We're you backing up to a computer using iTunes? If so, restore the backup from there.

On a Mac, PhoneView is one option (I've been happily using for a year or two). TouchCopy is another (have not heard anything negative about it).
You'll only get back the low-res versions that were downsized when synced to the phone, but better than nothing.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run Option #4 to rebuild the database
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library. Select the checkbox to include orphaned photos.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I restarted iphoto and realized that the photos had disapered. The events are availbble into iphoto but they are empty, the photos have dispeared. I can not believe they disapeared as they have been imported and read once, they must be hidden somewhere on the disk? Is there a way to find where they are?

Assuning you're running iPhoto 9 or later try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

Is there a way to retrieve your backup files from iCloud? Wehn you backup locally, you can get to the actual backup files. Is there a way to retrieve these from iCloud? I want to actually examine the individual files.

I could find an external driver to get photos before.

Try disabling Norton and syning. If that doesn't help try uninstalling iTunes and all of its components by following this guide: Windows XP or Windows Vista/7, then reinstall iTunes. You must follow this guide exactly or it will not be successful. Note: uninstalling iTunes will only remove the application; it will not touch your iTunes library or data.
If you continue to have trouble you can use an app like PhotoSync to wirelessly transfer your photos to your computer while you continue to try to troubleshoot this.

I would like to know how to move photos from camera roll to other albums. I don't want to leave all my photos in camera roll. I wan't to do this using a PC.

In terms of windows explorer/camera wizard you won't see synced folders/albums that are on the iPad. You can only add photos to albums/folders that you synced from your computer by adding the photos to the folders on your computer and then re-syncing - on the iPad you can only add/copy photos to albums that you've created directly on the iPad.
So you will need to copy the photos to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083. Then organise them on your computer into folders and then re-sync them.

I have the same problem. I bought an iPod Touch 4G 64GB last June. After upgrading to the new iOS 5, most of my pictures, apps and music is gone. Every time I try and recover my backup the system crashes. I tried to call their technical support to restolve the problem but I was told that I had to pay $29 to solve the problem that they created. This is a disgrace.
People are saying restore the iPod but with mine that didn't help.

An iOS device cannot be tracked without an internet connection. All you can do is physically look for it. Your camera roll photos are included in your iCloud backup. Should you be unable to find the phone, restoring the backup to another iPhone (or iPod touch) should recover them. Bear in mind that Apple will delete iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity so be sure to access the backup before then.
You can also access photo stream photos from the last 30 days by setting up iCloud on your computer and enabling my photo stream (see https://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/).

If you didn't configure Windows Phone backup option or use VZW Backup Assistant then all is lost.
If you did go with Windows Phone native backup and you use an Outlook account you should find your photos and videos on OneDrive. I'm not sure how much VZW Backup Assistant backs up but you would need to start a restore from that software and see what's preserved.
With any OS installs/updates a backup is always best to first.
