  • Are there any known compatibility issues with iMac and Google Chrome?

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with iMac and Google chrome. A Facebook friend who is a photographer posted recently that Chrome had ruined his iMac. He stead that it ran an update on itself that made safari and chrome unusable - slow running overall. In the end he had to reinstall his OS.
Is anyone aware of this and should I un-install Chrome off my Mac?
    Thanks,
    S.

There is nothing official but your post will attract a variety of personal experiences.   I once loaded Chrome and found myself with the dreaded MacKeeper malware, loads of pop ups and conflicts with my system.   Part of the problem is the huge range of add ons you are tempted to  take on, many of which are not as strictly tested as Apple extensions.   I would say, unless you have a specific reason, leave it alone.   The best browser is Firefox and for Macs, Safari is OK.

  • Serious Power Issues with T61

    All,
The organization I work for has started to have some serious power issues with our T61 model Thinkpads. Additionally, the problem now seem to be carrying over into our T500 Thinkpads.
About 4 months ago we started receiving consistant calls regarding users that can't power their laptops on. These are T61 and T500 laptops mounted to mobile carts in our various nursing units in numerous hospitals. These laptops sit stationary for 95% of the time and are almost always plugged into wall power. We quickly discovered that the only way to get the laptops to power on was to unplug them from all power sources and reseat the battery, after which they powered right on. We've had this problem in the past with users T61s that aren't on carts, but this is slightly different as the batteries on the cart mounted laptops are always 100% drained after we reseat them.
I'm completely baffled by this issue. I've tried every variation of 3 different carts, -- one with external battery on cart, two without -- both 90 and 65 watt power supplies, and standard and 9 cell batteries that I can come up with and the problem continues to occur. Initially we had atributed the problem to ESD because this started during the low humidity months of winter, but it is now spring and the problem is still happening.
Under normal circumstances I'd just replace the few ailing laptops and call them in under warranty, but this seems to be a general model issue as this is occuring across the board on 100+ laptops at this hospital alone. Any assistance to help identify the issue and/or how to resolve it would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

    Slider5634,
Do you have a critical situation open for this?  If so, while you are free to post here, working through the project office as a managed account should get you to the right level of support to address an issue that sounds pervasive, and may or may not be influenced by unknown environmental factors.
If you don't have a situation open, then I would urdge you to contact your account rep.  If you need help, or unsure of this, please send me a PM with your contact information, and your hospital or corp account name so I can get you the right level of assistance.
    jgm1234,
What model type T61's are you experiencing this issue with?  Can you provide some more information here about the situation?  Configuration, when this first started occuring,  environment (connected to lan, wired / wireless, stand alone, all in same physical location, or distributed at multiple locations, etc)
    Thanks!

  • Issues with iMac freezing using Mail, Safari, Chrome

I'm having issues with my iMac freezing, forcing me to hard restart my computer each time. I think I've had to powered down via power button altleast a twenty times today and yesterday. I've restarted 4 times just trying to finish this post
It seemed like I was only freezing using Safari at websites like facebook and youtube.com. So I switched to Chrome, which lasted a few hours until I started freezing on that as well.
I logged on as a Guest account and they seemed to be working fine. I thought Flash may be the issue so I re-installed but no dice. I emptied cache, cleared history from each browser, etc -- no help.
Then today I started freezing just using mail. While typing a message, auto correct attempted to correct a word and my system completely locked up from that.
I have plenty of hard drive space, RAM isn't an issue either.
Here's some of my system log just before one of my recent freezes:

I don't have much experience translating any of what I just pasted, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I uninstalled the Glims plug-in on safari, and that's seemed to cure a little bit of the problem with safari. But I'm still getting hang-ups and freezes. I'm not even noticing a pattern anymore with which apps and so forth are causing it.

