HT4623 how do I update my iOS from 5.1.1 to 7.0

Do I have to go to an app store and actually purchase the op sys upgrade?  I have a google tv device and it needs Ios 6.0 or newer to work.

If you need a newer version of the ipad to access apps you need, you might look into selling your ipad 1. There are many ways you can do this. For example, gazelle.com will give $50.00 cash for any ipad 1 in good condition. Cashforyourmac.com will match that and right now has a holiday bonus of $25.00, so that's a $105.00. Sellyourmac.com will make a cash offer and you can counter it. Cashforyourmac.com will also meet it and give you the $25.00 holiday bonus. All have free shipping.
You can then put that money toward a new ipad and if you don't want to spend the money on a new one you might want to consider the online only Apple certified refurbished store. It's probably the only place where you can buy a refurbished ipad where each comes with a new front and back cover, a brand new battery, and a full one year warranty including 90 days of phone support and free shipping. Ipad versions come and go on the site, so if you see what you want, buy it fast. If it's not there, be patient. Most will show up again.
Please note there are many sites/ways to sell your ipad 1. Amazon and others will pay you with gift cards, but then you're restricted to using it on their sites. Too many seem to be sitting on ebay, etc., and you do not get warrantees, etc. in most cases. Some might have been stolen and new owners of them are stuck becasue someone's else's ID and info are on it, so it can't be restored. Google 'places/sites to sell your ipad 1'. There will be many.
Hope this helps.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • HT4623 How do you update iPad iOS under Settings/General/Software if you don't have a software button option?

How do you update iPad iOS under Settings/General/Software if the Software button is non-existent?

You do not have iOS 5 on your iPad so you have to update by using a computer via the latest version of iTunes. You can connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side under the devices heading. Click on the Summary Tab on the right. Click on Check for Update.
After you update to iOS 5 or later, you will have Software Update in you settings and can update via WiFi OTA. If you have the original iPad - you can only upgrade to iOS 5.1.1.

  • HT4623 How do I update my iOS on my iPad that has 5.1 ?  When I go to settings and update, it says everything is up to date as 5.1 iOS. :-(

I need to update the iOS on my iPad.  There is no option under the settings, general section.

A first generation iPad can't be updated past 5.1.1. Any device running an iOS version prior to 5.0 must be updated from iTunes on a computer, and if possible, the one it normally syncs with.

Sorry, you can't. iOS 4.2.1 is the end of the line for an iPhone 3G, there are no further updates available. You'll have to purchase a new phone in order to run a higher iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

I do not have a software update option under my general settings.  How do I update to ios 4.0 to get free apps???

... and the option to update the software from the iPod using Settings/General is not available on iOS 4 or earlier.
You can get free Apps with iOS 3.x - providing they will run on the version you have. That's dependant upon your model of iPod. So before anything else, which version of iOS do you currently have on your iPod and do you know which model you own?
