Macbook Pro no longer support Apple Cinema Display after graphic update 1.0
I recently updated my system to ver. 10.5.2 and after that I updated to graphic system 1.0. After that my macbook pro began to have several problems dealing with my 23" Apple Cinema Display.
1- if started in 'closed lid' mode it gives me a kernel panic (shaded screen) error during start up
2- if started in 'open lid' mode it boots fine but whether i decide to close the lid it fails to wake from sleep mode. It starts for one or two seconds and then it gets back to sleep.
So, I made a long time taking test during the weekend and after several "archive and install" I found that this issue is related to the leopard graphic system update 1.0. Somehow this update mess up the way that macbook pro deals with my Apple Cinema Display.
I hope that someone at Apple will address this issue toward a solution in a short time.
I appreciate any other experience in this sense by anybody.

Check out the 'Apple Displays' forum and you'll find that you are not alone. MBP/Cinema Display relationship broken since graphics updater. Hopefully an Apple patch soon, or it's time for an Archive and Install w/o updating the graphics.

I have a MacBook Pro 2011. I allowed updates to install for iTunes software and Microsoft office (I think). After rebooting, computer wouldn't progress past grey apple screen with loading circle. No progression bar ever appeared. It just sits and spins. I tried rebooting with Command + Option + R + P and hearing the chime twice....this did not work.
I also tried Command +Option+R which took me to internet recovery. From there, I chose reinstall Mac OS X Lion 10.7 but it says my hard drive is locked so I wasnt able to select it. What do I do???? I you upgraded to OS X 10.8, then use RecoveryHD by holding Command R at boot time (no option) and reinstall OS X over itself that way so your installing Mountain Lion.
Also Disk Uility can be used to Repair the Macintosh HD parttion.
Also you can use that RecoveryHD to format and install OS X onto a external drive, then option/alt key boot from it and access your files on the non-booting internal drive before erasing, reformatting and reinstalling OS X fresh.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive

I am in deep trouble with my wife so any help would be gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Mavericks became available I upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro 2011 to use the new OS version. Ever since then, the Macbook has been running noticeably slowly. In particular, Mail is almost unusuable taking minutes to open and showing long delays while moving around messages, folders, etc. Excel and Word are also much slower, Safari is slow, in fact just about everything is grinding.
Any ideas on what can I can do to improve things and apease my unhappy wife would be much appreciated.

Tried to update the EFI on Macbook Pro 2011 & Crashed?
Hey all
So this is my new Macbook Pro 2011! FIrst apple producct ever!
I installed a bunch of updates to my mac before & they worked fine- without issue
but i recently tried to install the Macbook Pro 2.3 Firmware Update & the thunderbolt firmware update but something went horribly wrong
The mac was plugged into the wall and the magsafe charger was lit green- and the update downloaded & seemed to have installed- but on reboot i got a horrible single beep & the HDD went out...
Then after that it tried to reboot on its own 3 more times b/ci heard the fan- but it was without a display [just a black screen but no picture] & but the HDD kept getting cut off...
I held down the power button for 7 seconds & it finally booted normally after a prolonged apple logo screen
& now it seems to be working fine...
can you guys tell me what the heck just happened? My macbook crashed? :[ /?

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro and I also just updated to the Macbook Pro 2.3 EFI Firmware Update. Mine updated fine but when the MBP restarted, it also made that single long single beep and it was slow to restart. Once it restarted, everything seemed to be normal but now my System Updates don't work. Everytime I click on System Updates, I get an error that says it crashed. Since your System Update says the EFI Firmware Update is still available and my System Update now crashes, I'm thinking the update messed up something with System Update. I've just spent weeks trying to get my OS X Lion working so this really ***** to have the EFI Firmware Update cause me another problem. Anyone with suggestions? -

Did you try more than once? If so:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Macbook Pro 2011 clamshell mode broken by latest software update?
After installing the latest MacBook Pro software update and EFI update through Software Update in the evening May 4, I am unable to enter clamshell mode any more. It used to work before. After waking up in the clamshell mode, the machine promptly goes back to sleep. On subsequent attempts to wake up the system, the laptop itself appears to wake up (at least the sleep light stops blinking) but the display does not even wake up. I can still work with external dsisplay with the lid open but this is highly annoying. I have reset the PRAM with no effect. The machine is a 2011 MBP, 15" inch, 2.2 GHz quad i7. Keyboard and mouse are wireless Microsoft desktop but the problem is also present with wired peripherals.
Does anyone else see this problem after installing the latest patch?Okay, I'll add my frustration here as well.

