I just recently upgraded from a 4S to a 5C.  I backloaded the 5 from Itunes and now everytime i plug into itunes, it asks if I want to set up as new or restore from a previous backup.  Why is it doing this.  I did it twice yesterday.....  In addtion, those are the only options I have.  I cannot do anything else unless I choose one of the two.  Zero options.  Phone works fine though.

I figure that either of those options will result in losing all SMS and data created since the last backup. Not a major loss, but ** annoying when nothing has changed and the time it will take to restore.
When was the last time you synced your iPhone with iTunes since the backup is updated as the first step during the sync process?
Is there anyway to recover this WITHOUT having to do a full restore or set up as new?
    In a word, no.
If I do restore or set up as new, how do I know it's not going to do the same thing tomorrow (like a few other forums threads I've read indicate might happen)?
There is no way to know for certain but I've never experienced the same in the first place. I venture to say having to do this is the exception rather than the rule.

  • HT201269 iTunes is recognizing my iPod as a new iPod even though I have my old stuff restored to it and it says the name of it but still asks to set up as new iPod or restore from a backup.

iTunes is recoznizing my iPod as a new iPod and only gives me the options of set up as new iPod or to restore from a backup. I put my old backup on it and everytime I plug it in it still recognizes it as a new iPod. I've tried restoring it several times and it doesn't help anything and I've also uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it but it didn't help. Please I really need some help I can't download any music with it doing this.

There maybe better ways to do this, but this worked for me when things stopped working a couple of updates back.
Try this; Make sure your stuff is backed up on your computer first. plug the iPod to your computer and do the restore to factory setting. Then set up as if it's a brand new out of the box iPod. (DON"T use your backup copy) Go through all the steps of first time set up. Once complete, add back all your stuff, music, apps, pictures, etc. from your computer. I know it's a pain, but it worked for me.
By the way; the reason I'm doing this total restore is the RED square in the RED circle. All my music downloaded from CDs became unreadable / unplayable today, (worked fine yesterday-- today crap!!) and none of the fixes listed in this forum would work for me. So I started over, after the restore, the RED circles are gone and my music is playing.
    Hope it works, Good Luck!

  • I have restored my new iphone 5 but everytime i plug it back into iTunes i am asked if i want to set up a new phone. Which i have already done!!

I have restored my new iphone 5 but everytime i plug it back into iTunes i am asked if i want to set up a new phone or restore it. I have already set it up and tried to restore it again thinking this might help but i still keep getting the same message. The phone is recognised and shows up in devices but i cannpt sync apps or anything to it.

Have you updated your iTunes on your computer? WIth a device running iOS7, you need iTunes 11.
When you removed iTUnes, did you see something named 'apple mobile device support' or something like it? (The exact name varies from operating system to operating system). If you see that, uninstall it too. That's the drivers for your iPhone and they should self-install when you plug your device in.
If all that is fine, have you checked your cable and USB port? a malfunctioning cable can keep you from syncing.

  • Iphone 5 won't restore from previous backup

I can't get my phone to restore from a previously synced version. I restored my phone thinking I could fix another issue  (text messages not deleting) and now I have a phone that won't restore. I run through all the processes to restore and the phone restarts just like iTunes tells me it will do and then it starts all over again. I have tried this at least 10 times with the same results.

I have the same problem. I upgraded iphone 5 to iOS 7.02 and it went into recovery mode so I had to restore to factory settings. After that it gave me the option to set up as new phone or restore from backup. When I chose restore from backup, everything seems to work fine then it restarts and apple logo comes on and bar underneath never loads/advances. It never gives an error message. So at this point my only option seems to be set it up as a new phone. Very frustrating. Did you ever find a fix for this?
Note: I've tried restoring from both itunes and icloud backup.

  • I set up my iPad mini without a computer and now, when trying to connect it to my mac it asks if I want to set up as new iPad

I set up my iPad mini without a computer and have been using it for months.  Now, when trying to connect it to my mac it asks if I want to set up as new iPad or restore from back up (Which I don't have).
Is there a way I can connect to my computer and itunes without losing everything I've done on it for the past months?

Go ahead and set it up as new. It's just new as far as iTunes is concerned. Shouldn't result in the loss of anything.

  • I'm upgrading to the 5, do i set up a new phone or Restore from backup?

I'm upgrading to the 5, do i set up a new phone or Restore from backup?

That depends if you want your current data on your new phone, then restore from backup.  IF you don't then set up as new.

