HT4527 Itunes can't find files!

I transfrerred my entire Itunes folder from one external drive to another.  I held option and selected the new folder as the library and it opened fine, showed files but when I tried to watch a TV show it said it couldn't locate the file.
I tried going throught the Itunes option after this of changing media folder location (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449) but this is even worse where the library data files and random folders are still on one drive and only media on the other (the point was to completely move from one d

Sounds like you may need to undo what you did and then try again. Normally moving the entire iTunes folder as a unit will work, provided everything is in the correct layout.
That said, it may be that there is another way to fix things. Select a broken track and press CMD+I to Get Info. Say no when prompted to look for the file, then look at the location given on the summary tab - it will begin file://localhost. Now find out where that same file really is. If you post back the two paths I may be able to suggest the easiest path to a resolution.

I get itunes can't find file when I tried to play a TV show I had purchased. I then checked and had this problem with an entire TV season I had purchesed. The shows were supposed to be in the cloud. I went to the itunes store, went to the tv shows and they showed that I had purchesed them. They do not show up when I click on purchesed in the store.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Itunes can not find  file. Locate file.

Sometimes I try to play a music and a message appears indicating that file can not find. I have to locate each file individually. Why this ocurr.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Perhaps you've been using Windows Media Player and it has "helpfully" renamed some of the files. Ideally you should disable all WMPs options for automatically updating your media. You might also find the following useful.
    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
You may need to amend the list of file types these programs look for. My list includes:
    .mp3 .mp4 .m4a .m4b .m4p .m4v .mov .wav .aif .mid .ipa .ipg .ite .itlp .m4r .pdf
Note the last 6 types may not be recognised as already being in the library so should either be omitted from the search or you can add (at least for Folder Watch) individual exclusions for files you know are already in your library.

  • Itunes can't find files

ok - this has probably already been asked somewhere but i've been reading and reading and everyone else seems to have split their library or failed to copy their files properly when moving them to an external, etc, etc, and i don't thik i've made any errors here...
so here is my version of the age old thing.
i keep my entire itunes library on a portable external hard drive that i take everywhere i take my computer, and that i always attach when using itunes and my ipod. i have been doing this for a few months and have not had any trouble. the default folder in preferences>advanced>etc is set to the hard drive and all the files are there.
itunes has recently taken to not finding the files i want it to play, and thus not syncing properly to the ipod and all the rest of it. when i double click a track to play it, or try to get info on a track, it dispalys the dreaded ! symbol and tells me it can't locate the file. if i choose to manually locate them they are in the default itunes file and they play fine once i have told itunes where they are.
am i going to have to do this track by track for 30 gig of music, or is some wonderful person out there going to be able to tell me how to grab itunes by the back of the neck and march it down to my external hard drive, showing it all the files at once and shouting "there they are - right there!"...?
    thanks in advance.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

nope - that's not it either! all my xml text things have identical paths to the real location of the files. nice idea, though!
i have fixed my problem, though. probably not permanently or in a very convenient way, but at present itunes is working for me again. here is how i did it...
all my files were also on my ipod, so i used a downloadble software package (music rescue, which is fantastic!) to copy all of the mp3 files from my ipod to my internal hard drive. i then dragged these and dropped them all into my itunes library. this meant that after a lot of copying i had all tracks twice, and every other track had the '!' symbol next to it.
i therefore had my library twice over, once working and once not working. i highlighted all the tracks with exclamation marks and deleted them, leaving the new version of my old library. i lost my playlists but i didn't really have any anyway, and no smart lists or anything like that. i probably also lost playcounts and the like but i don't really care about that either because i don't use itunes in that involved a way...
i am fully expecting itunes to work fine for a while, then do the same thing again, so i am leaving this as a unanswered question in the hope that someone has a suggestion that will offer a more permanent solution.
thanks to everyone for their help...

  • ITunes can't find files in library

I moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive following the instructions but after I consolidated I saw that most of the files were not moved so I dragged and dropped the missing files into the library. The problem is that iTunes does not recognize the files that were dragged and dropped into the library and each time I try to open one from iTunes I have to manually direct it to the file. Since I have thousands of files I need to find a way to do this without going one by one. Can anyone help?

  • ITunes can't find file path

A year ago I moved my iTunes Library (iTunes Music Folder) to a second internal drive following Kim Komando's instructions and all went well with no problems. I called the second drive M and created a folder called "My Music 2" where I put the iTune files.
Yesterday I reformated and reinstalled Windows XP and then copied "My Documents" back to the drive but in the restore process it deleted the folder called "My Music 2" on my second drive. I reinstalled iTunes and while all my music files are there inside iTunes including the Playlists, iTunes cannot find the file paths.
What steps do I need to follow so all the files will play, and if it's not too complicated a process I wouldn't mind putting the files back on my second drive? Is there a simple way to do all this?

My itunes file is messed up and wont work file path not found but it wont let me uninstall so i can fix.  Plus it cant fine bonjour.msi or quicktime.msi
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try an iTunes install. Does it go through properly? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?

  • Itunes can't find file, finds file, then duplicates. can anyone help?

