HT4959 can you update old iphones?
I've never done a software update on my iphone 3... Now I'm trying to figure out if it'll work, when I select update, it gives me a network connection error?
I really dont know if its a 3g or 3gs but itunes says that software version 6.0.1 is available .. When I click on the update it says, "The iphone software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."
Have you guys seen this alert before? I cant seem to find anything in my firewall settings, or antivirus that would block it from connecting. And my wifi is working fine, both laptop and phone are showing full wireless service and my home router as the source.

I have a friend who has an old 3GS and offered it to me since my phone is older, I wanna get it off him. I know you can get them free with a 2 year contract, but I still have a year left and just wanna have the phone switched out. Is that possible or are the 3GS phones that Sprint carries now new models or something that support CDMA?

You need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or newer to sync the iPhone 5; this may require buying a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store. OS upgrades aren't covered by the warranty.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes, update first, Settings > General > Software Update.
Then navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from. -

Vinod is correct in that you can build a new app that's iPad-only, but if you try to submit it as an update to the existing app, Neil is correct--Apple will reject it because it's considered a downgrade. You either need to stick to the universal app and do something like create a single iPhone folio that refers users to the iPad, or you need to submit it as a new app.

You have to delete the old account, provide the password for the ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud. Provided you are signing back into the same account, your iCloud data will reappear on your device when you sign back in.
To avoid losing photo stream photos that are not in your camera roll, save them to your camera roll before deleting the account (open your my photo stream album, tap Select, tap the photos, tap the share icon -- box with upward facing arrow, then tap Save to Camera Roll). -

I am still running iOS 3 (1.3) on my iPhone 3GS and I'm happy with it - but all the new apps requires iOS4 and now I'm sick of this. I want iOS4 (and not iOS5, cause it will drain my battery as far as I've understood).

I have never jailbreaked an iPhone so I don't know too much about "backdoors" into my iPhone.The only Firmware in the iOS 4 series that Apple is still signing for the iPhone 3GS is 4.1. So you could restore to 4.1. You will have to download the 4.1 IPSW from Apple, and then install it with iTunes, Option Click Mac or Shift Click Windoz, on the Restore Button and then select the 4.1 IPSW on your computer. The current iTunes may give meaningless Errors, I doubt because you are Upgrading. But if Error Message is given you will have to search the Web for ways to Exit Recovery.

The first time an iPhone is connected to iTunes that is used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device or to set up the iPhone as a new iPhone.
The former does as provided - it transfers the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device to the iPhone replacing all data on the iPhone that is included with the backup being transferred. The latter does nothing allowing you to make your various selections for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
This is designed to be done right away with a new iPhone.
If you don't have a backup for the iPhone with iTunes on your computer and don't have an iCloud backup that hasn't been updated since choosing to transfer the backup for your iPod Touch to the iPhone, the data that was on the iPhone is gone. -

If you have iPhone 3G, the latest and greatest is IOS 4.2.1.
If you have iPhone 3GS or later, you can only update to IOS 6.0.1.
For iPhone 5 and iPad mini, you can update to IOS 6.0.2. -

You are running an ancient OSX on your Mac. Since you didn't share what Mac model and model information with us, we cannot tell you if you are able to upgrade or not. You need OSX 10.6.8 at a minimum to run iTunes 11.2
