HT4623 Under my Settings-General on my iphone 4, there is no "software update" option.  How do I update my phone?

I am trying to update my iphone 4 and I read the instructions online and it set there should be a "Software Update" option under "Settings" "General", but there is not. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I have an iPhone 4 and for some reason I'm not able to update the software. I go to Settings then General but it doesn't even have a Software Update option. Am I missing something?

With iOS 4, the only way to update your software is connected to iTunes.  OTA (over the air) updates were not available until iOS 5.  You will need to connect your iPhone to a computer and use iTunes to download and install the iOS updates on your iPhone (at least until your iOS version is 5.0 or higher).

  • HT4623 General Settings in my iphone 4 doesn't have software update option.  Why?

General Settings in my iphone 4 doesn't have software update option.  Can anyone tell me why and how to put the option in?

Hi, I've been to the Apple store - it was just matter of downloading the most recent software IOS 5 - once this was done the sotware update option appeared in General Settings.

  • HT4623 my iphone 3g does not have software update..... Go to Settings General Software Update

my iphone 3g does not have software update..... Go to Settings > General > Software Update ...... NOT THERE

No. It doesn't. That is only present if you are already running iOS 5 or higher.
Since the iPhone 3G can NOT run anything higher than 4.2.1, you will never see it on that phone.

  • HT5567 I'm not sure how to download ios6 on my ipad 2.  There is no software update under my general settings.

How can one download the ios 6 onto the ipad 2 when there is no software updates under general settings?  Do I need to reset network settings?

You'll need to connect your iPad to a Computer running iTuines (Can be a Mac or a Pc doesn't matter) and follow the update prompts.
You'll probably want to back up the iPad before updating though.

  • HT4972 My iPhone 4 does not allow me to update my phone there is no "software update" selection in general settings

My iPhone 4 does not allow me to update to ios5.  There is no "software updates" listed under settings and general where this is usually found?

You will need to connect the iPhone to the computer and iTunes and update in that fashion. Since the OTA update ability was introduced in iOS 5, if your device has an iOS of less than iOS 5, you will have to do it that way. After updating, you will be able to do subsequent updates OTA.
Connect to iTunes, select the phone in the device pane and select update. Also, you will not be able to update to iOS 5, you can only update to the latest iOS, which for the iPhone 4 is iOS 6.1.3.

  • HT4623 I'm trying to upgrade an ipad and in the system under general there is no software update.  What do I do?

I'm trying to upgrade an ipad and in the system under general there is no software update.  What do I do?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

when i go to settings then general there is no software update? i am trying to up date my phone...

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.