  • Z87-G65 power issue with usb(port reset failed)

    All,
I'm having an issue with my motherboard and wanted to see if anyone had suggestions.  In windows 8.1 if I have my webcam or external hard drive plugged in USB.  I get this error the the USB device is not recognized and the port reset failed(code 43).  I noticed when I turn on the PC and it's booting the light on the webcam and hard drive flash like it's not drawing enough power to stay on.  The boot sticks at 9c on the screen and I have to reset.  When windows boots they turn off.    Since it's before windows boots I think this is either a MB issue or a power supply issue.  I have a corsair 750 watt power supply so plenty of power.  Any ideas?

I am plugging them into the USB 2.0 ports on the back of the motherboard, but it doesn't seem to matter where I plug them in I get the same errors.

  • Power issues with Mac Pro (early 2009)

I have a problem that seems to be related to power issues. I have to disconnect the power cord for a few hours, then, I connec it again and turn on the mac. I have replaced the power supply (by a certified technician) and the problem seemed solved. Nonetheless I added a fourth disc drive and the problem presented again. I have two video cards a 20" cinema display and a 24" LED display (Apple) connected to a GT120. 10 GB RAM.
Every time I connect the computer there is an Inrush alarm in the UPS I have it connected to.
Does anybody else have had with this issue?

As Allan mentioned, the UPS is way too small for the task. I've seen mention of folks who have 1300's that are fine, but target recommendation (and what I plan to get soon) is 1500. Also, make sure you don't have a laser printer plugged into the same UPS.

  • Anyone else having issues with iMac built-in microphone?

My mom's brand new 24" iMac (running the latest version of Leopard) keeps having issues with the built-in microphone going dead. It can be resurrected with a restart and PRAM reset (command-option-P-R), but it is kind of annoying to have to do this every time she wants to Skype or iChat. Any ideas what might be causing this? She runs a fairly clean system with few peripherals or third-party software (except occasionally an external FW drive for backups, a Blu-Ray burner [not connected at the same time], and Toast). Thanks.

Even on restart with nothing else running, she can go into the System Preferences/Sound/Input and try testing the microphone and it is DOA. We did go through all of the prefs in Skype and they are all set right, she does try the Sound Test call in Skype to see if her audio is working and that is usually the indication that something is not right. Her broadband connection varies too much to have iChat work reliably if at all. She will be installing Snow Leopard soon, and I read that iChat only requires 300kbps bandwidth as opposed to 900kbps under Leopard so there is a possibility that there will be an alternative to Skype in the near future.
All her updates are installed. Repairing permissions was done less than a month ago, but it is worth a try again. Also will have her fire up Activity Monitor to see if there is anything else taxing the CPU. I am 2000 miles away so it is sometimes hard to maintain this machine properly from a distance.
Thanks for your input in trying to solve this mystery. BTW what do you think of using an external dedicated microphone? Kind of defeats the purpose/beauty of having it built-in with the iMac...

  • Starting issues with iMac 27 i5 quad after crucial RAM expansion

I have read through a few threads regarding issues with crucial RAM upgrades in iMacs but they don't quite match what I am experiencing.
I have installed 2 x 2 GB Crucial RAM (manufacturer 0x80CE) in addition to the pre-installed 4GB. The iMac works fine without any glitches, freezes or crashes. However, when I try to start it up in the morning I can hear the HD starting up and stopping once. The start chime doesn't sound and the display stays black. I take out the 4GB and the computer starts up without any problems. I then switch it off again, install the other 2 RAM again and lo and behold: all works fine. Until the next morning. I do not entirely disconnect the iMac, which is an Apple refurbished machine, I just switch it off.
The first time that happened, I thought it was another problem like USB, bluetooth etc. So I systematically disconnected and reconnected all peripherals, I even used a USB mouse and keyboard and tried to start up from the restore DVD. So I went through all that pain.
If there is an existing thread I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction because I couldn't find anything like this on this forum.

