That error sometimes indicates a hardware problem. See 2nd link below.

Have tried various computers and leads and it still does not work. It can take more than a few attempts before Recovery Mode will work and you have to follow the steps exactly. DFU mode is even harder to perform correctly beside of the 10 second hold. Don't stop trying. Eventually one of these methods could work for you.

I did disable the security (AVG and Zone Alarm) when I tried on my own PC. My wife's laptop which eventually got it working also uses AVG and Zone Alarm but on an XP O/S whereas my PC is Vista - maybe this is why.

My iPad was given to me from a friend who couldn't get it to work, So Im not totally sure of the steps leading up to the current issue.
Currently the iPad is stuck at the connect to iTunes screen, it doesn't appear in iTunes, not even in DFU mode. I am running Lion and it has yet to even appear in system profiler. I have tried 2 cables, both work fine with my iPhone but not the iPad. I cant tell if it charges or not, the battery is charged for now, and pluging it in doesn't tell me anything. Any ideas? or is it just a shiny paper weight?

If your profile is correct you are using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. The latest iTunes version for that OS is 11.3.1 If your profile is wrong and you have 10.9.5 Mavericks, then the iTunes version is 11.4. You cannot use Mavericks versions on Snow Leopard.

Something temporarily wrong with your internet connection?
Be aware that this is a very large file to download, it needs a strong consistent internet connection.
Have the iPhone on the charger cable too.
In the meantime read the threads in this forum about the visibility item and some other possible issues on the 4 and 4S (although a large number of people have these issues, it is still a minor percentage, but anyhow, be aware).

Under "Specific Conditions and Alert Messages: (Mac OS X / Windows)" there is the following explanation and guidelines to getting that issue resolved:
"Error 3001," "-42110," or "5103"
This alert is related to iTunes Store movie rentals and authorization issues.
Make sure you are using the most recent version of iTunes and QuickTime. They both can be downloaded free of charge.
If your iTunes is up to date, remove the SC Info folder.

That's weird...this has never happened to me before. You may have to take it in to an Apple Store.
