notificiation light is going off every few minutes.  I have no new emails, I have no new texts, no new notifications.  i have turned off my phone, I have taken out the battery and put it back in.  I have changed my notification settings.  I don't know what to do next.  Help please!  I have a Blackberry Pearl Flip Phone.

    Hi,
Check and see if you have a program that has an update in Blackberry App World.  That might be it.  Also, check and see, your device might have a software update under wireless update.  It could be one of those two places.

  • Display light going off early 6070

How do I extend the time of display illumination on my 6070, it goes off too quickly. Changing power off or time out doesn't seem to make any difference, can anyone help please?
    Thanks and regards

I figured it out. I think it had to do with my old case. I was using a case for my old iPhone 3G until I got a new case for my 4S.  When I took off the case, it worked as expected - when I moved the phone from my ear and looked at it, the light went on so I could see the display.
Be interesedt to understand (if anyone knows) how the case may have affected it working differently - going dark when moving away from my ear to see the phone.
    Thanks.

  • IPod switches off when the light goes off.

When I play music in the car on my Nano, I switch it on, using shuffle. After 40 seconds or so the light of the Nano goes off and the music switches off. I restart it sometimes 8 or 9 times. Suddenly it continues to play, also for a 3 hour drive and doesn't switch off again.
I can find no explanation for this. Any ideas?

    Hi Jackie 1,
Since I'm not sure which iPod nano you have, you might want to start here:
iPod troubleshooting basics and service FAQ
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1382
which has a link to more specific help at:
    iPod Support
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/
Selecting the iPod nano (7th generation) for example, then the troubleshooting section shows this article:
iPod nano (6th generation): Music stops when display turns off
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3700
Verify that you have firmly connected the headphones to the headphone jack on your iPod nano.  The cable should be flush against the iPod with no visible gap.
    Hope that works for you,

  • HP Pavillion starts, then the pushbutton light goes off and on again before it starts

When I attempt to start this Pavillion Elite HPE, the startup button light turns on, then goes off and back on several times before the computer finally starts. Occasionally, the screen remains blank.  So far, I can eventually get the computer to start up, but I wonder if this is a sign of a failing power supply.

Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Followed by resetting the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Then if those do not fix the problem, you may need to reset your Energy Saver and Keyboard Preferences by readjusting them.

  • QUESTION - Has anyone else recently experienced an iPhone or iPad's alarm going off by itself, without being set by the user?

Has anyone else had his/her phone alarm (on the clock app) go off by itself, without being set, and with a very weird sound?
Happened to me at 11:34 pm last night (Oct 28, 2013). I'm using an iPhone 5 with iOS 6.  Sound was named something like "Orari" and sounded like a woo-woo ghostly alarm. I immediately swiped to stop the alarm and then deleted the alarm, which I had NOT set, but which seems to have set itself.  The iPhone was plugged into my iMac at the time.  There is no such sound on my phone or, it seems, anywhere (I Googled).
The night before, Oct 27, something similar happened to my iPad mini running iOS 6 ... also plugged in to recharge, but at a wall socket ... the sound was like a fire or smoke alarm.
I know it's Halloween week, but some of us need our sleep!
    Any explanations?

    Hi Littleleslie,
Have you tried resetting the device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Silver Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen comes up, double tap the Home key and make sure you don't see the Alarm app in the list of background apps. If you do, swipe up on the thumbnail for it to close it out completely.
Then all you can do is wait to see if it will let you sleep through the night!
    Good luck!
    Cheers,

  • MacBook fan going off the rails

I've seen some threads on here about MacBook fans failing to spin fast enough, and oddly I have the exact opposite problem. My fan is very normal during typical computer usage, but acts up very loudly and spins quite fast at two times: when I watch videos online, and when I play Diablo 2.
Now I'm guessing the videos make sense, but I play a lot of games on this computer that are more graphically intensive and otherwise demanding than Diablo and the fans aren't half as busy. When I start the game up, a dialog box opens for settings and such before it goes fullscreen and all that stuff starts. Today I left it at this simple little dialog box and watched my fan speed: It jumped from around 1800 to around 6200 rpm in about the span of 45 seconds. I had no other applications open nor was I so much as moving the cursor on the computer. The temp went from 120ºish to 160º F.
It worries me that the fans are working this hard for what seems like no reason. What's more, I usually play the game when I'm plugged in, but a couple of times I've tried on battery power and as soon as the fans get in full swing, the computer just shuts off. This has happened while watching videos online too.
Naturally I'm worried. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Loud fan behavior while watching online videos is normal due to the stress placed on the processor by Adobe Flash.
Regarding Diablo, you are right that it is not a graphically intensive game. However due to the age of the game, I believe it runs in Rosetta, a software translation layer that allows you to run the game on Intel processors. So there is a lot of background software translation going on, and the GPU is used very little or none at all.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro turn off by itself?

I bought my MacBook Pro 13" on August 26th 2011. Later that day while I was using it, the screen went off and it was silent. I moved the cursor because I thought maybe it went to sleep mode, but it stayed off. I waited a while and then hit a key to try to wake it up. Nothing happened. I hit the power button after about 4 minutes. Still, nothing happened. After about 10 minutes, it powered up and was on the "Log-In Screen". I logged in and everything was fine.
This is my first Apple product and I didn't know much about it so I asked a friend who has had a MacBook for a long time. She said that it was normal and that it's updating or something. "/ I didn't fully believe that, but since my computer was seemingly fine after that I didn't worry.
This random shutting down has happened several times since then and it is VERY annoying to be in the middle of typing a document and have your laptop just cut off only to come back on when it FEELS like it. It happens when I have in the power cord AND when I don't. My battery lasts for an extremely long time so I don't think I have a problem with the battery.
I've read several people's posts on this topic and I'm not really understanding the problem. I bought my laptop from my school's bookstore. I have never dropped my laptop, no water damage, etc. I have the AppleCare Protection Plan, but I don't know how many times you can have your laptop looked at before you lose the plan. Is this worth getting my computer looked at???

Yes, unless you don't mind your mac randomly shutting down.
    Please, call AppleCare.