Did you test all 4 modules one at time in a top slot as suggested, to see if they are all working?
    ● If any one of the modules fail to properly boot the iMac, factory or crucial then do not reinstall it into the iMac.
    ● If all of the modules individually boot the iMac, then try reinstalling the Crucial in the top slots, the factory in the bottom slots and Startup the iMac reseting the PRAM.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
+1. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.+
    +2. Turn on the computer.+
+3. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.+
+4. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.+
    +5. Release the keys.+
Now then if the iMac is not booting from all 8GB of RAM, then there is a compatibility problem with the Crucial RAM and you need to contact Crucial and tell them that there Ram is not working with your Factory RAM.
Why would you only want RAM in the bottom slots, I thought the idea here was to upgrade from 4 to 8GB?
The article clearly states that the iMac will not boot with only 1 module in a bottom slot.

  • Security Issues with iMac OS X

I thought that with previous OS X versions, the problem was bad enough when you set the 'Stealth Mode' to 'On' & the status was not reflected within the System Profiler utility.
Now it seems more security blunders....You're able to amend Login Items, e.g. select &/or deselect items (within System Prefs, User Accounts) without being asked to re-enter the users password or keychain password.  If someone gained access to a users computer/account (even if it was padlocked) then they're able to amend/delete/select/deselect anything in the 'Login Items' list.
Yet another major security blunder from Apple & I remember it took them months, if not years to resolve the 'Stealth Mode' issue with previous OS X versions.
Since UNIX is/was meant to be one of the most powerful & secure computer operating systems, they've made it look pretty WeaK!

Well duh. That's a bit like saying if someone can start your car then they can change the radio station. If a person has hacked your account to the point where the can amend the Login items list then that is not a security issue, in fact that's the very least of your worries. If they have that kind of access to your machine then they have everything, your data, your passwords, the whole shooting match. So, I wouldn't worry too much that the can remove an item from your Login list.
So, not a security issue, not a blunder. You need to worry about something important.

  • Power cut with imac 21" 3.2 ghz!!

Had a power cut when imac was on then could not turn imac on againtried everything ,contacted apple did what they suggested, still would not work!
Next morning tried again, still not working, went out for an hour or 2 came back pressed start button on back of imac, and it came on!!
Logs show no faults, but did recognise an improper shutdown!!
    What could be happening!!!

You might want to keep this on file the next time things go wonky:
    SMC Reset
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer’s power cord and disconnect peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
An SMC reset often helps to restore power/startup to normal.
You may want to consider getting a UPS which should give you protection against power outages and surges. Allows the Mac to do a controlled shutdown and you can also connect various other sensitive devices.
Many on here recommend APC: http://www.apc.com/site/apc/index.cfm

  • Sleep issues with iMac

I have an iMac, first gen, that when I put into sleep mode, it will wake up right away. All software is up to date, running 10.6.8.

Test after each of the following steps:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Performance Issues with iMac

