I purchased a first generation Ipad and have IOS 5.1 and am trying to install IOS 7.0.1 but it keeps saying my Ipad is updated with the IOS 5.1, how do I install the IOS 7.0.1

That iPad model isn't capable of running iOS 6 or newer.

I'm being "gifted" a couple dead 1st gen iPads. Both have dead batteries and supposedly no OS. Included will be new batteries. I'm sure I can swap batteries (YouTube has a video for everything). I just d/l'ed iOS 5.0. I've never dealt with Apple before (I'm a Linux guy...shrug) so I don't know jack about this.
How can I install iOS 5.0 on my "new" iPads? I'm planning on using one for myself and giving one to a local, home schooling family that can't afford a "toy" like this (even if this "toy" would make a good learning base).
Do I just plug the iPad into the computer and hit a few keys on the iPad screen? Or is there more to it?
Thanks for all your help. I've installed Windows and Linux OSs via both USB (thumb) drive and CD to a computer and Android OSs via both BT and USB cable (to/from my computer). I'm not a complete computer noob but know enough to break things pretty well.

Apple software goes through checks and balances to make sure the latest software for that version of hardware is what gets installed. If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

It's too bad that ipads that are only on the market for three and a half years are for many, obsolete because they can no longer be updated. They make some apps useless because they have been upgraded to an ios system that you can't use.
In case you need to update your apps, you might want to upgrade to a newer ipad. They're expensive, but you might consider a trade-in and get money toward a new ipad. Something you might also want to consider is the Apple certified refurbished store (online only.)
They have ipads that come and go, sometimes quickly. Each comes with a new front and back cover, a brand new battery, and a full one year warranty, including 90 days phone support. They come with a cable in a new white box. Shipping is free. We have refurbed ipad 2s and they have been great.
If you sell your ipad1 you can use that money toward a nerer ipad. Gazelle.com is taking ipad 1's back (all gb) for $70.00 dollars. Sellyourmac.com is giving $81.00/16gb, $86./32gb, and $90./64gb for an ipad1 in good condition. And you can make a counter offer. Casforyourmac.com only gives quotes after you give in address, so can't help you there. And as designphotoguru pointed out (see below) they'll add $25.00 to your highest offer. If you counter offer to sellyourmac.com and they accept it, then go to cashforyourmac and they'll addd $25.00. So you could end up with over $100.00.
While most would go for the newest to keep updated longer, note that the ipad 2 16gb is still being made so ipad 2 still gets the updates, and ipad 4's are only a little more $ than the ipad 3 which was discontinued after only months on the market.
So please take a look at the post below and hope you enjoy whatever will make you happiest even if that means sticking with your ipad1. (our family does not feel the need to always have the newest.)

. As Apple said in June, iOS 7 is not compatible with the 4G iPod.
All the iOS devices compatible (iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, and 5G iPod touch) with iOS 7 have at least 512 MB of memory (RAM). The 4G iPod only has 256 MB

Hook your iPad into your computer and open iTunes. GIve it a couple of minutes to get going, then click on the name of your device, then the main summary page. In the middle you'll see a software update button/area. Click on check on updates and update and follow the prompts.
it SHOULDN"T redownload but if you've already got it should just install.
I'd suggest that you first do a complete sync before you update, that way you have a good backup to restore your device from if the upgrade doesn't go perfect.

You should have an iOS4 firmware available in your computer. If you want to upgrade, simply hold the Shift button + click the upgrade button so you can choose what firmware you want your iPod to be upgraded. Choose the iOS4 firmware and that's it.
