Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support. -
The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occured(9).
I got my iPTouch 16 GB on Oct.13 and on hooking to XP SP2 PC got it on the iTunes ver 7.4.3.1, was able to download music after charging. iTunes showed that a new software ver 1.1.1 for iPTouch was available(of150MB).Got it downloaded to iTunes but when it started to download to iPTouch, it failed and asked to do resotre. All this happened in just few hours of getting it.
Since then, even after reinstalling the iTunes, my iPTouch is not going beyond showing the icon of a plug and a CD.Every time iTune is able to detect the iPTouch saying that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode, you must restore it. And on doing so that error of 'The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occured(9).' comes up and it again asks to restore.
Though every time iTunes is able to detect an iPTouch, my XP does not show it in 'my computer' as any hooked device or drive.
May I request Apple and other members on this forum to help me out. It is clearly a software problem.
Many thanks in advance.
JetavyaThanks to all members for sharing in. In my case finally, I got a brand new replacement from Apple through their Authorised Service Provider,A-1 Infotech, Mumbai. Since in India, Apple does not have a widespread presence, the service and support I got was amazing.
In my case though I never came to know whether the problem was of software or hardware, but the simultaneous step I had taken was to call the toll free number of Apple in India and got my problem registered. Since the iPod Touch was under warranty, I got it replaced without much hassels. I advise the same path for other users and if possible get the additional Apple Care Protection Plan for additional one more year.
Though I have yet to find out how to avail that Protection Plan in India.
Best wishes,
Jetavya -

How do i fix [The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. an unknown error occured -1]
I've been looking through all the discussions regarding similar problems (with different error codes), but all i know is that I cannot restore, I cannot turn on/off my iPod, and I cannot find a discussion to fix this issue. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. (P.S. holding down the power and home buttons does squat)
The cable wasn't the issue. It was simply turning off every piece of ad/mal/spy/virus scan app that I had running inorder to allow the restore to occur. (problem solved)...

The IPOD 'Ipod' could not be restored an unknown error occured (6)
just Got my Ipod touch and when I tried to set it up, I got a message that said, 'Itunes has detected an IPOD in recovery mode, you must restore this IPOD before it can be used with Itunes'
Then I followed up the instruction on my computer but then another subject came up (as what I wrote on the subject)
I repeated 3-4 times but I got the same message !
How to fix it ? thanksWell, this problem could be an easy fix. Just enter DFU Mode, and then you should be able to restore with no problems. A video on how to do this, is right [Here|http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=PbTI2quSqew]. There was a better one, but it has been removed. Be sure to have your timing pretty precise, or else it won't work.
Hope this helps,
Darie. -
my ipad mini is stuck in dfu mode trying to restore it with ios 7.0.2 it completes the bar(restoring ipad software) then it gives me the ipad could not be restores. an unknown error occured(14)
Are you using a valid Apple charger that came with the iPad?
Attempting to use a computer USB port, an incompatible charger, or attempting to charge via a wall socket that only receives power from a wall switch — can all lead to a low, or depleted battery condition. Has this iPad been wet, or dropped?
Verify all of the above, and correct. If the iPad still cannot hold a charge, consider taking to an Apple Store, or authorized service provider to evaluate it. -
I am trying to restore software on my iPad which is connected to my PC with iTunes when i'm in recovery mode a warning comes up
"The iPad could not be restored an unknown error occurred (1604) This i have discovered probably a USB timing problem ?
I have followed all suggestions but still my iPad screen is locked with a iTunes logo and a USB cable beneath it, wish I had never bothered
to update it now. Any help would be appreciated. rgWhen I restart my iPad the connect to iTunes comes up and stays on until it shuts down again, I have read a report from Apple support suggesting I reinstall iTunes so I might try that again and also your suggestion which i shall also try, but thanks again - rg1547

These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart. -

From the article the question was posted from:
Errors related to third-party security software
Error 2, 4 (or -4), 6, 1000, 9006
Follow the steps to troubleshoot security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. An incorrectly set default packet size can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or phobos.apple.com isn't blocked by a firewall or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under "Advanced steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw)" below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.
Restore using a different computer.