    Hi all,
I've done some searching for answers to my problem, but all of the threads I found were a little different than my problem. I've had a 2.0 GHz Aluminum iMac for a little over a year now, and I only have 1GB of RAM in it. I use Mail, iTunes, Safari, and the iLife Suite for the vast majority of my time on the Mac. I back up to a 250 GB Passport drive using TIme Machine, and I was syncing with my .Mac (MobileMe now I guess) account but stopped that because it didn't seem to be working very well. I watch videos on occasion (not very often), and that's about it.
Over the last month I've been experience general choppiness and more and more spinning beach balls as I move between applications. Things seem to speed up once I get into the app and start using it. I leave Mail, Safari, and iTunes open all the time. If I get on the Mac after a while of inactivity, it takes a very long time to pull up one of these applications (like 10 seconds), and I'll experience some choppiness with the Dock bubble animations, Expose, and Dashboard. Once I get going, though, everything seems to respond instantaneously like it used to. I can switch between Mail, Safari and iTunes instantly.
I've tried using Disk Utility to repair permissions, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. I disabled MobileMe, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. I'm leaning towards a RAM problem since things seem to "warm up" and start working better, but I might just be making that up, I don't know. I'm also thinking that the fact that my iTunes library, Mail inbox, and Safari cache have grown a lot since I've started. My question is, are there good practices I should be utilizing with those three applications to keep this problem at bay? And if you think the problem may be something else, what is it? Are there steps I could take to figure it out what the issue might be? Like, is there a bare-bones configuration I could do, or some kind of performance monitoring app I could use?
Sorry for the long post, but I know it's frustrating to try and troubleshoot these problems without the complete pictures. Thanks to anyone who is able to look at this. Here are some typical stats from Activity Monitor for my machine:
CPU: CPU is almost always 95% idle and only spikes during heavy use
    System Memory:
    Free: 150-250MB
    Wired: 150-200MB
    Active: 500MB
    Inactive: 200-250MB
VM Size: 33 GB (this seems huge to me...)
    Page-Ins: 2.5GB
    Page Outs: 1.89GB
    Swap Used: 1.5GB
    Disk Activity: Occasional Spikes
Disk Usage: 165 GB free of 260 GB
Network: Quiet most of the time, spikes when I download
Process Info (Real Mem, Virtual Mem)
    Safari: 150MB, 1.3GB
    iTunes: 27MB, 1GB
    Mail: 34MB, 900MB
Dashboard, Finder, Dock, Spotlight, etc: 9MB, 800MB

    Hi,
I don't think it's a memory issue... How much available drive space is there? Right or Control click your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click: Get Info Click the black arrow where you see: Get Info Where it says: Capacity and Available, make sure your available disk space is a minimum of 10%, 15% is better. Not enough free disk space can definitely be the cause of the problems you are describing.
There's a great disk utility available that can show the size of files and folders to keep track:

  • [SOLVED] ACPI power issues with Sony Vaio Pro 13

    tl;dr backstory:
Sony VAIO Pro 13 (SVP13215CDB) laptop was working great (Win 8.1).
Installed Win10 Tech Preview. A week later, it started going to sleep randomly and on certain key-presses (perhaps after performing Sony Vaio Software updates. I'm not 100% sure). I wiped all partitions installing Win7 in legacy mode. It still went to sleep randomly.
I restored to factory default Win8.1 with Sony Vaio software up-to-date. It still went to sleep randomly.
Took it to an electronics repair shop, to see if they could fix it, and they said it can't be fixed in any way without replacing motherboard, but that's basically a new laptop.
So I turned to Arch Linux.
I have completed the basic install from the Wiki, and it no longer sleeps/shuts down randomly, but it will gracefully shutdown when certain events/keypresses occur.
I installed acpid and used "acpi_listen >> acpi.log" to determine what causes the system to perform a graceful shutdown. Here is the result of acpi.log (each line was a shutdown event):
    button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Unplugged power adapter.
button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Running on battery and idle. Perhaps battery percent update caused this?
    button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Plugged in power adapter.
    button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Fn-F1 Touchpad Disable
    button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Fn-F5 Brightness Down
    button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Fn-F6 Brightness Up
    button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Fn-F7 LCD/External Display
    button/power PBTN 00000080 00000000 # Fn-1 (Weird. It has no extra function).
As you can see, they all seem to trigger the same shutdown event.
I have seen on other posts that these ACPI signals can be disabled or assigned to other commands, which would be an acceptable workaround if it stops my laptop from erroneously shutting down. Is this doable?
Also, I was not able to reflash the Sony VAIO firmware when using Windows, as Sony's package software is amazing wouldn't allow flashing an equal or lesser firmware version. Perhaps there is a way in Arch to force a reflash if I can get my hands on the firmware blob?
    Thanks .

    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=<UUID here> rw quiet acpi=off
    Like this?
I did that, and it disabled my laptop keyboard entirely. In doing so, it disables the key-presses that would normally shutdown the laptop, including the power button. So the only way to shut it down is a hard shutdown via long-press of the power button. Thanks, though.
Update: Issue Solved. I will update post tonight. Flashing the BIOS again resolved the ACPI issues.
