What happens when you use the instructions on the page that you posted from ? You have a recent version of iTunes on your computer, and are you getting any error messages when trying to update ?
To update via your computer's iTunes, connect the iPad to it and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad via the File > Devices > Back Up menu option.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar (you can enable the left-hand sidebar on iTunes 11 on a PC via control-S), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side of the iTunes click the Check For Updates button.

Not exactly. Just because apps have updates available, does not mean they are required. You will not be able to update apps to get the new features and looks but the version of the apps you currently have should work as they do right now even if they are no longer available in the app store. Just be sure to backup up your device and your iTunes library.
My frustration is also in the lack of options.. I have a 15 yr old Win 98 machine that I could still use if I wanted to – albeit with outdated, old, but still functioning software. I try to update my ipod touch 4th gen. to the new iOS 4.3 software and the thing loads and after the 7-8 minutes or so, when it says "processing file" a pop up says that the network connection has timed out, and to check my network settings. I've tried several different times and get the same result. My wi-fi is working with all three bars and my computer is also connected to the internet. I've tried restoring it but it says I have to get the new software and then I get the same result( this time ipod not restored).... What's going on with my ipod? Anyone help?

Have you tried to see if you have the newest version of iTunes? Also, it may help if you try the following steps.
Download iOS from a third-party website (i reccomend http://whited00r.com/) (as this is a full operating system, it is a big download and may take time on a slow internet connection)
Unzip the file.
After unzipping, you should now have a .ipsw file.
Open iTunes
Connect your device and make sure you take a back-up of it first (if you don't all your data will be erased)
Now, while pressing the Restore button, hold down the Alt key (for Mac) or the Shift key (for Windows).
You should now have a window open asking you to choose a file.
Choose the file you just downloaded from whited00r.com
Press OK
It should start replacing your current OS to the new one.
When this finishes, your device will restart
Click restore from (whatever your old device was called)
It will put back all your apps and information

I just updated my original iPad 32 GB WiFi to iOS 5.1 about fifteen minutes ago. But I did it with the system restore feature in iTunes. So it wiped out everything on my iPad. But it did work. Then I restored an earlier backup and all went fine. Maybe you could try backing up your iPad and then using Restore to get it back to factory settings to see what happens.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

That's not so good! I found 5.1 was fairly stable but since upgrading to 5.1.1, Safari crashes frequently and it totally refuses to read some PDF's that have been readable in iBooks previously.
My local Apple Store said the problem was that my IPad (2 years old) is obsolete and I should buy a new one!
I know people have complained about IOS6 because of the mapping - but I would welcome anything that made it crash less!
Maybe related but I used to charge the battery every three days (I just use it for email & web in the evenings). Since the upgrade, I have to charge every day. 3 hours use tonight and it's down to 20%.
I've completely disabled iCloud (again a shame because I really liked the syncing with my iPhone4s) and the only two apps that are ever active are Safari & Email.
Any ideas? Should I just accept defeat, eBay this one and buy a new one?

I want to update my 3rd generation iPad to iOS 8 through the OTA update. I have enough space as it requires 5.8GB and I have almost 10 GB. I clicked on download and install. It did download the iOS update file and then it says, "Preparing Update." In that part, it is very slow and suddenly it freezes then reboots my device to apple logo. When it goes back, it still says, "Preparing Update" and then it will freeze again and reboot. I don't know what to do. I want to have iOS 8 so bad.