  • How to restore a previous backup on iphone 5c

I just bought an iphone 5c yesterday and I accidentally restored the phone to a previous backup (from my old iphone) when I was trying to sync my music from itunes.  How do I retrieve my info from before I did this?  Any help is greatly appreciated

They don't exist. Backups are incremental; that is, a new backup is created by just saving changes from the previous backup. If you have an iCloud backup it saves the 3 most recent. But on your computer it saves only the most recent and the most recent of the previous iOS version.
For the future, if you have a Mac, you can force a new backup by going to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Right click on a back and choose "Archive" from the floating menu. The next backup will be from scratch. You can also restore a previous backup from Time Machine.
You can sort of do this with Windows if you regularly back up your user data.

  • My computer says it's been synced with another device besides my own, and it wont let me do anything in itunes until I either start up the device as a new one, or restore from another back up, and i dont know what to do!

I got the new ipad several weeks ago, and since i had the ipad 2 before it, i transfered the data from it to my computer and gave the ipad 2 (techinally new since it had nothing on it) to a family member. Now, when I go to itunes on my computer with the new ipad, it says that the computer has already been synced with another device, and my only two options are to set the ipad up as a new one or to restore from a backup (my up-to-date backup for the new ipad does not come up on itune's list of backups that went to my computer). So now because of this, there is no way i can put anything from my computer to the ipad, or even look at it through Itunes on the computer! Is there any other option for me?! I need help now!!

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

  • How to restore Ipad from previous backup that is not the restore list?

I did a firmware update for Ipad from 5.1.1 to 6.1
I backup my Ipad before I did it at 4.46am
Then I restore my Ipad so it will install IOS 6.1
However I accidentally set it up as new device with a differrent name (default suggested by itune which is "AL's Ipad")
Then I try to select my previous backup called "Ipad 3"
But I cant see "Ipad 3" from my restore list.
So can I restore my "Ipad 3" backup?

If you went through the process of restoring your iCloud backup, then tapped Show Older Backups when asked which backup to restore to and the backup you're looking for isn't listed, there's no way to recover it.  You could check to see if you have an older backup on your computer that would have the data you're looking for by opening iTunes and going to Setting>Devices and checking the Backups list.

  • How to Synch iPad 3 with existing itunes when accidently chose set up as 'new' instead of 'restore from backup'

Hi there, I have just plugged in an ipad 3 to set it up - I would like to synch it with an existing itunes account and stupidly instead of saying 'restore from back up' I chose set up as 'new', I now can't synch with my itunes, please help!

You don't have the option to sync to your existing iTunes library? You should get that option. If iTunes tells you that it will erase the iPad and sync with the new library isn't that what you want? ... to sync with your own iTunes library again?
You can look to see if you maybe have another backup from which you can restore - but if you auto sync that will just create another new backup that you don't want to use.
See if you have another backup first - from the iTunes menu go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and look for another backup.

  • Cannot restore from previous backups

    Hi,
I stupidly restored my iphone to original settings earlier.
I am now trying to use one of several backups however, itunes will not let me choose them when i choose to restore from backup...
Please advise what is wrong and how i can save my iphone!
    Thanks

Ah, in which case you have no backups to go back to ....
As I briefly mentioned earlier, every new backup event overwrites the previous one. When you mistakenly reset the device, you must have allowed it to do a backup before restoring it and so that backup overwrote your previous backup.
Unless you have any hard disc backups, you may have lost the lot.
Paid Apps can be downloaded again for free though and you should still have your iTunes library to resync as new though.

  • Problem restoring from previous backup

I tried to upgrade my 3GS to IOS5 but something went wrong part way through. Although I now have IOS 5 the phone has been wiped. I took a backup before I started and have tried to restore to that but it says now that the backup is either corrupt or not compatible with the phone! As part of this process I had to start the upgrade again and it took a later backup which I guess is not worth using at all. I would like to restore from an earlier backup than the two that it is giving me options for. How do I do this?
Also of concern is the well over a thousand photos that I had on my iphone - how do I now retrieve these?

    Graig,
Try backing all the way out to the "Welcome" screen and then proceed forward again and see if it see backups now.
Also, if the drive had gone to sleep or spun down before you got to the point of choosing a backup disk, that might explain it. Try backing out to the "Welcome" screen again, switch the external drive OFF wait 10 seconds, and switch it back ON. Now proceed with the install.
Let us know if this helps.
    Cheers!