But I'll just copy over what my main problem was...
Whenever I plug my computer into my Cinema Display (with the computer closed) it won't wake up fully. The status light will come on, any external hard drives will spin up, but the display won't turn on and the computer will go back to sleep.
I have to restart the computer manually to get it to work normally, and if I disconnect it while it's between the sleep and wake mode and try to open it, the backlight will come on but the screen will remain black, causing me to have to force restart it.
This is in addition to my first problem with the backlit keyboard not coming on automatically after sleep, which was temporarily fixed by resetting the SMC, but it goes back to the problem after a week or so.
What could be causing either of these problems? Could it have something to do with BootCamp since I have it installed, or is there a defect?
I would bring it back to Apple, but there's a small dent in the front right corner, and I'm afraid they would deny any problem I have.
I took my MacBook Pro (2011, i7 2.2, 17") into the Apple Store on Monday, and after about an hour of attempting to replicate the problem with a different monitor, there was only one time where there was any sort of problem.
The employee told me to see if there will be a fix, or otherwise they will replace the logic board for me.
One thing I'd like to add as a note...
It seems that the problem is more prominent when I have my computer with everything on it as usual. As in, before I took it to the Apple Store I performed a clean install of OS X, and that may be related to how bad the problem is, any opinions?
I had attempted at reinstalling OS X from a Time Machine Backup, but the problems continued shortly after completetion. In addition to this, I clean installed OS X, and manually reloaded my applications and media, hoping that the problem had stemmed from some kind of broken file system that could be repaired by a new install.
But no matter how I do it, the problem comes back despite the method. It is really something I want fixed, as I pretty much only use it in clamshell mode when home... -

Java Test indicates that Java 6 is running well on my Mac. But when trying to run online applications the mentioned error message appears.

unfortunately that fix for my camera Powershot G6 does not work or apply as the view pictures switch is different on G6 is not usable during download as once you plug in DC/USB cable it turns off, and makes no diff and problem still exists exactly as you just described.

it has been 17 days since apple promised to get back to me within 3-5 days hopefully with a solution, but I have still not heard from them.
They blew me off, i guess, probably i will have to wait for new Yosemite OS update, which they pre-warned me could take as much as 6 months.
I cannot believe apple released this new update with such major bug issues for camera downloads and that horrible "Photos" pgm which has all sorts of downgrades in features, usefulness and new bugs compared to iPhotos which I just finally got used to and was much better software.
I am starting to lose faith in Apple and I am getting that Microsoft "FEEL" like I used to have when I was a PC user, which was why I originally switched to Apple computers in first place.
Oh well got my fingers crossed here.
Thankfully the memory card reader solution is working well, but cost me $45. -
EFI update for the mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro?

I was wondering if Apple enabled the Lion Internet Recovery feature for the Mid-2010 MacBook Pros in the new round of EFI updates released yesterday. I know that they already did this for the 13-inch weeks ago but I wanted to make sure they expanded support for the 15" inch and 17" inch model. My doubt arises from the fact that the EFI update is for the Early 2010 MacBook Pros which would technically be a Summer 2009 model, rather than the actual mid-2010 model which is the one that I have.

Actually, I am contemplating this possibility if Lion keeps annoying me with a bug in Safari where it tires to sandbox the GPU and then, crashes the whole web browser and computer. This iisue keeps happening even with the newest version of Safari v5.1.3 and the last time I encountered this issue occurred in a clean install of Lion v10.7.3 while writing an email on my gmail. Honestly, even though I love Lion and its features; it does not measure up to Snow Leopard's pinnacle of stability and compatibility. Besides the freezing issues I have experienced I also had an issue where my Mac would hang at shutdown and hang with a gray pinwheel (although this issue occurred only if I used the Mac OS X v10.7.0 installer, it has not appeared when installing Lion via the 10.7.2 installer, I am not sure about if the issue resurfaced in the latest installer as I had a hung shutdown when Safari froze and tried to shutdown my Mac, ultimately showing the dreaded gray pinwheel). Let's see what my Mac is up to in the following weeks, so far everything looks Ok and in the multiple visits to the Apple Store I have run hardware diagnostics in my MacBook Pro and all of the gave a clean bill of health to my machine. I can't afford to have the 8th clean install of Lion, therefore the next time Lion fails I will revert to Snow Leopard in a heart beat.

When i connect my ipad2 to iTune, it show "iTunes could not check for an update to the carrier settings for your iPad. An unknown error occured (1651)". What should i do to solve this problem? My iTune version is 10.1.4.10 and my ipad is 4.3.5.

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
thanks for your helpIt means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
Boot to the Recovery HD:

1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
button.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.