Recently i purchased music from the itunes store. days later i went to listen and it could not locate file. so i searched and found it where it should be (in my external drive). when i played the track, it duplicated in my library!!! so naturally, i went through and deleted the duplicates (i deleted the newly added files keeping the originals). now, the files are completely gone. no originals. nothing. (and i know i will have to purchase the songs again because no, i did not back them like i should have). now when i go to play certain existing tracks (not purchased), same thing. cannot locate file, i go to my external hard drive, find the file, and it duplicates in my library, only now i am not deleting anything until i find out what is causing this. can anyone help, please?

  • ITunes can't find file - updating several file locations at once

I've got several audiobooks that are in a different location than my music library.  I recently reinstalled my laptop and restored the older iTunes folder (so I don't have to repopulate my 120gb worth of mp3 files in iTunes).
It worked well enough.  iTunes sees all my albums and by pointing the reinstalled iTunes to my music library path, it can find all my music.  I have to manually point iTunes to every mp3 (audiobook for example) to anything that isn't in the default library location though.
Is there any way I can update an entire album location without changing the library path?

nope - that's not it either! all my xml text things have identical paths to the real location of the files. nice idea, though!

I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

  • Move all my music to another folder but Itunes can't find the files!

I have all my music on my desktop in small folders for each artist.
But now i don't have room anymore, because i have to much music.
So i want to move it all in to a folder called "Music". But when i do that
Itunes can't find the files, and i have to search for each file, to find the new location instead of the desktop. How do i move my music more easily? So i don't have to synchronize it all in again, with the right album covers and that..
    Please, need some help here!

You need to open your preferences file in iTunes and click on advance then select the location of where you put the folder.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527

  • I am trying to install itunes 10.5.1 but it can't find file IXP609.TMP where can i get this

i am trying to install itunes 10.5.1 but it can't find file IXP609.TMP so stopping the upgrade.   how do i upgrade itunes?  I tried uninstalling but it can't find another file 389 so I can neither uninstall nor reinstall.  Any thoughts please?

    Hi Rick,
by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.
    Success,
    Peter

  • ITunes can't find the original file?

I have my entire iTunes collection on my iPod and, supposedly on my laptop. Yet every time I click on a laptop song, I get a message telling me that ITunes can't find the original song, do I want to look for it? I then have to run "Search", wait for the song to appear, and click on it to add it to my usable library. Then, I get two listings for the same song, and if I eliminate one listing, I get the "can't find original" message again. I have just under 60 gig of music and I don't want to search and add thousands of songs when they are already in there somewhere. I appreciate greatly any one's expertise in helping me solve this frustrating problem. Thanks!

    Hi, Mike-D.
I'm assuming your music files are all in one centeral location - the iTunes Music folder or what have you.
There are a few basic strategies for dealing with your unfortunate situation:
    1) Telling iTunes where the lost songs are on a one by one basis.
    2) Moving the songs to where iTunes thinks they are. Unfortunately, there's no way to find out where that might be.
    3) Start with a new iTunes library. Regrettably, this method will lose your playlists and related information (Ratings, Play Counts, Dates Last Played, etc.).
If that's not a deal-breaker for you, delete the current entries in your Library by highlighting them - iTunes Edit menu > Select All - and then right-clicking > Delete . You remove the entries from your Library but keep the files themselves in your iTunes Music folder, again that's assuming that's where they are in the first place.
You can then add them back into your Library by selecting the iTunes Music folder in Windows Explorer and dragging it into the Library entry in the iTunes Source List (left-hand column).

  • After an iTunes update I can't access my library as iTunes can't find my .itl file

After an iTunes update I now. Can't  access my library as iTunes can't find my .itl file. Any ideas how to rectify this?

Your iTunes Library.itl file will normally be at C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. If it isn't there should it be somewhere else (you ought to know if you deliberately moved it) or is there a Previous iTunes Libraries folder containing backups made during iTunes updates.

  • ITunes can't find missing files, though there right there?!

I switched from PC to Macbook air reacently. I have always keept an external HD for all my music. I managed to get my old iTunes Library copied over to the Mac no problem and the HD is running smoothly too. iTunes has found over 6000 files but is still struggling to locate over 1400 tracks...so here is my problem...I can literally see an entire album of missing tracks. Show iTunes where one is and then it asks if I want to find other missing tracks — AND THE REST OF THE MISSING TRACKS ARE RIGHT THERE IN THE SAME FOLDER and it says it cannot find any more of the 1,486 missing tracks. In the past it usually found at least those tracks in the same album. I have to manually click on every single tune to locate its file location now - no fun for over 1400 missing files!! How come that iTunes can read some files fine and others not at all though there are all listed in the external HD as before?
..any suddestions or ideas to find a solution?
    Thanks a lot.

Mike - please reply to the post rather than message me direct.  Others on here are far more qualified than I.
if it is saying all your photos are now missing then I would guess you have changed a folder/subfolder above where they are stored.  So if you have the photos all in ...\Pictures\Mike\Adobe and then at some point you changed the Mike folder to be called Flano then all the links will break.  If this is what may have happened rename the folder back to what it was and all the links should be OK again.  I would still recommend trying to find at least 1 of the missing photos using a search in My Computer just to ensure they are still there somewhere.
